Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer frequently coexist in older patients, posing significant challenges in clinical management due to overlapping risk factors and treatment-related complications. This narrative review summarizes current knowledge on the epidemiology, shared pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical impact of neoplastic comorbidities in older adults with cardiovascular diseases. It highlights the increased mortality, morbidity and diminished quality of life resulting from the coexistence of these conditions. The review also discusses personalized management strategies, emp

INTRODUCTION: Limited data exist on the role of sex in coagulation among geriatric trauma patients. This study aimed to assess gender-based differences in thromboelastography (TEG) and conventional coagulation profiles in this population. We hypothesized that older females exhibit faster clot formation and greater clot strength following trauma.
METHODS: We conducted a 5-year (2018-2023) retrospective review at an American College of Surgeons Level I trauma center. Included were geriatric trauma patients (65 years or older) with Level I activation and a rapid TEG obtained on arrival. Patients

PURPOSE: Aging is a significant risk factor for dysphagia. Speech and swallowing share the same anatomical and neurophysiological mechanisms and are closely related functions. Therefore, speech assessment can serve as a valuable tool for predicting the risk of dysphagia. Presbyphagia is a term that describes the impact of aging on swallowing function. This study aims to investigate the relationship between acoustic and aerodynamic parameters of voice and speech and presbyphagia in the normal geriatric population.
METHODS: A total of 96 individuals aged 65 and above participated in the study.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia in geriatric patients is associated with adverse outcomes, but often remains under-recognized in routine care. Evidence from nationwide real-world geriatric cohorts is limited, particularly regarding in-hospital outcomes and discharge pathways.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective nationwide cohort study using the Geriatric Minimum Data Set (GEMIDAS Pro), including 1403,790 geriatric hospital admissions between 2006 and 2024. Dysphagia was defined by ICD-10-GM code R13 recorded as a main or secondary diagnosis. Endpoints were in-hospital mortality, in-hospital aspiratio

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a cornerstone of geriatric medicine, yet the selection of optimal fixation strategies and surgical approaches remains a subject of intense clinical debate. As global demographics shift toward an aging population, the demand for THA is projected to rise exponentially, necessitating a thorough evaluation of perioperative outcomes and long-term survivorship. This review critically analyzes recent 2024-2025 evidence regarding the biomechanical stability and clinical efficacy of cemented versus cementless fixation in patients aged 70 years or older. Current literatur

BACKGROUND: Geriatric ankle fractures require treatment strategies aimed at early, safe mobilization with a risk of complications as low as possible. Surgical procedures are associated with an increased perioperative risk.
OBJECTIVE: To determine which fractures can be safely managed conservatively in older patients and which criteria are decisive.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Narrative review of the literature on randomized trials and systematic reviews.
RESULTS: Stable fractures, including Weber A and stable Weber B fractures, isolated medial malleolar fractures (Herscovici types A-C), and non-d

RATIONALE: Bipartite talus is a rare anatomical variation characterized by the division of the talus into 2 distinct fragments by a cartilaginous or fibrocartilaginous interface. Clinically, bipartite talus primarily manifests as posterior ankle pain accompanied by joint stiffness and start-up pain, necessitating differentiation from the posterior talus triangle. Currently, reported cases of bipartite talus are scarce, particularly among elderly patients, and treatment protocols remain scarcely reported.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 60-year-old female patient presented with persistent pain and limited

Adequate nutritional care is important to reduce adverse outcomes in hospitalized older adults. However, achieving adequate nutritional intake in geriatric units is challenging due to appetite-related disorders, chronic diseases, anabolic resistance, and limitations associated with oral nutritional supplementation. In this context, healthcare professionals often encourage patients to consume "at least the second plate," which is usually centered on protein-rich foods, as an attempt to preserve muscle mass and support recovery. However, it remains unclear whether this strategy alone is sufficie

The United States is experiencing rapid population aging, making geriatric oral health an increasingly important public health and clinical concern. Older adults bear a disproportionate burden of oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontal disease, edentulism, xerostomia, and oral cancer, many of which are closely linked to chronic systemic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive impairment. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on oral disease patterns and trends among older adults in the United States, with particular attention to the bidirecti

BACKGROUND: Swallowing care in older adults involves multiple providers, but how non-speech-language pathologist (SLP) providers approach dysphagia management is unclear. This study explored perspectives on dysphagia management among geriatrics-focused health care providers.
METHOD: A 21-item mixed-methods online survey study was disseminated to geriatrics-focused, licensed health care providers (excluding SLPs) using Qualtrics software (Qualtrics). The survey was opt-in, and all responses were collected anonymously. Health care providers were identified through various methods, including onl…

The growing prevalence of frailty among older adults presenting to acute care settings poses significant challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. Frail older patients are at increased risk of adverse outcomes, including delirium, functional decline, prolonged hospitalisation and mortality. Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), a multidimensional and interdisciplinary approach to evaluating medical, functional, psychological, and social needs, has emerged to tackle some of these challenges. Despite its central role in evaluating frail patients, CGA is often only introduced after admissi

BACKGROUND: Effective detection of cognitive impairment in the primary care setting is limited by lack of time and specialized expertise to conduct detailed objective cognitive testing and few well-validated cognitive screening instruments that can be administered and evaluated quickly without expert supervision. We therefore developed a model cognitive screening program to provide relatively brief, objective assessment of a geriatric patient's memory and other cognitive abilities in cases where the primary care physician suspects but is unsure of the presence of a deficit.
