The over-designed limb: Skeletal robustness and locomotor adaptation in terrestrial and freshwater turtles.

The morphology and internal structure of tetrapod limb bones reflect complex interactions between functional demands, mechanical loading, an … heir skeletal design. Here, we present the first comprehensive whole-bone, longitudinal analysis of cortical bone mass, geometry, tissue quality, and mechanostat-related distribution/quality (d/q) relationships in turtle long bones, aiming to evaluate how locomotor ecology modulates bone design within the constraints of the turtle bauplan. We analyzed femora an …

Twelve months of voluntary heavy alcohol consumption in male rhesus macaques suppresses intracortical bone remodeling.

Chronic heavy alcohol consumption is a risk factor for cortical bone fractures in males. The increase in fracture risk may be due, in part, to reduced bone quality. Intracortical (osteonal) bone remodeling is the principle mechanism for maintaining cortical bone quality. However, it is not clear how alcohol abuse impacts intracortical bone remodeling. This study investigated the effects of long-duration heavy alcohol consumption on intracortical bone remodeling in a non-human primate model. Following a 4-month induction period, male rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta, n=21) were allowed to volunt…

An evaluation of insertion sites for mini-implants: a micro - CT study of human autopsy material.

OBJECTIVE: (1) To report the thickness of the cortical bone in insertion sites commonly used for orthodontic mini-implants, (2) to assess the impact of a change in insertion angle on primary cortical bone-to-implant contact, and (3) to evaluate the risk of maxillary sinus perforation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At autopsy, 27 human samples containing three to five adjacent teeth were excised and scanned using a table-top micro-computed tomography system. Bone thickness measurements were taken at 45° and 90° to the long the axis of the adjacent teeth, simulating a mini-implant insertion at the mid…

Bone Density, Microarchitecture, and Geometry Assessment in Patients with Pachydermoperiostosis Using Second-Generation High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography: A Case-Control Study.

Pachydermoperiostosis (PDP) is a rare genetic disorder manifesting with periostosis, clubbing, and thickened skin. The impact of PDP on bone density and microarchitecture is underexplored despite the potential derangement in bone health due to systemic inflammation. This cross-sectional case-control study was conducted in a tertiary care center in north India from July 2022 to July 2023. We compared treatment naïve PDP patients (n = 8) with age and BMI-matched apparently healthy controls. All participants underwent clinical examination and estimation of biochemical parameters including calcium

Differences in the effects of BMI on bone microstructure between loaded and unloaded bones assessed by HR-pQCT in Japanese postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between weight-related load and bone mineral density (BMD)/bone microstructure under normal load conditions usi … seven bone microstructure parameters. The first PC (PC1) reflected all parameters of trabecular and cortical bone microstructures, except for cortical porosity, whereas the second PC (PC2) reflected only cortical bone microstructure. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that BMI was more strongly related to BMD/bone microstructure in the tibia th …

Scaling effect on the mid-diaphysis properties of long bones-the case of the Cervidae (deer).

How skeletal elements scale to size is a fundamental question in biology. While the external shape of long bones was intensively studied, an important component of their organization is also found in their less accessible inner structure. Here, we studied mid-diaphyseal properties of limb long bones, characterizing notably the thickness of their cortices (bone walls), in order to test whether body size directly influences bone inner organization. Previous examinations of scaling in long bones used broad samplings to encompass a wide range of body sizes. To account for the effect of confounding

Bone histomorphometry in 22 male patients with normocalciuric idiopathic osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is associated with increased bone resorption together with a decrease in bone formation. In women, there is an increase of reso … out changes in the mineralization lag time or eroded surface in patients compared with controls. In cortical bone, there was a low cortical volume (Ct.V/TV) and cortical width (Ct.Wi) in patients compared with controls, without differences in cortical porosity (Po.V/TV). These results suggest that normocalciuric idiopathic osteoporosis in men is characterized b …

Optimal additional support screw position for prevention of hinge fracture in biplanar closed wedge distal femoral osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the biomechanical significance of supplemental fixation using a positional screw in prevention of the hinge fracture in lateral closed-wedge distal femoral osteotomy (LCW-DFO) by means of a three-dimensional finite element analysis. METHODS: The three-dimensional numerical knee models with LCW-DFO were developed. To assess the mechanical efficacy of the positional screw and determine its optimal position and orientation, in total, 13 screwing methods were analyzed. In the first four methods, the screw was supported by the cortical bone only…

Insulin therapy improves bone microstructure and material properties without restoring whole-bone strength in male insulin-deficient Akita mice.

Type 1 diabetes is associated with increased fracture risk, yet the respective contributions of insulin deficiency and replacement to skeletal fragility remain poorly understood. Using insulin-deficient male Akita mice, we characterized skeletal alterations and assessed the effects of early insulin therapy. Untreated male Akita mice displayed severe hyperglycemia, impaired growth, low bone formation, and marked trabecular and cortical deficits, resulting in reduced whole-bone structural mechanical properties. Insulin therapy initiated at early diabetes onset normalized glycemia, restored bone

A longitudinal imaging study of the effects of type 2 diabetes and microvascular disease on diabetic bone disease.

Skeletal fragility is a major complication of type 2 diabetes (T2D), occurring despite normal or elevated bone mineral density. However, pat … l deterioration in participants with T2D compared with controls, including a 3-fold greater loss in cortical bone mineral density and 6-fold greater increase in cortical porosity at the tibia. Significant longitudinal declines in intracortical vessel volume and perfusion were also observed in participants with T2D. No (T2D × MVD) interaction was observed for co …

Incorporation of particulated bone implants in the facial skeleton.

The purpose of this study was to compare the regenerative response of autogenous cortical and cancellous bone chips and a natural particulate resorbable bone mineral (RBM) (Bio-Oss, Geistlich-Pharma, Wolhusen, Switzerland) in standardized bony defects relating paranasal sinuses to one another and to bone blocks. On 13 skeletally mature female goats four standardized critical-sized full thickness bone defects were made in the frontal bone overlying the frontal sinus. These defects were filled at random with cortical bone chips, cancellous bone chips, spongiosa granules of a RBM or left empty. F…

Prednisolone treatment reduces the osteogenic effects of loading in mice.

Glucocorticoid treatment, a major cause of drug-induced osteoporosis and fractures, is widely used to treat inflammatory conditions and dise … ibits the loading-induced increase in trabecular BMD, and abolishes the loading-induced increase in cortical bone mass. This phenomenon could be due to prednisolone inhibition of osteoblast differentiation and function.

Late remodeling around a proximally HA-coated tapered titanium femoral component.

UNLABELLED: Most bone remodeling is thought to occur within the first few years after THA. Loss of bone density later may be associated with stress shielding or normal bone loss of aging. We evaluated remodeling changes over time with a proximally hydroxyapatite-coated tapered titanium stem. We evaluated plain radiographs of 143 hips for cancellous condensation, cortical hypertrophy, cortical porosis, cortical index, and canal fill at early postoperative, 5, 10, and 15 years. Average age was 51 years at THA; 69 patients (77 hips) (53%) were women; and 102 hips (71%) had primary osteoarthrosis.

Bone stress for a mini-implant close to the roots of adjacent teeth--3D finite element analysis.

This study aimed to evaluate stress in the bone when an orthodontic mini-implant is close to the roots of adjacent teeth using finite element models (FEMs), and to investigate the causes of the high implant failure rate in the mandible. Four FEMs were used: the implant touches nothing; the implant touches the surface of the periodontal membrane; part of the screw thread is embedded in the periodontal membrane; and the implant touches the root. The effect of cortical bone thickness was evaluated using values of 1, 2 and 3 mm. Maximum stress value and stress distribution on the bone elements was…
