Living at risk: the sibling's perspective of early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) is an increasingly diagnosed condition and is associated with genetic risk factors. This is one of the first studies exploring the lived experience of siblings of individuals with EOAD. We used structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to assess a broad range of siblings' experiences with and beliefs about EOAD, including knowledge, perceptions of personal risk, level of worry, and effects on life decisions. Participants (n = 24) were predominantly female (62.5%) and middle-aged (mean = 56.8 years; range 37-83). When asked about risk factor…

Prevalence of amblyogenic risk factors in siblings of patients with accommodative esotropia.

PURPOSE: To prospectively describe the prevalence of amblyogenic risk factors in the siblings of patients with accommodative esotropia. METHODS: We examined 81 proband children with accommodative esotropia and 115 siblings ages 10 years or younger in our clinical practice. Criteria for significant ocular findings in siblings included any of the following: spherical refractive error > or = +3.5 D in either eye; astigmatism in either eye > or =1.0 D or 1.5 D depending on the axis; anisometropia > or =1.5 D; and/or any strabismus. RESULTS: In siblings, 42.6% (95% CI: 34.0%-51.7%) had significan…

Mortality rates in subjects with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and their siblings.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to estimate the mortality rate in subjects with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and their siblings whose FASD status was unknown. METHODS: We used the state FASD Registry to link subjects with FASD to a North Dakota birth certificate. We were able to link 304 of 486 cases (63%). We used the birth certificates to identify the mother and children born to the mother (siblings). We then searched for death certificates for both the FASD cases and their siblings. We then calculated the annual and age-adjusted mortality rates for the siblings of the Registry cas…

Lipoid proteinosis. A report of 2 siblings and a brief review of the literature.

Lipoid proteinosis is a rare autosomal recessive inherited metabolic disorder characterized by deposition of a hyaline-like material in the skin, oral laryngeal mucosa, and in other sites. In this report, the author describes 2 Saudi siblings who had characteristic skin findings, oral and mucosal lesions, histological findings along with few rarely encountered manifestations including pathognomonic calcifications in the hippocampus, electroencephalogram findings and briefly reviews the literature. These cases are presented to emphasize the occurrence of this condition in Saudi Arabia, and to u…

Depression, anxiety, and quality of life in siblings of children with intractable epilepsy.

Thirty-seven siblings (aged 6-18) of children with intractable epilepsy were surveyed regarding their anxiety, depression, and quality of life, by both self-report (Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale, RCMAS; Children's Depression Inventory, CDI; and Peds QL) and parental report (Child Behavior Checklist, CBCL). Completed forms were returned by 37 of 58 (64%) eligible families. No sibling had a score in the clinical range on the CDI, and only 2 of 37 (6%) scored in the clinical range on the RCMAS, a proportion similar to the normative population. In contrast, 25% were rated by their pare…

Patients with eating disorders and their siblings. An investigation of body image perceptions.

Little is known about body images of siblings of patients with eating disorders. In this study we investigated body images of patients with anorexia or bulimia nervosa and of the patients' brothers and sisters. A computer program was employed that allows modeling perceived and desired body images of patients and family members. Patients, siblings and male and female control subjects rated their body images. The selected images were compared with anthropometric data. All subjects also filled out a body image questionnaire. Data from 30 patients, 38 siblings, and 60 control subjects are presente…

Isolated gastroschisis in successive siblings: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Although gastroschisis occurring in siblings is rare, a number of cases have been reported. A variety of inheritance patterns and embryologic explanations have previously been suggested. Young maternal age appears to be a consistent risk factor. CASE: At age 17 years, Melanie (pseudonym) presented at 36 weeks' gestation and delivered a boy affected by gastroschisis. This condition had not been noted at a 13-week prenatal ultrasound. At age 18 years, Melanie delivered a second son with gastroschisis. There was no history of gastroschisis or other congenital anomaly in either parent…

[Linear Darier disease in two siblings. An example of loss of heterozygosity].

BACKGROUND: Darier's disease or keratosis follicularis is an autosomal dominant acantholytic disorder that frequently arises as a result of spontaneous mutation. It is either a generalized or localized condition due to a mutation in the SERCA2 12q23-q24,1 resulting in a faulty organization of the tonofilaments. We present two siblings affected with the linear form of this disorder and discuss these cases as an example of the genetic mechanism of loss of heterozygosity. CASE REPORTS: A 7 year-old girl was referred for evaluation of linear lesions present since the first year of age. Examinatio…

Kawasaki disease associated with chickenpox: report of two sibling cases.

Kawasaki disease is a group of acute febrile illnesses of young children. Infectious etiology for Kawasaki disease has been long postulated, although no single causing agent has been identified consistently by conventional methods. This report described two sisters, soon after a primary infection by varicella-zoster virus, manifesting fever and muco-cutaneous lesions compatible with the feature of Kawasaki disease consecutively. Mild dilatation of the coronary artery was revealed in both by echocardiography. Both of them received intravenous gamma-globulin therapy and the follow-up echocardiog

Behavioural problems in children and adolescents with spinal muscular atrophy and their siblings.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a chronic illness characterized by loss of motor function. The aim of the study was to investigate behavioural adjustment in 96 children and adolescents with SMA (47 males, 49 females; mean age 11 years 2 months, range 6 to 18 years). Forty-five non-affected siblings (26 males, 19 females; mean age 11 years 6 months, range 6 to 18 years) and 59 normally developing children (33 males, 26 females; mean age 10 years 8 months, range 6 to 18 years) were recruited as control participants. Behavioural symptoms were measured with the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) an…

Intradural vasculitis and hemorrhage in full sibling Welsh springer spaniels.

Two, full sibling, Welsh springer spaniel presented at 8 and 18 mo of age with rapidly progressive ataxia, recumbency, and pyrexia. The spinal cord contained extensive subdural hemorrhage and, in 1 dog, suppurative and necrotizing arteritis in the dura. The findings suggest a familial form of canine juvenile polyarteritis syndrome.

Former poliomyelitis as a health and socioeconomic factor. A paired sibling study.

Eighty former poliomyelitis patients and the sibling nearest in age and of same sex were examined with matched-pair analysis to evaluate the effect of previous poliomyelitis (polio) on social factors and general health. Fifty-four pairs with women (68 %), and 26 pairs with men (32 %) with a mean age 60.4 years were included. Data were collected by questionnaire. There was no significant difference in length of education between patients and siblings (categories < 8 years, 8-12 years, and > 12 years). Employment rate at age 40 years was 78 % for patients and 88 % for siblings (full-time or part…

The younger siblings of teenage mothers: a follow-up of their pregnancy risk.

This study followed 243 younger brothers and younger sisters of parenting teens and nonparenting teens across a 1.5-year period. The average age of siblings was 13.6 years at Time 1 and 15 years at Time 2. Relative to other youths, the sisters of parenting teens exhibited a sharp increase in drug and alcohol use and partying behavior across time and had the highest pregnancy rate at Time 2 (15%). The siblings of parenting teens spent 10 hr a week caring for their sisters' children, and, for girls, many hours of child care was associated with negative outcomes including permissive sexual behavi…

Lipoid proteinosis: report of four siblings and brief review of the literature.

We document the prevalence and the pattern of dermatologic diseases among primary and secondary school students visiting a Student Health Service Center in Hong Kong. In this study, the differences in prevalence of skin diseases between these two groups are pointed out. A total of 1006 students from both primary (n = 559) and secondary schools (n = 447) were seen in a regional, population-based screening center during the period from October 1996 to September 1997. Each student was asked to answer a simple questionnaire to identify any skin problems and to explore health-seeking behavior. Stud

Fetal diagnosis of lethal dysfunction of the right heart in three siblings.

A woman, having already delivered one child, underwent fetal echocardiography during three subsequent pregnancies. All three showed enlargement and poor function of the right-sided chambers. The first was still-born, the second died as a neonate, while the third pregnancy was terminated. Pathological examination revealed the same findings in each fetus, possibly representing a variation of Uhl's anomaly, or alternatively a hitherto unrecognised cardiomyopathic process.

Differential environmental factors in anorexia nervosa: a sibling pair study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have explored differences in psychosocial and familial factors between women who develop anorexia nervosa and those who do not. However, these studies have generally used between-group comparisons. This study looks at the environmental factors which may be antecedents of anorexia nervosa looking at sister pairs where one had anorexia nervosa and the other did not. DESIGN: A paired design was used to compare anorexic women with an unaffected sister on a number of background variables, including sibling interaction, parental care, peer group characteristics and othe
