INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Understanding patients' concerns and goals is essential for providing individualised care in urogynaecology. The study objectives were to undertake a content analysis of free-text concerns and goals recorded by patients using an electronic pelvic-floor questionnaire (ePAQ-PF) and measure how these related to self-reported symptom and health-related quality-of-life (HRQOL) data also recorded using ePAQ-PF.
METHODS: A total of 1996 consenting patients completed ePAQ-PF. Content analysis was undertaken of free-text responses to the item: 'Considering the issues that

BACKGROUND: Global demographic trends suggest that the incidence of both urinary and faecal incontinence will rise in the coming years, bringing significant health and economic implications for both patients and payers. There is limited organisational evidence to guide payers and providers about service configuration which will deliver efficient guideline-compliant, high-quality patient care.
OBJECTIVES: To create, using evidence from a systematic review, qualitative data and expert consensus an internationally applicable service specification for continence care.
METHOD: Evidence was obtain

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to construct a core competency evaluation index system for incontinence specialist nurses; clarify the core competency elements required for incontinence nursing work; and provide a theoretical foundation for a comprehensive, objective and scientific evaluation of incontinence specialist nurses.
DESIGN: A Delphi study design was adopted.
METHODS: Based on the theoretical framework of the Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in China and related literature, a preliminary core competency evaluation index system for continence specialist nurses was determined b

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify common toilet-use and continence containment problems among community-dwelling adults, explore the range of assistive products available for these issues, and map the products identified to the problems they address.
DESIGN: A mapping review methodology was employed, modified to include grey literature, to identify the full range of toilet-use and continence containment assistive products that are designed for use in the home setting.
METHODS: An initial inventory of toilet-use and continence containment problems was derived from toilet-use task sequence

Continence problems remain widespread across community and secondary care, yet provision in the UK continues to be shaped by inequities, fragmented commissioning, stigma and variation in workforce capability. This article examines the contribution of advanced practitioners (APs) to continence care through the four pillars of practice and considers how their clinical expertise, leadership influence, educational role and engagement with research can strengthen assessment, co-ordination and person-centred support. Evidence from national reports and existing studies demonstrates the need for impro

AIM: To compare the isolated and identified bacterial species colonizing on the genital skin between patients with and without incontinence-associated dermatitis.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 102 patients with stroke admitted to an acute hospital in Japan. Swabs were collected, and bacterial species found in swabs were isolated and identified using a selective agar medium and simple identification kits. In addition to demographic information, severity of incontinence-associated dermatitis and the total bacterial counts were measured.
RESULTS: Incontinence-associated dermatiti

The surgical therapy of pelvic floor insufficiency is mainly focused on two functional disorders, outlet obstruction and fecal incontinence. Surgery becomes of special significance after ineffectiveness of conservative treatment options. The indications for surgical interventions should be based on a precise preoperative evaluation. The dimension of functional impairment will be primarily assessed by an accurate anamnesis, application of disease-specific scoring systems and the clinical proctological basic examination that includes digital rectal examination and proctoscopy/rectoscopy. Imaging…

Fistulotomy is inappropriate for patients with a high transsphincteric fistula, passing through the upper or middle third of the external anal sphincter, because this procedure requires division of a large part of the anal sphincter, with subsequent risk of fecal incontinence. Therefore, sphincter preserving procedures have been developed for the treatment of high transsphincteric fistulas, such as flap repair. In most hospitals, fistulotomy is still the treatment of choice for low transsphincteric fistula, passing through the lower third of the external anal sphincter. Although this procedure…

INTRODUCTION: Different trials have investigated the role of conventional anal manometry in the diagnosis of pelvic floor disorders. The aim of the present study is to define the role and the effectiveness of vector anal manometry and vector asymmetry index scoring in the assessment of pelvic floor disorders i.e. fecal incontinence and obstructed defecation.
METHODS: Between 2005 and 2007, 387 patients underwent clinical and manometric evaluation in the Department of Surgery, University Hospital Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy, and were included in the present prospective cohort study. All the patie…

BACKGROUND: Several pelvic area cancers exhibit high incidence rates, and their surgical treatment can result in adverse effects such as urinary and fecal incontinence, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Post-surgery incontinence is a significant concern, with prevalence rates ranging from 25 to 45% for urinary incontinence and 9-68% for fecal incontinence. Cancer survivors are increasingly turning to YouTube as a platform to connect with others, yet caution is warranted as misinformation is prevalent.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the information quality in YouTube v…

Despite surgical intervention, patients … s At a median follow-up of 106 months, functional outcomes showed high rates of constipation (87%), fecal incontinence (54%), and fecal soiling (87%). Fecal incontinence was more prevalent in patients with bulbar rectourethral and recto-vesical fistulas. Postoperative complications occurred in 72% of patients, primarily in those with high ARMs, and correlated with i …
