Effect of Oral Administration of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SNK12 on Temporary Stress in Adults: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind, Parallel-Group Study.

Mouse studies have reported anti-stress effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SNK12 (SNK). Specifically, oral SNK administration increased mRNA levels of hippocampal neurotrophic factor and gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor in mice with sub-chronic mild stress-induced social defeat; moreover, it improved depressive behavior. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of SNK ingestion against stress in healthy adults. We used the Uchida-Kraepelin test for the stress load, with a low-dose (50 mg/day), high-dose (150 mg/day), and placebo groups (dextrin). The primary outcome was the psychological evalua

Outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection among patients with common variable immunodeficiency and a matched control group: A Danish nationwide cohort study.

The risk of severe adult respiratory coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and the course of the infection among individuals with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) relative to the general population have been a matter of debate. We conducted a Danish nationwide study comparing the timing of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, the risk of first confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, re-infection, and the outcome of infection among individuals with CVID relative to an age- and gender matched control group. Cox regression was used to calculate incidence rate ratios. The CVID patients received SARS-CoV-2 vaccin

Propolis increases Foxp3 expression and lymphocyte proliferation in HIV-infected people: A randomized, double blind, parallel-group and placebo-controlled study.

HIV infection and the prolonged use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) contribute to persistent inflammation and immune deregulation in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Propolis is a bee product with plenty of biological properties, including immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory action. This work aimed to evaluate possible changes in the immune/inflammatory response in PLWHA under ART after propolis intake. Asymptomatic PLWHA were double-blindly randomized into parallel groups receiving propolis (500 mg/day, n = 20) for 3 months or placebo (n = 20). Plasma cytokines (TNF-α, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6

Augmentative and alternative communication intervention for in-patient individuals with post-stroke aphasia: study protocol of a parallel-group, pragmatic randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with post-stroke aphasia commonly receive speech-language therapy (SLT) when they are admitted to hospitals. Commonly, these patients reported communication difficulties in in-patient settings. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has been reported as an effective treatment approach to improve communication effectiveness, language performance, decreasing depression, and improving quality of life for this population. However, little evidence has demonstrated the use of AAC intervention (AACT) in early recovery from people with post-stroke aphasia in in-patient reh

Two Distinct Mechanisms Leading to Loss of Virological Control in the Rare Group of Antiretroviral Therapy-Naive, Transiently Aviremic Children Living with HIV.

HIV-specific CD8+ T cells play a central role in immune control of adult HIV, but their contribution in pediatric infection is less well characterized. Previously, we identified a group of ART-naive children with persistently undetectable plasma viremia, termed "elite controllers," and a second group who achieved aviremia only transiently. To investigate the mechanisms of failure to maintain aviremia, we characterized in three transient aviremic individuals (TAs), each of whom expressed the disease-protective HLA-B*81:01, longitudinal HIV-specific T-cell activity, and viral sequences. In two T

The health-related quality of life and emotional distress among mothers of sons with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophies (n = 82) were compared to sex- and age group-matched controls (n = 26). Participants self-reported health-related quality of life for themselves and their son(s), emotional distress, and mood/anxiety-related medication. Mothers reported poorer health-related quality of life across all domains of their health-related quality of life, as well as higher levels of emotional distress. Clinically elevated symptoms of anxiety were reported by 39% of mothers. Mothers' report of

Text-Messaging, Online Peer Support Group, and Coaching Strategies to Optimize the HIV Prevention Continuum for Youth: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: America's increasing HIV epidemic among youth suggests the need to identify novel strategies to leverage services and settings where youth at high risk (YAHR) for HIV can be engaged in prevention. Scalable, efficacious, and cost-effective strategies are needed, which support youth during developmental transitions when risks arise. Evidence-based behavioral interventions (EBIs) have typically relied on time-limited, scripted, and manualized protocols that were often delivered with low fidelity and lacked evidence for effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine efficacy, im

Identifying the role of group III/IV muscle afferents in the carotid baroreflex control of mean arterial pressure and heart rate during exercise.

KEY POINTS: We investigated the contribution of group III/IV muscle afferents to carotid baroreflex resetting during electrically evoked (no central command) and voluntary (requiring central command) isometric knee extension exercise. Lumbar intrathecal fentanyl was used to attenuate the central projection of μ-opioid receptor-sensitive group III/IV leg muscle afferent feedback. Spontaneous carotid baroreflex control was assessed by loading and unloading the carotid baroreceptors with a variable pressure neck chamber. Group III/IV muscle afferents did not influence spontaneous carotid barorefl
