[Increase in the prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis infection in red foxes in Lower Saxony].

Echinococcus multilocularis is a tapeworm having carnivores as final hosts, the red fox in particular, dog and cat less frequent. Its two host life cycle consists of a larval cycle which predominantly takes place in the liver of rodents such as mice but it can also develop in musk rats as intermediate hosts. Man can also be infected and serves as a wrong intermediate host. He develops an alveolar echinococcosis which usually ends lethal without medical treatment. The prevalence of E. multilocularis among 5.365 red foxes in Lower Saxony was monitored from 1991 to 1997. The data were analysed us

A scoping review of Coxiella burnetii transmission models in ruminants.

Coxiella burnetii is a highly infectious zoonotic bacterium that causes Q fever in humans and coxiellosis in animals. C. burnetii is mainly transmitted from infectious ruminants, particularly during parturition or abortions, to susceptible hosts through the inhalation of contaminated aerosols from the environment. Transmission models have the potential to aid the understanding of transmission dynamics and allow for various control measures to be evaluated. The objective of this PRISMA-ScR guided scoping review was to summarise the key characteristics of C. burnetii transmission models in rumin

Developmental Brain Injury and Social Determinants of Health: Opportunities to Combine Preclinical Models for Mechanistic Insights into Recovery.

Epidemiological studies show that social determinants of health are among the strongest factors associated with developmental outcomes after prenatal and perinatal brain injuries, even when controlling for the severity of the initial injury. Elevated socioeconomic status and a higher level of parental education correlate with improved neurologic function after premature birth. Conversely, children experiencing early life adversity have worse outcomes after developmental brain injuries. Animal models have provided vital insight into mechanisms perturbed by developmental brain injuries, which ha

Toxin models of mitochondrial dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

SIGNIFICANCE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized, in part, by the progressive and selective loss of dopaminergic neuron cell bodies within the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and the associated deficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) in the striatum, which gives rise to the typical motor symptoms of PD. The mechanisms that contribute to the induction and progressive cell death of dopaminergic neurons in PD are multi-faceted and remain incompletely understood. Data from epidemiological studies in humans and molecular studies in genetic, as well

Child mortality estimation: a global overview of infant and child mortality age patterns in light of new empirical data.

BACKGROUND: The under-five mortality rate (the probability of dying between birth and age 5 y, also denoted in the literature as U5MR and (5)q(0)) is a key indicator of child health, but it conceals important information about how this mortality is distributed by age. One important distinction is what amount of the under-five mortality occurs below age 1 y ((1)q(0)) versus at age 1 y and above ((4)q(1)). However, in many country settings, this distinction is often difficult to establish because of various types of data errors. As a result, it is common practice to resort to model age patterns

[A mathematical model of the seasonal morbidity of shigellosis].

A new epidemiologically significant mathematical model for the prognosis of seasonal morbidity in dysentery caused by S. flexneri and S. sonnei has been developed. This model may be used for solving problems on the epidemiology of Shigella infections. In this model quantitative ratios are determined by means of the system of nonlinear integral-differential equations in partial derivatives of the first order with edge conditions of the integral type. This model makes it possible to make multiple calculations with a view to obtaining the most probable picture of the development of the epidemic p

Methodological approaches to structural change: epidemiology and the case for reparations.

Scholars, activists, and policymakers have long called for reparations-a process of repair and restitution for harm and injustices done-to descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States as a structural intervention to address historic and ongoing injustices. However, there has been very limited epidemiologic work examining reparations. We explore some of the epidemiologic benefits and challenges of using causal inference frameworks to model reparations as an example of a large-scale, structural intervention that pushes the limits of what is considered "well-defined" and may violate key

Gonadal sex vs genetic sex in experimental atherosclerosis.

Epidemiological data and interventional studies with hormone replacement therapy suggest that women, at least until menopause, are at decreased cardiovascular risk compared to men. Still the molecular mechanisms beyond this difference are debated and the investigation in experimental models of atherosclerosis has been pivotal to prove that the activation of the estrogen receptor is atheroprotective, despite not enough to explain the differences reported in cardiovascular disease between male and female. This casts also for investigating the importance of the sex chromosome complement (genetic

Sex Differences in Psychosis: Focus on Animal Models.

Most psychiatric illnesses, such as schizophrenia, show profound sex differences in incidence, clinical presentation, course, and outcome. Fortunately, more recently the literature on sex differences and (to a lesser extent) effects of sex steroid hormones is expanding, and in this review we have focused on such studies in psychosis, both from a clinical/epidemiological and preclinical/animal model perspective. We begin by briefly describing the clinical evidence for sex differences in schizophrenia epidemiology, symptomatology, and pathophysiology. We then detail sex differences and sex hormo

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Prenatal Preeclampsia Exposure.

Preeclampsia is a dangerous hypertensive disorder of pregnancy with known links to negative child health outcomes. Here, we review epidemiological and basic neuroscience work from the past several decades linking prenatal preeclampsia to altered neurodevelopment. This work demonstrates increased rates of neuropsychiatric disorders [e.g., increased autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)] in children of preeclamptic pregnancies, as well as increased rates of cognitive impairments [e.g., decreased intelligence quotient (IQ), academic performance] and neurologica

Spatiotemporal modeling of dengue fever risk in Puerto Rico.

Dengue Fever (DF) is a mosquito vector transmitted flavivirus and a reemerging global public health threat. Although several studies have addressed the relation between climatic and environmental factors and the epidemiology of DF, or looked at purely spatial or time series analysis, this article presents a joint spatio-temporal epidemiological analysis. Our approach accounts for both temporal and spatial autocorrelation in DF incidence and the effect of temperatures and precipitation by using a hierarchical Bayesian approach. We fitted several space-time areal models to predict relative risk

Bridging the gap between efficacy trials and model-based impact evaluation for new tuberculosis vaccines.

In Tuberculosis (TB), given the complexity of its transmission dynamics, observations of reduced epidemiological risk associated with preventive interventions can be difficult to translate into mechanistic interpretations. Specifically, in clinical trials of vaccine efficacy, a readout of protection against TB disease can be mapped to multiple dynamical mechanisms, an issue that has been overlooked so far. Here, we describe this limitation and its effect on model-based evaluations of vaccine impact. Furthermore, we propose a methodology to analyze efficacy trials that circumvents it, leveragin

Comparison of data-fitting models for schistosomiasis: a case study in Xingzi, China.

When modelling prevalence data, epidemiological studies usually employ either Gaussian, binomial or Poisson models. However, reasons are seldom given in the literature why the chosen model was felt to be the most appropriate. In this study, we compared all three models for fitting schistosomiasis risk in Xingzi county, Jiangxi province, People's Republic of China. Parasitological data from conventional surveys were available for 36,208 individuals aged between 6 and 65 years from 42 sampled villages and used in combination with environmental data to map the spatial patterns of schistosomiasis

Gender-responsive infectious disease models: Guidelines and systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Sex and gender influence infectious disease outcomes through biological and social mechanisms. Gender norms, roles, and behaviors affect exposure, care-seeking, and service access, yet many infectious disease models overlook these factors. METHODS: To provide guidance to researchers considering sex/gender in epidemiological models, we propose structured guidelines for developing gender-responsive infectious disease models, adapted from an established monitoring and evaluation framework. Recommendations include: 1) using sex/gender-disaggregated or sex/gender-specific populations; …

Causal models of leukaemia and lymphoma.

In this chapter, we apply the molecular epidemiological paradigm of biomarkers of exposure, early effect and susceptibility to causal models of leukaemia and lymphoma. The aim is to enhance the development of biomarkers for use in studying the causes of these haematopoeitic cancers in the general population. Two causal models of acute myeloid leukaemia are discussed in detail: chemotherapy-induced and benzene-induced acute myeloid leukaemia. Specific chromosomal changes found in acute myeloid leukaemia may serve as useful biomarkers of early effect in these models, and genetic variants in glut

[Alternative approaches to the control of schistosomiasis: trying to include subjective elements in epidemiology].

This study discusses the possibility of integrating the "subjective" in epidemiological research. Alternative approaches are presented for programs to provide health and educational services, as well as others which are the right of citizens to receive and the responsibility of the government to provide. The characteristics of participatory research, community-based epidemiology, and popular education programs are described, with the purpose of constructing a model for the control of schistosomiasis using alternative methodologies, including in the model the perceptions and life styles of popu

Factors influencing the transmission of western equine encephalomyelitis virus between its vertebrate maintenance hosts and from them to humans.

A simple model is used to explore the extent to which the uniquely comprehensive studies of western equine encephalomyelitis in Kern County, California, by Reeves and his colleagues over many years, explain the dynamics and epidemiology of the infection. It is concluded that not only does this series of integrated field and laboratory studies successfully account for these phenomena, to an extent which is unlikely to be substantially improved upon, not least because of the inherent difficulties in measuring the key factors with greater precision; but it also provides a unique model of the dedi

Modelling the impact of prior immunity, case misclassification and bias on case-control studies in the investigation of outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis.

Cryptosporidiosis is the most common cause of outbreaks of disease linked to mains water supply in the United Kingdom and the second commonest in the United States. Recent evidence has suggested that prior population immunity may have an impact on the epidemiology of waterborne outbreaks and in particular prior immunity may reduce the power of case-control studies for demonstrating association between disease and water consumption behaviour. However, the degree of impact of prior immunity on the power of epidemiological studies is not yet clear. This paper reports the results of some simple ma

Characterising model dynamics using sparse grid interpolation: Parameter estimation of cholera.

Sparse grid interpolation is a popular numerical discretization technique for the treatment of high dimensional, multivariate problems. We consider the case of using time-series data to calibrate epidemiological models from both phenomenological and mechanistic perspectives using this computational tool. By capturing the dynamics underlying both global and local spaces, our algorithm identifies potentially optimal regions of the parameter space and directs computational effort towards resolving the dynamics and resulting fits of these regions. We demonstrate how sparse grid interpolants can be…
