Lobster-claw hand: a manifestation of EEC syndrome.

The combination of ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and cleft lip with or without cleft palate (EEC syndrome) is a rare type of congenital anomaly. It usually occurs as an autosomal-dominant trait or less commonly in a sporadic form. In this complex, multiple congenital anomaly syndrome, any of the three cardinal manifestations may present with variable expressions.

Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome: report of a Brazilian family.

We report on a Brazilian family with 11 affected patients through 4 generations presenting the Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome. The main clinical findings in different patients ranged from isolated trichodysplasia (sparse, brittle, and dry hair) to ectodermal dysplasia (1-2-3-4), cleft palate, tear duct anomaly, and minor limb anomalies. Clinical and genetic aspects concerning this condition are discussed.

Familial medullary sponge kidney in association with congenital absence of teeth (anodontia).

Medullary sponge kidney was found in association with congenital absence of teeth (anodontia) in 3 siblings of a single family. Anodontia occurs in the rare familial syndrome of ectodermal dysplasia, but its association with a renal (mesodermal) anomaly is not known. The present report lends further support to a possible hereditary etiology for medullary sponge kidney.

Clouston syndrome: first case in Russia.

Hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia type 2 (HED2) or Clouston syndrome (OMIM #129500) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder which affects skin and its derivatives, characterized by the major triad of features: nail dystrophy, generalized hypotrichosis, and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis. Here we describe the first case of Clouston syndrome in Russia and the molecular genetic analysis of this case.

GAPO syndrome: a report of two siblings and a review of literature.

Growth retardation, alopecia, pseudoanodontia, optic atrophy (GAPO) syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. The molecular nature of the disease is not fully understood and is considered to be one of the ectodermal dysplasia defects. In this report, we describe clinical, histologic, and ultrastructural features in two siblings born to consanguineous parents with a brief review of the literature.

Ellis Van Creveld syndrome.

Ellis Van Creveld syndrome is a rare disorder and is a form of short-limbed dwarfism. It is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by tetrad of disproportionate dwarfism, post-axial polydactyly, ectodermal dysplasia and heart defects. This case report presents a classical case of a seven-year-old boy with Ellis Van Creveld syndrome presented with discrete clinical findings.

Mental retardation, distinct craniofacial dysmorphism, and central nervous system malformation: confirmation of a syndrome.

We present a child with severe mental retardation, a central nervous system malformation, signs of ectodermal dysplasia, and a distinct craniofacial dysmorphism. Similar but less pronounced craniofacial features were present in the mildly mentally retarded mother. This observation confirms a previous report of a boy with the same MCA-MR syndrome and suggests X linked or autosomal dominant inheritance.

Unilateral skin lesions associated with multiple neoplasms.

A girl with unilateral partly depigmented, partly hyperpigmented atrophic skin lesions, hypertrichosis, postauricular nodules, cataracts, and mild mental retardation is presented. Additionally, she developed multiple neoplasms as optic glaucoma, a psammomatous meningioma and an ameloblastoma. It remains unclear whether our patient suffers from a variant of the epidermal nevus syndrome or a new neuro-ectodermal dysplasia.

[A patient with Ito's hypomelanosis, also called incontinentia pigmenti achromians].

A 2 1/2 year old mentally retarded Dutch boy, suffering from epilepsy, hydrocefalus, generalised hypotonia, degenerative signs of the eyes and teeth and characteristic pigment disturbances of the skin is described. The complete picture fits in the syndrome of Ito's hypomelanosis, also called incontinentia pigmenti achromians. This is a neurocutaneous syndrome or an ectodermal dysplasia.

Extensive symmetric truncal aplasia cutis congenita without fetus papyraceus or macroscopic evidence of placental abnormalities.

Aplasia cutis congenita is a rare disorder characterized by localized absence of skin at birth. Type V in Frieden's classification, which is associated with fetus papyraceous or placental infarcts, occurs as a large cutaneous defect on the trunk and extremities. The patient we report had a lesion affecting the trunk and extremities symmetrically, with no family history of the disorder or chromosomal abnormalities. In our opinion, despite the absence of fetus papyraceous or placental infarct, this patient's condition can be classified as type V.

Heritable nail diseases.

Heritable nail diseases are associated with a great variety of inherited diseases and syndromes. Well over 60 HEDs and numerous other inherited nail abnormalities are known to exist. A classification system of these disorders, as well as the specific nail change found in each, has been presented. Table 1 has been included to correlate many of the nail disorders with their corresponding inherited disease or syndrome. Clinically, inherited nail diseases may appear to be of questionable importance. In cases of primary presentation or poor historical background, however, these subtle nail changes
