BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Because of the increasing resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, we studied the actual resistance of isolates in Berlin.
PATIENTS/METHODS: 85 Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates were collected between 1995 and 1997. Susceptibility testing was performed for penicillin G, tetracycline, spectinomycin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin and azithromycin by agar dilution.

The in vitro activity of GAR-936, a new semisynthetic glycylcycline, was evaluated in comparison with two tetracyclines and the disk diffusion susceptibility test was assessed. Samples were collected from 148 adult cats, processed for isolation of Staphylococcus species and tested for susceptibility to penicillin G, gentamicin, oxacillin, amoxycillin, ampicillin, cephalexin and rifampin. To assess the activities of two glycylcyclines, N,N-dimethylglycylamido (DMG) derivatives of minocycline (MINO) and 6-demethyl-6-deoxytetracycline (DMDOT), 203 gonococcal isolates recovered at six sexually transmitted disease clinics in the western United States were evaluated. The antibacterial activity of several phyllanthimide analogs were investigated by the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Method (MIC) against E. coli and S. aureus. It was found that maleimides were approximately 30 times more active than succinimides indicating that the cyclic imido double bond is an important factor related to the activity. MICs and MBcCs of minocycline, doxycycline, methacycline and chlortetracycline for 8 strains of Pseudomonas mallei were determined. The chemotherapeutic efficacy of minocycline and doxycycline was studied on golden hamsters and their efficacy indices were estimated in comparison with those of chlortetracycline in the prophylaxis and treatment of experimental malleus. Minocycline was shown to be the most efficient drug in the treatment of malleus. Doxycycline in a dose of 0.25 mg/kg practically had the same efficacy as chlortetracycline in a dose of 25 mg/kg. Interaction of the cells of Bacillus anthracis strain CH-7 with benzylpenicillin was studied. The cells of strain CH-7 were shown to contain the penicillinase gene in the repressed state. Tetracycline-resistant Tet M-negative isolates of Actinomyces viscosus, Eubacterium lentum, Mobiluncus curtisii, and Mobiluncus mulieris were screened with the Tet K, Tet L, and Tet O DNA probes. Solutions of ciprofloxacin were irradiated with different wavebands of ultraviolet and visible radiation and the antibiotic activity of the drug was determined against Escherichia coli. In this study antibiotic susceptibilities of 334 gram negative bacteria to aminoglycosides, penicillins, cephalosporins, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and tetracyclines were evaluated by using Sceptor (BELR) microdilution system. These bacteria were isolated from urine samples at the microbiology laboratory. The sensitivity pattern of these gram negative bacteria have been found 70%, 26%, 41% and 25% respectively.
