Novel anatomically contoured locking plate shows improved anatomic conformity vs. a conventional T-shaped plate in anterior popliteus transtibial-tuberosity high tibial osteotomy: a radiologic comparison.

BACKGROUND: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) corrects varus malalignment and unloads the medial knee compartment, yet the conventional T-shaped locking plate may cause discomfort due to suboptimal anatomic conformity. We developed a novel locking plate to improve anatomic fit and fixation stability and compared it with the T-shaped plate in Anterior Popliteus Transtibial-tuberosity high tibial osteotomy (APTT-HTO). METHODS: This retrospective comparative study included 14 consecutive patients who underwent APTT-HTO between August 2024 and June 2025. Patients were grouped by implant type (novel pla

Failure analysis of a locking compression plate with asymmetric holes and polyaxial screws.

Locking compression plates (LCP) with asymmetrical holes and polyaxial screws are effective for treating mid-femoral fractures, but are prone to failure in cases of bone nonunion. To understand the failure mechanism of the LCP, this study assessed the material composition, microhardness, metallography, fractography and biomechanical performance of a retrieved LCP used for treating a bone fracture of AO type 32-A1. For the biomechanical assessment, a finite element surgical model implanted with the intact fixation-plate system was constructed to understand the stresses and structural stiffness

Meta-Learning Analysis of Ultrasonic Guided Waves for Coated Cortical Bone Characterization.

Due to its sensitivity to geometrical and mechanical properties of waveguides, ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) propagating in cortical bones … rence time-domain (FDTD) method and then applied to experimental data obtained from cortical bovine bone plates overlaid with soft tissue mimics. A good match was found between experimental trajectories and theoretical dispersion curves. The results demonstrated that the proposed method was feasible to assess the thickness of coated cortical bone plates.

Changes in subchondral bone morphology with osteoarthritis in the ankle.

Significant alterations to subchondral trabecular bone microarchitecture are observed in late-stage osteoarthritis (OA). However, detailed investigation of these changes to bone in the ankle are under-reported. This study aimed to fully characterise the trabecular morphology in OA ankle bone specimens compared to non-diseased (ND) controls using both standard and individual-trabecular segmentation-based (ITS) analyses. Ten ND tibial bone specimens were extracted from three cadaveric ankles, as well as five OA bone specimens from patients undergoing total ankle arthroplasty surgery. Each specim

Infants With Trigonocephaly Treated With Fronto-Orbital Remodelling and Endocortical Positioning of Resorbable Plates-A Retrospective Cohort Study Including 101 Patients.

PURPOSE: Fronto-orbital remodeling is the gold standard for surgical treatment of metopic synostosis in many craniofacial centers. For fixation, resorbable materials are widely used. Because of swelling during resorption, the positioning of the plates can be relevant. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate whether there are limitations to endocortical positioning of resorbable plates. METHODS: In this retrospective study, all patients with metopic craniosynostosis resulting in trigonocephaly, who were treated with a standardized fronto-orbital remodeling and endocortical positio

Premature Epiphyseal Closure of the Lower Extremities Contributing to Short Stature after cis-Retinoic Acid Therapy in Medulloblastoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged cis-retinoic acid (RA) exposure contributes to premature epiphyseal closure. cis-RA is administered in various treatment regimens for pediatric cancers, thus increasing the risk for bone deformities and compromised growth. RESULTS: We present a case of premature epiphyseal closure in a 9-year-old female with a history of medulloblastoma and treatment with a multimodal regimen including cis-RA. She was subsequently diagnosed with radiation-induced endocrine late effects including hypothyroidism and growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Seven months after initiation of GH thera

Biomechanical evaluation of different angle-stable locking plate systems for mandibular surgery.

PURPOSE: To compare the initial stability and stability after fatigue of three different locking systems (Synthes(®), Stryker(®) and Medartis(®)) for mandibular fixation and reconstruction. METHOD: Standard mandible locking plates with identical profile height (1,5 mm), comparable length and screws with identical diameter (2,0 mm) were used. Plates were fixed with six screws according a preparation protocol. Four point bending tests were then performed using artificial bone material to compare their initial stability and failure limit under realistic loading conditions. Loading of the plates

Intracranial Migration of Hardware 16 Years Following Craniosynostosis Repair.

Introduction: The techniques used to fixate osteotomized segments of bone have evolved alongside the treatment of craniosynostosis. The use of nonresorbable metal plates and screws offered a method of rigidly stabilizing repositioned segments of bone. Several reports specify the tendency for these fixation systems to "migrate" transcranially. Methods: We present a unique case of a patient who initially underwent treatment of multisuture craniosynostosis utilizing titanium miniplates at 6 months of age. At 16 years of age, the patient was returned to the operating room with complaints of pain a

Treatment of presumed aseptic non-union of the humeral shaft by osteosynthesis combining intramedullary nailing and screw plate.

In 2020, the most common treatment for presumed aseptic non-union of the humeral shaft seems to be decortication, often associated with bone autografting, and stabilized by a screw plate. We propose to evaluate an original technique of rigid osteosynthesis combining intramedullary nailing and screw plate. Between January 2004 and January 2020, 45 patients underwent treatment of presumed aseptic non-union of the humeral shaft by osteosynthesis combining intramedullary nailing and a screw plate. The minimum radio-clinical follow-up was one year postoperatively. The series included 19 men and 26

Peri-implant distal clavicle fracture: Case report (overlaying plate fixation: Solution for peri-implant clavicle fractures).

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Surgical treatment for clavicle injuries is indicated for displaced and shortened fractures. Osteosyntheses with plate fixation may present with complications in 6.3% to 8.5% of patients. Peri-implant clavicle fractures (PIF) are rare, and we have not found any previous cases in our literature search. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old male with previously (six years earlier) surgically treated clavicle fracture presented with a peri-implant clavicle fracture requiring surgical treatment. The management involved overlaying an implant to fix the lateral clavicle frac

Osteochondral Graft for Metacarpal Head Osteochondral Defects Occurring in a Child With an Open Growth Plate: A Case Report.

CASE: A 13-year-old adolescent boy with open growth plates in the metacarpal bones developed an osteochondral defect in the metacarpal head of his ring finger. The defect was treated by autologous osteochondral plug transplantation from the femoral condyle. The osteochondral plug was shortened enough to avoid damaging the growth plate and press-fitted to the recipient site. After surgery, the transplanted osteochondral plug united with the surrounding bone tissue, and the articular cartilage and growth plate were well preserved. CONCLUSION: Autologous osteochondral plug transplantation is a t

An Instrumented Hammer to Detect the Rupture of the Pterygoid Plates.

PURPOSE: Craniofacial osteotomies involving pterygomaxillary disjunction are common procedures in maxillofacial surgery. Surgeons still rely on their proprioception to determine when to stop impacting the osteotome, which is important to avoid complications such as dental damage and bleeding. Our group has developed a technique consisting in using an instrumented hammer that can provide information on the mechanical properties of the tissue located around the osteotome tip. The aim of this study is to determine whether a mallet instrumented with a force sensor can be used to predict the crossi

The acrophysis: a unifying concept for understanding enchondral bone growth and its disorders. II. Abnormal growth.

In order to discuss and illustrate the effects common to normal and abnormal enchondral bone at the physes and at all other growth plates of the developing child, the term "acrophysis" was proposed. Acrophyses include the growth plates of secondary growth centers including carpals and tarsals and apophyses, and the growth plates at the nonphyseal ends of small tubular bones. Abnormalities at acrophyseal sites are analogous to those at the physeal growth plates and their metaphyses. For example, changes relating to the zone of provisional calcification (ZPC) are often important to the demonstra

A mechanical Jack-like Mechanism drives spontaneous fracture healing in neonatal mice.

Treatment of fractured bones involves correction of displacement or angulation, known as reduction. However, angulated long-bone fractures in infants often heal and regain proper morphology spontaneously, without reduction. To study the mechanism underlying spontaneous regeneration of fractured bones, we left humeral fractures induced in newborn mice unstabilized, and rapid realignment of initially angulated bones was seen. This realignment was surprisingly not mediated by bone remodeling, but instead involved substantial movement of the two fragments prior to callus ossification. Analysis of

[Our experience about the use of resorbable plates in the treatment of craniostenosis].

INTRODUCTION: The use of resorbable plates increases for craniosynostosis surgery. This material, based on polymere (PLA, PGA) can replace steel wire and non resorbable plates. A few studies present surgical results about the use of this material with a long follow-up. We present our ten years experience of using resorbable material for craniosynostosis treatment in children. METHODS: Between 2002 and 2012, we operated 283 craniosynostosis (98 scaphocephalies, 55 trigonocephalies, 79 plagiocephalies et 51 craniofaciostenoses). Among these surgeries, 211 were realized with resorbable material

Biomechanical evaluation of CAD/CAM magnesium miniplates as a fixation strategy for the treatment of segmental mandibular reconstruction with a fibula free flap.

Titanium patient-specific (CAD/CAM) plates are frequently used in mandibular reconstruction. However, titanium is a very stiff, non-degradable material which also induces artifacts in the imaging. Although magnesium has been proposed as a potential material alternative, the biomechanical conditions in the reconstructed mandible under magnesium CAD/CAM plate fixation are unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the primary fixation stability and potential of magnesium CAD/CAM miniplates. The biomechanical environment in a one segmental mandibular reconstruction with fibula free flap induced by a c
