HCV Microelimination for High-risk Special Populations.

The World Health Organization has set tremendous goals to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030. However, most countries are currently off the track for achieving these goals. Microelimination is a more effective and practical approach that breaks down national elimination targets into goals for smaller and more manageable key populations. These key populations share the characteristics of being highly prevalent for and vulnerable to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Microelimination allows for identifying HCV-infected people and linking them to care more cost-effectively and efficiently. In this

Sensory specializations drive octopus and squid behaviour.

The evolution of new traits enables expansion into new ecological and behavioural niches. Nonetheless, demonstrated connections between divergence in protein structure, function and lineage-specific behaviours remain rare. Here we show that both octopus and squid use cephalopod-specific chemotactile receptors (CRs) to sense their respective marine environments, but structural adaptations in these receptors support the sensation of specific molecules suited to distinct physiological roles. We find that squid express ancient CRs that more closely resemble related nicotinic acetylcholine receptor

Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Special Patient Populations.

Anticoagulants are a cornerstone of treatment in atrial fibrillation. Nowadays, direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are extensively used for this condition in developed countries. However, DOAC treatment may be inappropriate in certain patient populations, such as: patients with chronic kidney disease in whom DOAC concentrations may be dangerously elevated; frail elderly patients with an increased risk of falls; patients with significant drug-drug interactions (DDI) affecting either DOAC concentration or effect; patients at the extremes of body mass in whom an "abnormal" volume of distribution

Panoramic errors in pediatric patients with special needs.

This study aimed to analyze the types and frequencies of panoramic technical errors in pediatric patients with special needs, as compared to matching images of patients with normal developmental patterns. Panoramic images of 100 pediatric patients, with equal numbers of either special needs or healthy controls, referred to our Oral Maxillofacial Imaging unit, were retrospectively examined by four blinded observers for the presence of four common technical errors: palatoglossal air space, movement, positioning errors, and foreign bodies appearance. In addition, they subjectively determined the

International Adoption of Children with Special Needs in Spain.

International adoption has declined in recent years, although the adoption of children with special needs has arisen. We aim to describe our experience in the international adoption of children with special needs and to analyze the concordance between the pathologies included in pre-adoption reports and the diagnosis made upon arrival. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study including internationally adopted children with special needs evaluated at a reference Spanish unit between 2016 and 2019. Epidemiological and clinical variables were collected from medical records, and pre-adoption

Special Considerations in Face Transplantation: A Systematic Review.

Vascularized composite allotransplantation of the face is an exceedingly complex procedure, requiring extensive planning and surgical precision in order to successfully manage patients with facial disfigurements. This review aims to present an overview of the salient anatomic considerations in facial transplantation, as well as give attention to unique patient populations and special considerations.A literature review was performed in search of articles pertaining to considerations in facial transplantation using the databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane. Articles selected for further

Disease-Drug Interactions Requiring Special Attention.

This short review addresses disease-drug interactions requiring special attention, namely interactions between common conditions and over-the-counter medication and interactions between rare conditions and drugs that are absolutely contraindicated. We specifically examine over-the-counter analgesics, antiemetics and drugs used to treat allergy symptoms and underlying disease conditions they can exacerbate. Resources for avoiding disease-drug interactions in patients with rare conditions, such as myasthenia gravis, glucose-6-phosphate deficiency, mitochondriopathies and long QT-syndrome are giv

[Psychiatric care in specially equipped hospital units].

The specially equipped hospital units (UHSA) receive detainees in the region (men, women, minors) requiring full psychiatric hospitalization, either in free care or in care by decision of the State representative. They are located on the site of hospitals, but a penitentiary enclosure allows for the control of the entry and exit of patients, as well as the security of the perimeter. To date, nine UHSAs are in operation in France.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate feeding efficiency and weight gain in infants with cleft palate fed using 1 of the 2 specialty feeders. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Cleft palate clinic in a tertiary pediatric hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Infants with cleft palate (with or without cleft lip) fed using the Medela SpecialNeeds® Feeder (n = 39) or the Dr. Brown's® Specialty Feeding System (n = 16) and who had documented feeding and growth data available from the time of initial assessment in the first month of life and at subsequent follow-up between 2 and 4 months. Special epithelioid trophoblastic tumor: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) is a special type of gestational trophoblastic tumor. However, its pathogenesis has been incompletely elucidated. ETT rarely occurs in the ovaries and fallopian tubes, unlike placental site trophoblastic tumor, requiring a histopathological biopsy and immunohistochemistry for further diagnosis. CASE SUMMARY: A 29-year-old woman with irregular vaginal bleeding and elevated serum chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) levels presented similar symptoms to ectopic pregnancy. Transvaginal ultrasound revealed abnormal echoes of the left adnexa. Postoperativ

Introduction to the Special Issue "The Brain-Gut Axis".

This special Issue presents comprehensive and state-of-the-art advances in supporting the crucial role of the bidirectional interactions between the Brain-Gut Axis in health and diseases with an emphasis on the microbiome-gut-brain axis and its implications in variety of neurological disorders. There are intimate connections between the brain and the digestive system. Gut microbiota dysbiosis activates the intestinal immune system, enhances intestinal permeability and bacterial translocation, leading to neuroinflammation, epigenetic changes, cerebrovascular alterations, amyloid β formation and

Neurodegenerative Diseases and Flavonoids: Special Reference to Kaempferol.

Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Ischemic stroke have become a major health problem worldwide. Pre-clinical studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of flavonoids on neurodegenerative diseases and suggest them to be used as therapeutic agents. Kaempferol is found in many plants such as tea, beans, broccoli, strawberries, and neuroprotective effects against the development of many neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson, Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease. The present study summarizes th
