Gallium SPECT/CT in evaluation of IgG4-related disease: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The clinical picture of IgG4-related sclerosing disease (IgG4-RSD) may mimic lymphoma, and should be in the differential diagnosis of patients with this clinical picture. CASE SUMMARY: A 32-year-old female had recurrent swelling of both eyelids for more than 15 years. Examination revealed elastic, firm, swollen lacrimal glands about 2-3 cm in diameter that was not painful. Head and orbits magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed mass lesions over the bilateral lacrimal glands, submandibular glands, and left foramen of ovale. The differential diagnosis included lymphoid tissue, infl

Constitutional FLCN mutations in patients with suspected Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome ascertained for non-cutaneous manifestations.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) is characterized by a clinical triad including cutaneous hamartomas originating from hair follicles, lung cysts/pneumothorax, and kidney tumors. Inactivating mutations of the tumor suppressor gene FLCN are identified in most families with BHDS. Usually, patients are referred for genetic examination by dermatologists because of the presence of typical multiple skin tumors with or without additional symptoms. However, because of phenotypic variability and incomplete penetrance, the clinical presentation of BHDS is not yet fully defined. Criteria for genetic testing

Skin injury and great auricular nerve sacrifice after parotidectomy.

BACKGROUND: The great auricular nerve (GAN) is often sacrificed during parotidectomy, and one of the most important side effect is anesthesia of the region innervated by the nerve itself. The GAN across the sternocleidomastoid muscle toward the parotid gland divides into anterior and posterior branches. Little importance is given to the GAN sacrifice sequela, and it is considered a small price to pay for the removal of the main disease. METHODS: The medical records of all patients who underwent parotid gland surgery from 1993 to 2007 in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery of an academic t

Navigating Idiopathic Masseter Muscle Hypertrophy in a 14-Year-Old Female Child: A Report of a Unique Case.

This case report documents the clinical journey of a 14-year-old female child experiencing bilateral swelling and pain in the mandibular region, suggestive of idiopathic masseter muscle hypertrophy. This condition, although relatively uncommon, can present itself either unilaterally or bilaterally. While cosmetic concerns, often denoted as a "square face," are commonly expressed by patients, additional symptoms like protrusion, bruxism, or trismus may also be present. The patient reported a gradual and asymptomatic bilateral bulging in the mandible angle region, with an explicit complaint of p

Acinic cell carcinoma of the oral and maxillofacial region: an international multicenter study.

The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence, clinicopathological, and prognostic features of acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC) of the oral and maxillofacial region. AciCC cases were retrospectively retrieved from 11 pathology centers of three different countries. Medical records were examined to extract demographic, clinical, pathologic, and follow-up information. A total of 75 cases were included. Females (65.33%) with a mean age of 45.51 years were mostly affected. The lesions usually presented as an asymptomatic (64.28%) nodule (95.66%) in the parotid gland (70.68%). The association of

Homeobox protein, Hmx3, in postnatally developing rat submandibular glands.

Homeobox-containing (Hox) genes play important roles in development, particularly in the development of neurons and sensory organs, and in specification of body plan. The Hmx gene family is a new class of homeobox-containing genes defined by a conserved homeobox region and a characteristic pattern of expression in the central nervous system that is more rostral than that of the Hox genes. To date, three closely related members of the Hmx family, Hmx1, Hmx2, and Hmx3, have been described. All three Hmx genes are expressed in the craniofacial region of developing embryos. Here we show, for the f

Does Leishmaniasis disease alter the parenchyma and protein expression in salivary glands?

Leishmaniasis is considered a serious public health problem in several regions in Brazil and worldwide. This research aimed to perform a histopathological and proteomic study of parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands of BALB/c mice infected by Leishmania (L) infantum chagasi using histological, immunohistochemical and epifluorescence techniques. Twelve isogenic BALB/c male mice, around six- to eight-weeks old, were separated into two groups: the animals of the control group were injected with 0.15 ml of NaCl, while those in the experimental group were inoculated with 5 × 10(6) amastigote

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the parotid gland. Its clinical behavior is determined by the relative ratio of mucous and epidermoid cells with pathologic high-grade tumors containing a greater proportion of epidermoid cells. Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rarely reported variant with unclear long-term clinical behavior. A 23-year-old female was found to have a deep lobe parotid mass on imaging studies. Preoperative evaluation was non-diagnostic. Intraoperatively, the tumor was found to be adherent to the lower division of the facial nerve and portions

Neuroendocrine carcinomas of the head and neck: A small case series.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine tumors of the head and neck are rare and arise either from epithelial or neuronal origin. Debate continues over the classification systems and appropriate management of these pathologies. OBJECTIVE: By investigating a small set of cases of high grade epithelial-derived neuroendocrine tumors of the head and neck (neuroendocrine carcinomas or NEC) from one institution, we compare survival rates of NEC of the head and neck to pulmonary NEC. METHODS: We identified patients from pathology records with neuroendocrine carcinomas of the head and neck and retrospectively

Primary sebaceous carcinoma of the lacrimal gland.

Primary sebaceous carcinoma is an exceptionally rare tumor of the lacrimal gland and less than 10 cases have been so far published in the literature. Two adult patients aged 38 and 81 years, respectively, who suffered unilateral painful massive swelling of the lacrimal gland are described. The disease in the first patient initially manifested as ipsilateral parotid gland metastasis and the primary tumor could be detected 3 months later. Both tumors were rock hard and fixed on palpation, caused partial upper eyelid ptosis, displaced the globe anteromedially and impaired ocular motility. Magneti

Cation excretion and kallikrein secretion by the rat parotid gland in various hypertensive models.

The major salivary glands are distinguished by a high kallikrein content, localized particularly in regions with intense electrolyte transport (the apical border of striated duct cells and the luminal border of the main excretory ducts). For this reason we used the parotid gland as a test model for investigations on electrolyte (sodium and potassium) and kallikrein transport in various forms of experimental hypertension [spontaneously hypertensive rats, renovascular (two-kidney one-clip) hypertension, and deoxycorticosterone trimethylacetate (DOCA)-salt hypertension]. As compared with values f

Intensity modulated radiation therapy for oropharyngeal and oral cavity tumors: clinical use and experience.

Background and purpose. Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) offers an opportunity to generate dose distributions highly conformal to the target volume. Head and neck cancer patients, referred for radiotherapy, may be good candidates to benefit from IMRT. This paper discusses the clinical implementation of IMRT for oropharyngeal and oral cavity tumors, and reports the clinical results of the 14 patients treated with this technique at Ghent University Hospital (GUH). Patients and Methods. Between May 1999 and May 2001, 14 patients were treated with IMRT at GUH for oropharyngeal or oral

Perfusion analysis of benign parotid gland tumors by contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS).

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of parotid gland tumors is sometimes challenging due to their diversity and pleomorphic histological appearance. B-scan sonography along with color-coded duplex sonography is the gold standard in the diagnostic workup of these lesions, whereas histopathology is to date the gold standard for the final diagnosis. To date no single imaging technique provides the chance for an art-diagnosis with highly diagnostic accuracy. Contrast enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) on the other hand provides information of the perfusion down to the capillary level. Currently there are only a fe

U-SMAS: ultrasound findings of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system.

The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) is a complex fibrous network connecting facial muscles to the dermis, with varying morphological characteristics across different facial regions. Recent studies have identified five distinct types of SMAS morphology, highlighting the need for region-specific interventions in facial rejuvenation. This pictorial essay explores ultrasound imaging of the SMAS using ultra-high frequency (24-33 MHz) probes, known as U-SMAS. Analysis of 186 full-face U-SMAS scans revealed consistent patterns in the facial and neck layers, with regional variations align

Drainage Pattern of Craniofacial Veins With Emphasis on its Influence on Facial Reconstruction Procedures.

As the facial transplantation procedures are becoming more popular and frequent in recent years, for repairing facial trauma, variations in the veins of head and neck needs to be reported time and again. This study was undertaken to examine the course and drainage pattern of the facial vein and external jugular vein on this context and emphasize its surgical implications. The authors studied the head and neck region of 50 embalmed cadavers of both sexes to document normal and variant anatomy of facial, retromandibular, and external jugular veins. In 30% of the head and neck regions, different
