BACKGROUND/AIMS: The effect of heterozygosity for the C282Y mutation in the HFE hemochromatosis gene on iron accumulation and disease progression in liver disease patients is unclear.
METHODS: We investigated the prevalence of this mutation in 531 patients and 205 healthy controls. PURPOSE: To compare the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in cirrhotic versus noncirrhotic livers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR images in 36 patients with HCC (30 men and she women aged 42-84 years [mean age, 65 years]) were retrospectively reviewed. The number and size of hepatic lesions were assessed. Lesion margins were categorized as well circumscribed or ill defined. We present an unusual case of a large pyogenic liver abscess containing multiple stones caused by perforation of a necrotic gallbladder and spread of the infection into the liver. To clarify the clinical significance of vitronectin, we compared the concentration of plasma vitronectin with serum fibrous markers and liver function test values in patients with chronic liver diseases. Children suffering from alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency hepatopathies, autoimmune hepatitis and from extrahepatic biliary atresia are cared for with the aim of rendering possible a liver transplant in case of liver insufficiency. Among the laboratory parameters signalling hepatic insufficiency the increase in the indirect bilirubin as well as the decrease of cholinesterase activity and the Quick are of great importance. So far it has not been possible to generalize from the data obtained from the longitudinal examination of patients in order to predict the prognosis of severe hepatopathies.

Thirty male Syrian golden hamsters were each infected with 100 metacercariae of Opisthorchis viverrini. The hamsters were killed at 3, 7, 15, 30, 154 days of infection. Report on the morphological assay of liver biopsies of 29 patients after acute or long-term influence of industrial poisons (pesticides, solvents). There were observed cytotoxic lesions with differently marked non-specific reactive hepatitis, the retrogression of which is demonstrated by repeated biopsies. As a rule a restoration took place after one year. Transitions in chronic liver diseases were not seen. It is referred to the particular importance to perform the first biopsy as much as early after the clinical discovery of such lesions of the liver.
