Hb Dhofar is a variant haemoglobin (beta(29 (GGC-GGT) gly-gly), beta(58 (CCT-CGT) pro-arg)) associated with a thalassaemic phenotype and unique to the Sultanate of Oman. We report clinical and haematological data on 54 subjects with Hb Dhofar (37 heterozygotes, 14 homozygotes and three compound heterozygotes with a different beta-thalassaemia mutation). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Diagnosis of active tuberculosis in 2.6% from 2123 hemoblastosis patients admitted to Hematological Research Center in 1990-1999 shows that such patients can be referred to high risk group in relation to tuberculosis infection. Cebus albifrons were fed folate-deficient diets in order to assess folate status at the cellular level with the deoxyuridine suppression test. Plasma and red blood cell folates were significantly lower at 2 months, compared to control values.
