SARS-CoV-2 infection risk by non-healthcare occupations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, several industries were deemed essential. However, information on infection risk in occupational settings outside of healthcare workers and medical staff (HCWs) remain scarce. Thus, a systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to compile the risk of infection to SARS-CoV-2 in non-healthcare workers (non-HCWs). METHODS: We screened three databases (EMBASE, PubMed, medRχiv) for studies on SARS-CoV-2 infection risk in working population. Several stages of severity (infection, hospitalisation, admission to intensive care unit (ICU), mortality) wer

Developing and Implementing an Occupation-Based Practice Service Delivery Model for Stroke Survivors in a Rural Thai Community Rehabilitation Center: Mixed Methods Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Occupation-based practice (OBP) has been demonstrated to enhance occupational performance and goal attainment in stroke rehabilitation. However, existing evidence is predominantly derived from hospital-based settings, with limited investigations into OBP implementation in community contexts. In Thailand, particularly in rural areas, there remains a need to establish effective OBP service delivery models and to evaluate their outcomes across diverse client populations receiving community-based rehabilitation services. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop an OBP service delivery m

Inequalities in Alcohol-Related Mortality in 17 European Countries: A Retrospective Analysis of Mortality Registers.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic inequalities in alcohol-related mortality have been documented in several European countries, but it is unknown wh … onal class) were calculated. Rates of alcohol-related mortality are higher in lower educational and occupational groups in all countries. Both relative and absolute inequalities are largest in Eastern Europe, and Finland and Denmark also have very large absolute inequalities in alcohol-related mortality. For example, for educational inequality among Finnish men, the …

When self-control is no longer a protective factor: the moderating effect of institutionalized identity on attitudes toward artificial intelligence.

As artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly applied in high-risk industries, understanding the attitudes of different occupational groups toward AI and their underlying psychological correlates has become an important research issue. Existing studies typically conceptualize self-control as a psychological trait with universal adaptive value, suggesting that it helps buffer "individuals" negative attitudes toward new technologies; however, this assumption is primarily based on samples from the general population. Drawing on a situated perspective of psychological functioning, the present cr…

Occupational stress, psychological resources, coping responses, and job satisfaction among healthcare workers in Ho Chi Minh City: a three-wave prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) in Vietnam face compounding occupational stressors placing them at elevated risk for diminished job satisfaction, depression, and anxiety. Longitudinal within-person evidence linking occupational stress to job satisfaction remains sparse in Southeast Asian low- and middle-income countries such as Vietnam. METHODS: A three-wave prospective cohort study enrolled 1,500 healthcare workers (HCWs; physicians, nurses, pharmacists, technicians) from 15 healthcare facilities in Ho Chi Minh City (T1: January-March 2023; T2: July-September 2023; T3: January-March 20

Metabolic changes in human plasma samples among workers exposed to diisocyanate products.

INTRODUCTION: In the European Union (EU), the total use of diisocyanates is 2.5 million tons per year. Diisocyanates are highly reactive chemicals, containing two isocyanate functional groups. Diisocyanates are the main cause of occupational asthma in EU. The aim of this study was to assess metabolic changes in human plasma after occupational exposure to diisocyanates. METHODS: This study used samples and data provided by the EU project HBM4EU. The study population was recruited from Finland and Belgium, including 81 diisocyanate exposed workers and 40 controls. Non-targeted metabolomics was

Psychosocial and Occupational Factors Associated With Low Back Pain Among Healthcare Professionals: A Systematic Review.

Low back pain (LBP) is a highly prevalent condition among healthcare providers (HCPs) worldwide. The physical demands of their jobs predispose them to risk of LBP and other musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). LBP is multifactorial and is thus influenced by psychosocial and occupational risk factors. LBP affects the health and productivity of HCPs and needs to be addressed. This review investigated the psychosocial and occupational factors associated with LBP among HCPs. This research adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Key medical research

An occupational therapy delirium pathway reduces hospital re-presentations in older adults with delirium: A before and after observational study.

INTRODUCTION: The hospital environment can exacerbate symptoms of delirium; as such there is a move to promote early supported discharge for patients with delirium. However, the occupational therapy role and impact of intervention is not well known. Our study evaluated an occupational therapy delirium pathway facilitating early assessment, intervention and supported discharge to home compared with hospital-based care. METHOD: A before and after, observational study design. Data was collected regarding hospital use, patient function (Functional Independence Measure/Functional Assessment Measur

Risk Factors Involved in the High Incidence of Bladder Cancer in an Industrialized Area in North-Eastern Spain: A Case-Control Study.

Bladder cancer (BC) is the most common of the malignancies affecting the urinary tract. Smoking and exposure to occupational and environmental carcinogens are responsible for most cases. Vallès Occidental is a highly industrialized area in north-eastern Spain with one of the highest incidences of BC in men. We carried out a case-control study in order to identify the specific risk factors involved in this area. Three hundred and six participants were included (153 cases BC and 153 controls matched for age and sex): in each group, 89.5% (n = 137) were male and the mean age was 71 years (range 3

Seroepidemiology of hepatitis A antibodies among children's hospital staff.

BACKGROUND: With improved socioeconomic conditions, adults are more frequently seronegative for hepatitis A virus (HAV) and therefore susceptible to infection. A safe and efficacious active HAV vaccine has been developed and licensed. The general recommendation is to vaccinate populations at increased occupational exposure to HAV. AIM: To determine the seroprevalence of HAV antibodies among children's hospital employees and to correlate seropositivity with demographic and occupational variables as a basis for formulating vaccine recommendations. METHODS: The staff of a tertiary pediatric med

Calcitropic hormones and occupational lead exposure.

The authors sought to clarify in a cross-sectional study the possible associations between homeostatic regulators of calcium and occupational exposure to lead. Subjects were 146 industrial male employees, 56 with and 90 without occupational lead exposure. The main outcome measures were serum concentration of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). The median values of blood lead were 40.5 microg/dl in the exposed group and 4.0 microg/dl in the controls. There were no differences between groups in dietary history and serum calcium levels. PTH and calcitriol levels we

The nature and impact of stigma towards injured workers.

INTRODUCTION: Many injured workers experience high levels of stigma and discrimination, which compound their physical injuries and cause social and psychological harm. Despite a growing awareness of the prevalence of such stigma, there is little research that focuses on the sources, nature and consequences of stigma with respect to the lives of injured workers. The purpose of this paper is to advance knowledge related to stigma towards injured workers, specifically to explain the nature and processes of stigma and their influence on injured workers' lives. METHODS: Using a constructivist grou
