BACKGROUND: Prior studies show that left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony (LVD), measured by gated SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI), identifies patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) at higher risk for all-cause mortality but these were in small number of patients. The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the relationships between sleep, work practices, speed of processing, and 5-year motor vehicle crash risk among a group of older truck drivers. Anthropometric, demographic, and psychological data were recorded, along with health, sleep, and work histories from a sample of 23 truck drivers. Results from this pilot study suggest that physical fatigue may play a role in processing speed. INTRODUCTION: Little investigation has been conducted to assess the atrial defibrillation thresholds of electrode configurations using electrodes designed for internal ventricular defibrillation (right ventricle [RV], superior vena cava [SVC], and pulse generator housing [Can]) combined with coronary sinus (CS) electrodes. We hypothesized that a CS-->SVC+Can electrode configuration would have a lower atrial defibrillation threshold than a standard configuration for defibrillation, RV-->SVC+Can. OBJECTIVE: To predict whether universal newborn auditory screening will identify most infants with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) caused by congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection.
STUDY DESIGN: A cohort of 388 children born between 1980 and 1996 at one hospital and identified during the newborn period as having congenital CMV infection received repeated hearing evaluations to assess whether hearing loss had occurred.
