Multiple subluxations and comminuted fracture of the cervical spine in a sheep.

A 5-month-old, 13.5 kg, female Corriedale sheep was referred to the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, with a history of traumatic injury of the cervical spine followed by non-ambulatoric tetraparesis that occurred 2 weeks before being admitted to the hospital. At admission, malalignment of the cervical spine with the cranial part of the neck deviating to the right was noted. Neurological examinations identified the absence of postural reactions in both forelimbs, mildly decreased spinal reflexes, and normal reaction to pain perception tests. Radiography revealed malalignment of the cervic…

Coxiella burnetii infections in sheep or goats: an opinionated review.

Q fever is an almost ubiquitous zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii, which is able to infect several animal species, as well as humans. Cattle, sheep and goats are the primary animal reservoirs. In small ruminants, infections are mostly without clinical symptoms, however, abortions and stillbirths can occur, mainly during late pregnancy. Shedding of C. burnetii occurs in feces, milk and, mostly, in placental membranes and birth fluids. During parturition of infected small ruminants, bacteria from birth products become aerosolized. Transmission to humans mainly happens through inhalation of co…

The nasal cavity of the sheep and its olfactory sensory epithelium.

Macro and microdissection methods, conventional histology and immunohistochemical procedures were used to investigate the nasal cavity and turbinate complex in fetal and adult sheep, with special attention to the ethmoturbinates, the vestibular mucosa, and the septal mucosa posterior to the vomeronasal organ. The ectoturbinates, which are variable in number and size, emerge and develop later than the endoturbinates. The olfactory sensory epithelium is composed of basal cells, neurons, and sustentacular cells organized in strata, but numerous different types are distinguishable on the basis of …

From sheep to mice to cells: tools for the study of the sphingolipidoses.

The sphingolipidoses are a group of inherited lysosomal storage diseases in which sphingolipids accumulate due to the defective activity of one or other enzymes involved in their degradation. For most of the sphingolipidoses, little is known about the molecular mechanisms that lead to disease, which has negatively impacted attempts to develop therapies for these devastating human diseases. Use of both genetically-modified animals, ranging from mice to larger mammals, and of novel cell culture systems, is of utmost importance in delineating the molecular mechanisms that cause pathophysiology, a

Longitudinal prevalence and faecal shedding of Chlamydia pecorum in sheep.

The prevalence and faecal shedding of Chlamydia spp. in sheep in Australia has not been well described. Two species-specific quantitative PCRs (qPCRs) targeting the chlamydial outer membrane protein cell surface antigen gene (ompA) were validated and used to determine the prevalence and faecal shedding of C. abortus and C. pecorum from faecal samples of lambs at three sampling times (weaning, post-weaning and pre-slaughter) from eight farms in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. A total of 3412 faecal samples were collected and screened from approximately 1189 lam…

Monitoring of parasitic cysts in the brains of a flock of sheep in Egypt.

Cerebral parasitic cysts constitute a major problem for livestock. Among these, coenurosis and toxoplasmosis are predominant. Here, a total number of 60 sheep obtained from a private farm in Suez province, Egypt, were examined postmortem to detect visible parasitic cysts, and microscopically to detect small-sized entities. Necropsy revealed bladder-like cysts measuring 0.5-6.5 cm in diameter that were filled with a translucent fluid containing a large number of protoscolices. Accordingly, the cysts were identified as the metacestode Coenurus cerebralis. Among the sheep examined, 11 animals (7 …

A preliminary anatomical study on carotid body of Makouei sheep.

The carotid is a small mass of chemoreceptor's and sustentacular cells that detects changes in the composition of the arterial blood. The aim of the present study was to identify the size, color, location, blood and nerve supply of the carotid body in Makouei sheep. Fourteen heads of sheep from both sexes were collected from Urmia public slaughter-house. The exact situation and nerve supply of the carotid body was determined. Before dissection, blue latex was injected into right and left common carotid arteries. All the branches of the common carotid artery and the branch supplying carotid bod…

Infection status of hydatid cysts in humans and sheep in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan is endemic of cystic echinococcosis (CE). In order to estimate endemicity of CE, we collected data from emergency surgery due to CE in 2002-2010 and also investigated the prevalence of hydatid cysts in the liver and lungs of sheep at an abattoir in Uzbekistan from July 2009 to June 2010. In 14 emergency hospitals, 8,014 patients received surgical removal or drainage of CE during 2002-2010, and 2,966 patients were found in 2010. A total of 22,959 sheep were grossly examined of their liver and lungs, and 479 (2.1%) and 340 (1.5%) of them were positive for the cyst in the liver and lun…

Modulation of lipopolysaccharide-induced chorioamnionitis by Ureaplasma parvum in sheep.

OBJECTIVE: Ureaplasma colonization in the setting of polymicrobial flora is common in women with chorioamnionitis, and is a risk factor for preterm delivery and neonatal morbidity. We hypothesized that Ureaplasma colonization of amniotic fluid would modulate chorioamnionitis induced by Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). STUDY DESIGN: Sheep received intraamniotic (IA) injections of media (control) or live Ureaplasma either 7 or 70 days before delivery. Another group received IA LPS 2 days before delivery. To test for interactions, U parvum-exposed animals were challenged with IA LPS, a…

Yersinia enterocolitica in sheep--a high frequency of biotype 1A.

BACKGROUND: Pigs are regarded as the main reservoir for human pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica, which is dominated by bioserotype 4/O:3. Other animals, including sheep, have occasionally been reported as carriers of pathogenic strains of Y. enterocolitica. To our knowledge, this is the first study performed in the Nordic countries in which the presence of Y. enterocolitica in sheep is investigated. METHODS: Tonsils and faecal samples collected from sheep slaughtered on the island Gotland (Sweden) from September 2010 through January 2011 were analysed for presence of Y. enterocolitica. In an…

Feasibility and safety of transglottic bronchoscopy in mechanically ventilated sheep.

PURPOSE: Although bronchoscopy can be safely performed through endotracheal tube in most intubated critically ill patients, sometimes it could lead to complications such as hypoxia and high airway pressures. Theoretically, transglottic bronchoscopy (TGB) does not interfere with mechanical ventilation and could avoid these complications. In a two-period crossover study, we compared this technique with trans-endotracheal tube bronchoscopy (TEB) in normal anesthetized sheep. METHODS: In five sheep, we did TGB first. The bronchoscope was introduced through the nasal nares and passed into the trac…

[Acute pulmonary embolism: beware of the wolf in sheep's clothing].

Two male patients aged 57 and 73 were referred to the cardiologist because of progressive dyspnoea. In one patient, the general practitioner had previously adopted an expectative policy because of a clean chest X-ray. At presentation after 4 weeks, the patient was diagnosed with and treated for acute coronary syndrome because of minor ECG abnormalities. Additional CT scanning showed a large saddle embolus. Despite adequate treatment, the patient suffered an electrical asystole and died. The other patient underwent ECG, bicycle ergometry, MRI adenosine, echocardiography and lung function tests

A sheep model for endoscopic treatment of mandible subcondylar fractures.

BACKGROUND: Mandible subcondylar fractures may be treated via a traditional visible access incision; however, with the advances in surgical endoscopy surgeons are transitioning to a minimally invasive approach in an effort to reduce surgical morbidity and external facial scarring. We sought to design a clinically applicable teaching tool in a large animal model that would allow the operator to gain experience treating mandible subcondylar fractures via an endoscopic approach. METHODS: A large animal model was developed using the Churra sheep. Subcondylar fractures were created, reduced, and i…

A survey of Mycoplasma agalactiae in dairy sheep farms in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Contagious Agalactia (CA) is one of the major animal health problems in small ruminants because of its economic significance. Currently, four Mycoplasma spp. have been associated with this syndrome: M. agalactiae, M. mycoides subsp. capri, M. capricolum subsp. capricolum and M. putrefaciens. Their presence has been evaluated in several studies conducted in CA-endemic countries. However, previous Spanish studies have been focused on caprine CA, and there is a knowledge gap regarding which Mycoplasma species are present in sheep flocks from Spain, which has the second highest number …

Biomechanical analysis of the intact and destabilized sheep cervical spine.

STUDY DESIGN: An in vitro investigation of the biomechanics of the intact and destabilized sheep cervical spine. OBJECTIVE: To establish the primary and coupled behaviors of the sheep cervical spine, levels C2-C7. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Sheep spine models are often used as a precursor to human cadaveric and clinical trials. Several studies have focused on the sheep anatomy and functional spinal unit biomechanics. However, there has not been a comprehensive study of the multilevel sheep cervical spine. METHODS: Adult sheep cervical spines (C2-C7) were tested in flexion-extension, latera…

Control and eradication of Brucella melitensis infection in sheep and goats.

Brucella melitensis is the main etiological agent of brucellosis in sheep and goats, and is also the main agent responsible for human brucellosis, a predominantly occupational disease related to professions in direct contact with livestock. As there is currently no viable method of preventing human brucellosis to safeguard people attention must be directed toward effectively controlling the disease in sheep and goats. This review focuses on the different strategies in different socioeconomic and epidemiologic situations that can be applied to either control or eradicate brucellosis in sheep an…

Initial observations of cheek tooth abnormalities in sheep in Slovenia.

Observations were made on a small flock of 50 sheep of the native Slovenian Jezersko-Solcava breed by investigators with dental training. The aim was to determine the range of naturally occurring dental diseases, so postmortem examinations were performed on animals slaughtered for meat or culled due to disease. Additional data were obtained by examination of 25 specimens submitted for investigation of unexplained death at a pathology centre. Seventeen (34 per cent) of the flock had incisor disease but only five became clinically ill; all these five had advanced cheek tooth disease (gingival re…
