Musical Episodic Modulation of Human Functioning: Anticipation Mechanisms, Personal Sense, and Emotional Recall.

This article develops a theoretical and exploratory account of musical episodic modulation of human functioning, with special attention to emotional recall. It responds to a recurrent limitation in the psychology of music: although music's effects on attention, emotion, memory, motivation, and performance have been widely documented, these domains are often examined separately rather than as mutually organized dimensions of lived episodes. The article proposes that music may function as a modulating agent of human functioning when its temporal, affective, and semantically open structure become…

Assessment of Music Experiences in Navigating Depression (AMEND) through a Tour of the Room assessment model.

A music psychotherapy-based assessment protocol was implemented to guide the treatment of vulnerable participants experiencing depression. Through the AMEND Lab, we created opportunities to support at-risk populations using relationship-centered music therapy. The current study examined whether such therapy delivered over a three-month period could improve well-being, as indexed by self-reported depressive symptoms and resilience. Our sample (n = 72, 50 women, mean age = 38 years, SD = 24 years) included children, teenagers and college students, adults whose neonates were recently in intensive…

Effect of AI-composed music on emotional and physiological states in healthy volunteers: A pilot study.

Music is a promising nonpharmacological intervention for enhancing healthcare outcomes. Emotional regulation is a key mechanism in this process, but results vary, possibly due to differences in music selection. This study explores the impact of AI-composed music on emotional and physiological states, as measured by the self-assessment mannequin (SAM) and heart rate variability (HRV). Healthy volunteers (n = 30) were subjected to 10 min of AI-composed music with the intention of creating positive valence and negative arousal. Before the intervention, questionnaires on personal characteristics a…

Cerebral glucose utilisation during musical emotions: A multimodal functional PET/MRI study.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have demonstrated music-induced activation of the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal across brain networks associated with auditory perception, motor control, and emotion. However, BOLD-fMRI reflects vascular responses that may not fully capture underlying neural activity. Here, we used simultaneous [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) functional positron emission tomography (fPET) and fMRI to examine glucose metabolism closely linked to neural activity, alongside hemodynamic responses during pleasurable music listening. Thirty-five female …

The role of music therapy in palliative and end-of-life care: a narrative review of psychosocial outcomes.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Music therapy has emerged as a valuable component of palliative and end-of-life care, addressing the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Despite growing clinical adoption, the mechanisms and breadth of psychosocial outcomes remain inconsistently synthesized. This narrative review aims to synthesize peer-reviewed evidence on music therapy's psychosocial outcomes in palliative settings, including mechanisms, populations, modalities, and evidence gaps. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed and the University of Al…

[Environmental modulation of musical emotion: frequency-specific analysis based on virtual reality and electroencephalography].

Musical emotion perception, as a key pathway to decoding the essence of human emotions, requires the analysis of its regulatory mechanisms for the development of precise neural modulation strategies. Although electroencephalography (EEG) signals can be used to capture the dynamic neural activities associated with music emotion processing, and virtual reality (VR) technology can offer immersive enhancement effects for emotion regulation, the interaction mechanism among the VR environment, music emotion and neural activity remains unclear. This study established a multimodal experimental paradig…

Using musical pitch interval comparisons to assess cochlear implant frequency-to-place maps.

INTRODUCTION: Music perception remains challenging for many cochlear implant (CI) recipients, due perhaps in part to a frequency mismatch that can occur between the original tonotopic cochlear map and the allocation of frequencies along the electrode array that occurs during programming. Individual differences in ear anatomy, electrode array length, and surgical insertion can lead to great variability in the positions of electrodes within the cochlea, but these differences are not typically accounted for by current CI programming techniques. OBJECTIVES: Flat panel computed tomography (FPCT) c…

Preschool musicality is associated with school-age communication abilities through genes related to rhythmicity.

Early-life abilities involved in perceiving, producing and engaging with music (musicality) may shape later (social) communication and language abilities. Here, we investigate phenotypic and genetic relationships linking musicality and communication abilities by studying information from preschool and school-aged children of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 4169-6737 per measure, age 0.5-17 years). Using structural models, we identified relationships between latent musicality and speech- and cognition-related variables (r > 0.30). Consistently, polygenic scores for rhyt…

Earworms as 'mental habits': Involuntary musical imagery is associated with a wide range of habitual behaviors.

Earworms have been associated with symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), indicating a link to neurocognitive systems involved in the regulation of habitual behavior. The present study investigated whether earworms are associated with a range of habits and compulsions, and with a broader tendency to behave in habitual, routine ways in everyday life. Participants (N = 883) completed an online survey measuring frequency of earworms, other habits and compulsions, everyday habitual tendencies and anxiety. Habitual tendencies in everyday life positively predicted earworm frequency, contro

Study protocol of a randomized control trial on the effectiveness of improvisational music therapy for autistic children.

BACKGROUND: Music therapy is the clinical use of musical interventions to improve mental and physical health across multiple domains, including social communication. Autistic children, who have difficulties in social communication and often increased anxiety, tend to show a strong preference for music, because it can be structured and systematic, and therefore more predictable than social interaction. This makes music therapy a promising medium for therapeutic support and intervention. Previous clinical trials of music therapy compared to traditional therapy for autistic children have shown en…

Music, occupational, physical, and speech therapy interventions for patients in disorders of consciousness: An umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Current clinical guidelines recommend that a multidisciplinary team inclusive of allied healthcare practitioners deliver assessment and intervention for disorders of consciousness. Allied health professionals include music, occupational, physical, and speech therapists. These allied health clinicians are challenged to select interventions due to a lack of evidence-based recommendations regarding rehabilitation interventions that support recovery of consciousness. This umbrella review synthesizes available systematic reviews (SRs) that describe occupational, speech and language, phy…

Exercise-associated Hyponatremia Developing Immediately after a Musical Stage Performance in a Healthy Actress.

Exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) is a life-threatening dilutional hyponatremia that typically occurs during or immediately after exercise in endurance athletes. A 49-year-old actress experienced dizziness 15 min after a 2-h stage performance while drinking several bottles of water. Thirty minutes later, the patient fell unconscious and was hospitalized. On admission, she showed dilutional hyponatremia (117 mmol/L) with extremely elevated arginine vasopressin (11.3 pg/mL). After initial treatment with 3% saline, her sodium levels immediately increased, and she recovered consciousness with

Music-Based Therapy for the Treatment of Perioperative Anxiety and Pain-A Randomized, Prospective Clinical Trial.

Background: Music-based intervention has been advocated as a nonpharmacologic approach for the perioperative control of pain and anxiety in surgical patients. However, its impact on patients with preoperative anxiety has not been clearly established. Our study aimed to examine the impact of music-based intervention administered before, during, and after surgery on postoperative opioid consumption and pain levels, as well as preoperative anxiety, depression, and pain catastrophizing. We hypothesized that, compared to a control group, music-based intervention would be effective in reducing opioi…
