Breast metastases in adolescent girls: US findings.

We report five adolescent girls with secondary breast tumours. All were imaged by US and the imaging findings have been analysed. Four girls had rhabdomyosarcoma as the primary malignant disease and one had leukaemia. US features were variable, but most of the cases showed heterogeneous nodules which were quite different from the usual benign lesions (fibroadenoma, abscess, cyst) encountered at this age. The metastases produced a variety of echo characteristics: masses with well-defined margins, hyperechoic foci and sonolucent or hypoechoic nodules with posterior attenuation or lacking posteri

[Case report: pleomorphic adenoma of the lateral nasal wall].

Pleomorphic adenoma is a tumor which most often originates from one of the major salivary glands; it is rarely located in the lacrymal glands and it is highly exceptional in the nasal cavity. Cases of pleomorphic adenoma in the nasal cavity have been described by Spiro (40 cases), Compagno and Wong (40 cases) and Suzuki et al. (41 cases). This type of tumor generally originates from the septal mucosa even though the seromucosal glands are mostly located in the lateral nasal wall. This pathology is more frequently found in females. The clinical signs of this tumor are non specific, slow unilate

Osteomas of the maxillofacial district: endoscopic surgery versus open surgery.

Maxillofacial district osteomas are benign lesions with very slow growth. The most frequent localization is the frontal sinus, about 57% of all paranasal cavity osteomas; less frequently, they can be located in the ethmoidal sinus or sphenoidal and maxillary. Etiology has not completely clarified yet; nevertheless, there are 3 main pathogenetic theories: osteogenic, traumatic, and infective. Open procedures represent the gold standard, but there is still an unsolved debate for the best treatment option. Endoscopic techniques offer an alternative approach, enabling closer and more direct visual

Mantle cell lymphoma of the maxillary sinus invading the orbit.

BACKGROUND: Lymphomas are the most common primary orbital tumor in adults 60 years of age and older. Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a distinct subtype of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This case report describes a presentation of MCL with ocular involvement and discusses the management options. CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old black male Vietnam veteran presented with symptoms of numbness of the right tooth and gum area with right maxillary facial pain, which he described as stabbing in nature. After extensive evaluation, the patient's symptoms were found to be caused by MCL of the right maxillary s

Modification of endoscopic medial maxillectomy: a novel approach for inverted papilloma of the maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVE: To describe modification to endoscopic medial maxillectomy for treating extensive Krouse stage II or III inverted papilloma of the nasal and maxillary sinus. METHOD: Ten patients with inverted papilloma arising from the nasoantral area underwent diagnostic nasal endoscopy, contrast-enhanced computed tomography scanning of the paranasal sinus and pre-operative biopsy of the nasal mass. They were all managed using endoscopic medial maxillectomy and followed up for seven months to three years without recurrence. RESULTS: Most patients were aged 41-60 years at presentation, and most w

A new aspect of tri-modal therapy with superselective intra-arterial chemotherapy in maxillary sinus carcinoma.

CONCLUSION: This superselective intra-arterial intervention technique enabled us to administer a higher dose of cisplatinum to the local lesion with a lower incidence of adverse issues by use of neutralizer, compared with the conventional methods. OBJECTIVE: A wide variety of modalities, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, alone or in combination, have been reported for the treatment of maxillary sinus cancer. However, there is still much controversy with regard to the optimum treatment to obtain better local control and acceptable preservation of shape and function. Since 2001

Nasolacrimal sac hematoma masquerading as an orbital mass.

A distended or infiltrated nasolacrimal sac can present as a mass in the medial orbit. We present a case of aspergillus sinusitis complicated by intractable epistaxis after debridement of the nasal septum, which caused pain and rapid distension of the nasolacrimal sac. The clinical and radiographic appearance of the distended nasolacrimal sac mimicked the appearance of an orbital mass and orbital extension of aspergillosis. After embolization of the maxillary artery to control the epistaxis, the nasolacrimal sac hematoma spontaneously resolved, and the patient proceeded with his medical treatm

Prosthetic rehabilitation of a maxillectomy with a two-piece hollow bulb obturator. A clinical report.

Extensive bilateral midfacial defects involving the upper jaw, palate, and sinus present a formidable reconstructive challenge. A combination of total and subtotal maxillectomy is, in general, a rare surgical procedure that affects the cosmetic, functional, and psychological aspects of a patient's life. Prosthetic restoration has become the preferred method for the rehabilitation of such conditions. The use of magnets is an efficient means of providing combined prostheses with retention, quality, and stability. This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of a total and subtotal maxillect

Unusual case of plasma cell tumor with monoclonal gammopathy of the sino-nasal cavity and clavicular bone.

A rare case of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the sino-nasal cavity is presented. During a prolonged clinical course, the tumor has recurred several times after irradiation, chemotherapy and surgery, and presented in the clavicular bone as well. Immunohistochemical staining of each tumor showed IgA kappa phenotype, and immunoelectrophoresis of the serum showed overproduction of IgA with kappa light chains. Although an elevation of serum IgA persists, the patient has remained well without evidence of overt multiple myeloma.

A unique epithelioid vascular neoplasm of bone characterized by EWSR1/FUS-NFATC1/2 fusions.

An increasing number of epithelioid vascular lesions, in particular tumors from the benign and low-grade end of the spectrum, have been characterized by recurrent gene fusions. As a result, the detection of these molecular markers have improved the classification of diagnostically challenging cases. However, despite the significant progress, there are occasional lesions that do not fit in known histologic or molecular groups. Herein, we present five such unclassified epithelioid vascular lesions, which occurred in the bone and showed a distinct morphology composed of alternating vasoformative

Epidemiological Survey of Sinonasal Malignancy in North-East Iran.

INTRODUCTION: Sinonasal malignancies are uncommon neoplasms with several histological subtypes. These malignancies have a poor prognosis and, because of the nonspecific nature of the symptoms, most patients are diagnosed late when the disease is already at an advanced stage. Therefore, most sinonasal malignancies tend to be treated with surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. Understanding the incidence and prevalence of clinical symptoms, pathology, diagnosis, and subsequent prognosis of the disease is important for early diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of patients with a c

Spectrum of Sinonasal Tumors: A 10-year Experience at a Tertiary Care Hospital in North India.

OBJECTIVE: Sinonasal tumors are a highly heterogeneous group of tumors that account for less than 1% of all cancers. Precise diagnosis is essential because the natural history, treatment, and prognosis vary for different neoplasms. We reviewed 610 cases of sinonasal lesions to understand this entity better. METHODS: A total of 610 sinonasal biopsies/specimens were received over a period of 10 years (2004-14). All the samples were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Special staining for microorganisms and immunohistochemistry were performed where indicated. RESULTS: Benign lesio

Distant metastases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands and the value of diagnostic examinations during follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) accounts for approximately 10% of all neoplasms of the salivary glands. Late distant metastases and local recurrences are responsible for a rather low long-term survival rate. AIM: To study the metastasizing pattern of ACC of the salivary glands in 51 patients. METHOD: Fifty-one patients with an ACC in the intraoral/sublingual salivary glands (n = 30), parotid gland (n = 8), submandibular gland (n = 2), maxillary sinus (n = 6), and nasal cavity (n = 5) have been studied. The male-female ratio was 1:1, the mean age was 54.3 (range, 19-81) years. In 3

A Case of Femoral Neck Insufficiency Fracture due to Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare skeletal disease caused by hypersecretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) from neoplasms of mesenchymal origin; patients with TIO present with insufficiency fractures, progressive bone pain, and delayed fracture unions. Herein, we report the case of a 48-year-old man with an insufficiency fracture in his left femoral neck associated with TIO. The causative tumor located in the patient's maxillary sinus had been resected; however, complete resection was impossible due to the location of the tumor. Therefore, the patient's osteomalacia persisted

Elective neck irradiation versus observation in squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus with N0 neck: A meta-analysis and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Elective neck irradiation of a clinical node-negative (N0) neck in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the maxillary sinus is a controversial issue. METHODS: A systematic review of electronic databases and a meta-analysis were conducted to clarify the role of elective neck irradiation in patients with SCC of the maxillary sinus and clinical N0 neck. Regional (neck) nodal recurrence was chosen as the primary endpoint. RESULTS: Four retrospective studies with a total of 129 patients met the inclusion criteria. The results of the meta-analysis showed that elective neck irradiation redu
