BACKGROUND: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic, potentially blinding ocular allergic disease affecting children with uncertain pathogenic mechanisms.
OBJECTIVE: To identify differences in gene expression between VKC and normal subjects (CT) and to evaluate the expression of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs).
METHODS: Conjunctival cells were collected by impression cytology device from 25 VKC patients and 10 CT. Isolated RNA was assayed with the NanoString human immunology codeset to evaluate the expression levels of immunology-related genes.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate central corneal thickness in patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted in the Atatürk University School of Medicine between April 2011 and June 2013. The study group included 60 eyes of 30 patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis. Sixty eyes of 30 healthy individuals without any ophthalmic or systemic pathology were used as a control group. Conjunctival fibrosis may result from chronic inflammation and may lead to alterations of conjunctival architecture. This results in ocular dryness, entropion and trichiasis, and corneal complications. Causes of conjunctival cicatrization are not limited to autoimmune diseases, such as ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, a severe disease associated with poor ocular prognosis. Other well-known causes include thermal and chemical burns, postinfectious conjunctivitis, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Ocular rosacea and atopic keratoconjunctivitis often are underdiagnosed causes of conjunctival fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis of and around the eye is common. Allergic contact reactions from phenylephrine are rare despite extensive use by ophthalmologists. Previous reports do not indicate crossreactivity between phenylephrine and other sympathomimetic drugs in patch testing.

Specific inhalation challenge (SIC) is the golden standard for identifying specific causes of work-related asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis. Few centres offer SIC as it requires experience, resources and acute treatment facilities. Prior to SIC treatment should be carefully reduced. A control challenge is performed on a separate day. Many new asthma causes have been identified with SIC. SIC provides the basis for optimal treatment and advice.
