The authors studied the stereotyped movements presented by a group of 20 autistic children, evaluating the patient observation protocols according to a psychodynamic model of autism. The stereotyped movements were analysed considering ten different parameters: type, site, morphology, frequency, association, complexity, active sensory channel, trigger event, affect during stereotyped movement, and function. The results indicate that each autistic child possesses highly idiosyncratic "stereotypical behavioural equipment", which includes behaviours ranging from simple, reflex-like actions, to muc

Neurogenic, particularly autonomic disorders, frequently contribute to the etiology and pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction. Parasympathetic and sympathetic outflow mediates erection. Noncholinergic, nonadrenergic neurotransmitters induce activation of cyclic monophosphates, leading to relaxation of smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa and by this to tumescence and rigidity, i.e. erection. The diagnosis of neurologic causes of erectile dysfunction requires a detailed history and neurologic examination. Conventional neurophysiological procedures evaluate the function of rapidly conductin

BACKGROUND: Kallmann's syndrome (KS) was first mentioned in 1944 as an association of anosmia and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Causes are multiple genetic defects the most common of which is the x-linked KS appearing mostly in men. However, autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive forms have also been described.
PATIENT: We present a case of KS with normosmia (male, 39 years of age). All symptoms of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism were present.
RESULTS: Psychophysical olfactory testing revealed left-sided anosmia with right-sided normosmia which was confirmed by electrophysiological measur

This chapter reviews the current literature on the possible role of olfactory and trigeminal chemosensory function in idiopathic environmental intolerances (IEI). Two general points emerge from the review. First, studies of chemosensory function in IEI patients indicate that, despite their self-reported "heightened sensitivity" and enhanced responsivity to environmental odors, when compared to healthy controls they generally are found to be equally or even less sensitive to odors as measured by objective psychophysical and electrophysiological measures of olfactory function. These studies poin

We recorded whole-scalp magnetoencephalographic (MEG) responses to black-and-white checkerboards to study whether the human cortical responses are quantitatively similar to stimulation of the lower and upper visual field at small, 0-6 degrees, eccentricities. All stimuli evoked strong occipital responses peaking at 50-100 ms (mean 75 ms). The activation was modeled with a single equivalent current dipole in the contralateral occipital cortex, close to the calcarine fissure, agreeing with an activation of the V1/V2 cortex. The dipole was, on average, twice as strong to lower than to upper field

Four cases of central pontine haemorrhage are described in which auditory dysfunction was documented. Two cases had a hearing loss, in one of which there was recovery of the low frequencies. This case provides support for the tonotopic organization of the auditory pathways in the caudal pontine area, with the lowest frequencies being encoded medially. In all cases, there were abnormalities of the auditory brainstem responses, wave V being consistently involved, while wave III was abnormal in only one patient. In three cases, the masking level differences and crossed acoustic reflex thresholds

During the last five years there were 12,556 traffic accidents; there were injured persons in 2753 accidents which makes 21.9% (225 killed, 598 seriously and 210 lightly injured). Among the killed victims motor vehicle drivers are dominant, among the seriously injured are pedestrians and travellers are dominant in the group of lightly injured. In these accidents 404 children were injured, mostly 8-11 years of age. In most cases causes of death are polytrauma and craniocerebral injuries. The most frequent causes of traffic accidents resulting injured persons are: traffic regulations not being r

A family is described in which an 8 base pair deletion (nucleotides 5252-5259, codons 341-343) of the rhodopsin gene cosegregates with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP). The deletion results in a shift in the reading frame, causing a rhodopsin molecule extended by one residue and substantially altered at the carboxyl terminus. Phenotypic expression is relatively mild. In affected members, night blindness did not occur before the age of 16, and late onset of visual field loss was consistently reported. Even older individuals (59 and 76 years) had preserved central islands in the vi

Patients with head injuries frequently complain of a decreased ability to endure intense light and sound stimuli. The few psychophysical studies that have objectively studied this type of hyperaesthesia have not assessed to what extent patients recover from this hyperaesthesia after mild head injury (MHI). A computerised rating technique was used to assess tolerance to intense sound (95 dB) and light (1500 lux) stimuli in patients with an uncomplicated MHI. Patients were tested 10 days and five weeks after the injury. Although most patients substantially recovered from both visual and acoustic

Glaucomatous changes have been known to occur in the inner retinal layer all over the fundus and in the deep retinal layer and retinal pigment epithelium close at the optic disc border. This study was conducted to address the question as to whether the middle retinal layers are altered by the glaucomatous process. The study included histological slides of 23 eyes enucleated due to painful secondary traumatic angle-closure glaucoma and 14 nonglaucomatous eyes removed because of a malignant choroidal melanoma. We evaluated the cell count and thickness of the inner nuclear layer via histomorphome

The authors report a family in which a Thr58Arg rhodopsin mutation co-segregates with the disease phenotype of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in 16 family members. DNA sequence determination confirms the presence of the same mutation reported previously for one family apparently unrelated to the pedigree now reported. Features of RP in this family included a later onset of symptoms, with night blindness first noticed between ages 12 to 24 years. Although symptoms worsened with age, no complete blindness was observed even with advanced age. Results of psychophysical and electrophy

Optic nerve damage is associated with impairment of psychophysical functions. We measured dark adaptation in 21 eyes of 14 normal subjects, 35 eyes of 19 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, and 7 eyes of 4 patients with nonglaucomatous descending optic nerve atrophy. In the normal subjects light thresholds and time of the shoulder in the dark adaptation curve increased significantly with age. In eyes with glaucomatous or nonglaucomatous optic nerve damage light sensitivity was lower than in normal eyes of age-matched control groups. Rod light sensitivity was significantly (P less than 0

At comparison of the data obtained in psychophysical and electrophysiological studies, disturbances were revealed of neurophysiological mechanisms of visual perception in children with the diseases of retinocortical tract. For compensation of the disturbances and development of perception a method is suggested of specific activation of neuronal formations based on their fundamental property--plasticity. The method consists in using rhythmical repeated stimulation of eyes with images which widely vary by the brightness, contrast, colour, form, orientation and spatial position in the visual fiel

Five patients suffering post-traumatic anosmia were studied at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver. Each patient underwent psychophysical testing, clinical evaluation, and olfactory biopsy. The biopsy specimens were examined ultrastructurally and were found to vary from normal tissues. The overall appearance of the olfactory epithelium in the post-traumatic patient is disrupted and the receptor cells are distorted. Large numbers of axons are located near the basement membrane and can often be found in bundles throughout the epithelium, extending even to the mucosal surfac

Discrimination tests were conducted for each ear of 6 patients with unilateral Menière's disease. Differential sensitivity to changes in pure-tone frequency (presumably containing temporal and place cues) was compared to differential sensitivity to changes in rate of sinusoidally amplitude-modulated noise (presumably containing only a temporal cue) at common low frequencies and modulation rates (less than 400 Hz). An adaptive forced-choice psychophysical procedure was used. The better-ear results for the Menière patients generally were similar to findings for normally hearing listeners. For th

A comparative study of acuity tests and pattern evoked potential (EP) criteria was performed on a total of 307 subjects, 214 of them at an age between 2 months post-term and 12 years. All were examined ophthalmologically prior to testing. It was shown that both psychophysical and EP estimated acuity improve in the same way until puberty. From birth to about 6 months a rapid improvement is found. This fast phase can probably be attributed to retinal morphological maturation. During this period a fair estimate of acuity can be obtained by determining the checksize that yields the largest EP; a c

UNLABELLED: Artists and photographers use diagonals to convey dynamism, tension and instability in naturalistic and abstract images. However, the oblique effect in visual perception refers to a reduced sensitivity to oblique compared to cardinal (vertical/horizontal) orientations, linked to anisotropy in the distribution of preferred orientations of primary visual cortex neurons, which reflect the statistical distribution of edge orientations in natural images. Distal diagonals generically project onto oblique orientations on the retina, creating a conundrum between their perceptual salience i

Preclinical investigations have suggested that altered functioning of brainstem pain-modulation circuits may be crucial for the maintenance of some chronic pain conditions. While some human psychophysical studies show that patients with chronic pain display altered pain-modulation efficacy, it remains unknown whether brainstem pain-modulation circuits are altered in individuals with chronic pain. The aim of the present investigation was to determine whether, in humans, chronic pain following nerve injury is associated with altered ongoing functioning of the brainstem descending modulation syst

The retinal area inspecting a visual stimulus and, consequently, the number of photoreceptors engaged in a visual task increase with presentation time, as fixational eye movements continuously move the retina across the retinal image. Here, we varied stimulus duration in a Tumbling-E visual acuity task while recording videos of the photoreceptor mosaic in seven participants with adaptive optics micro-psychophysical techniques to determine how far the retinal image must move across the cone mosaic before this motion begins to improve visual acuity. Five stimulus presentation durations were test

Blur occurs naturally when the eye is focused at one distance and an object is presented at another distance. Computer-graphics engineers and vision scientists often wish to create display images that reproduce such depth-dependent blur, but their methods are incorrect for that purpose. They take into account the scene geometry, pupil size, and focal distances, but do not properly take into account the optical aberrations of the human eye. We developed a method that, by incorporating the viewer's optics, yields displayed images that produce retinal images close to the ones that occur in natura
