The Witch-Hunt Narrative: Introduction and Overview.

This article provides an overview of The Witch-Hunt Narrative, focusing on the challenges of gathering information from young children, such as those involved in sexual abuse allegations in day care. The article summarizes the research methodology of The Witch-Hunt Narrative, which involves a series of case studies. The article articulates Cheit's hypothesis, which is that the witch-hunt narrative originated in two key publications, a series of articles by two journalists, Tom Charlier and Shirley Dowling, and the book, Satan's Silence: Ritual Abuse and the Making of a Modern-Day Witch-Hunt, b

Wrongful Acquittals of Sexual Abuse.

Ross Cheit's book The Witch-Hunt Narrative highlights the difficulties of prosecuting child sexual abuse. Drawing examples from a single case, Alex A., we examine the ways in which false acquittals of sexual abuse are likely to occur. First, prosecutors tend to question children in ways that undermine their productivity and credibility. Second, prosecutors have difficulty in explaining to juries the dynamics of sexual abuse and disclosure, making children's acquiescence to abuse and their failure to disclose when abuse first occurs incredible. Third, attorneys undermine children's credibility

Coping and help in birth: An investigation into 'normal' childbirth as described by new mothers and their attending midwives.

OBJECTIVE: to investigate how 'normal' childbirth is described by new mothers and their attending midwives. DESIGN: a qualitative, reflexive, narrative study was used to explore birth stories using in-depth, un-structured interviews. SETTING: 21 new mothers and their 16 attending midwives were recruited from the locality surrounding a district general hospital in South Wales, United Kingdom (UK). FINDINGS: the findings identified that the mothers wanted to cope with labour and birth, by breathing through it and using some birth interventions with the help of knowledgeable midwives. Midwives

Dead-baby dreams, transfiguration and recovery from infant death trauma in northeast Brazil.

Maternal reactions to infant death in Northeast Brazil have been at the epicenter of anthropological debate since the 1980s. This ethnographic study of 45 death narratives by bereaved mothers collected from 1979-1989 in Pacatuba, Ceará, Brazil, refutes existing claims of mothers' "selective neglect" and "indifference" towards sick babies and emotionally empty grief response. I argue that through dead-baby dreams--and their imaginary transfiguration-grieving mothers alleviate infant death trauma. Feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, definitive loss, and personal guilt-the social seeds of dep

Communicating stereotype-relevant information: is factual information subject to the same communication biases as fictional information?

Factual information is more frequently read and discussed than fictional information. However, research on the role of communication in shaping stereotypes has focused almost exclusively on fictional narratives. In Experiments 1 and 2 a newspaper article containing information about heroin users was communicated along chains of 4 people. No stereotype-consistency bias was observed. Instead, a greater proportion of stereotype-inconsistent information was communicated than was stereotype-consistent or -neutral information. Three further experiments investigated explanations for the difference be

Emotional reactivity and the overreport of somatic symptoms: somatic sensitivity or negative reporting style?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to examine the role of emotional reactivity (ER) in symptom reporting and conceptualize somatizing processes as a signal detection task. Emotional reactivity has been theorized to influence symptom reporting through somatic sensitivity as well as via a negative reporting style. We assess the degree to which these two competing theories about the role of ER are accurate within the signal detection framework. METHODS: We used a multimethod approach that included using both static and prospective self-reports as well as a signal detection task. RESULTS: R

Embedded-explicit emergent literacy intervention II: goal selection and implementation in the early childhood classroom.

This article, the second in a two-part series, provides guidance to speech-language pathologists (SLPs) for implementing the explicit component of the embedded-explicit emergent literacy intervention model for at-risk preschool and kindergarten children. The explicit component refers to the provision of regular structured therapeutic interactions that intentionally target critical emergent literacy goals. This article describes fundamental principles of explicit literacy instruction, identifies literacy domains targeted as part of explicit literacy instruction, and presents examples of how ear

Social processing deficits in agenesis of the corpus callosum: narratives from the Thematic Appreciation Test.

Clinical observations suggest that individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and normal IQ may have deficits in social intelligence. This study analyzed responses by normally intelligent individuals with ACC to pictures from the Thematic Apperception Test. A rating system was developed to assess three elements of story-generation: story logic, social understanding, and common content. Six individuals with ACC (five complete and one partial; IQs > 85) were compared to eight controls matched for sex, age, and IQ. Based on independent rankings of story protocols by two raters, the fi

Development of Narrative Abilities in (Re)telling a Story in Typically Developing Dutch School-Aged Children.

PURPOSE: The primary goal of this study was to examine the normal development of narrative abilities in children aged 4-9 years and to provide normative data for two (re)telling tasks. METHOD: We included 420 typically developing Dutch-speaking children aged 4-9 years. They completed tasks for story generation (Frog Story Test) and story retelling (Bus Story Test). Narrative samples were analyzed to calculate outcome measures on micro- and macrostructure. Age-related development was examined by linear regression analyses. To examine the effect of elicitation method (i.e., story generation vs.

Phonological skills of Persian monolinguals with social communication disorder: A comparison with typically developing peers and effects of narrative intervention.

There is a lack of research on how the phonological skills of Persian-speaking children with social communication disorder (SCD) compare to those of typically developing (TD) children and what the effects of narrative-based interventions may be on these phonological skills. While research suggests language interventions can indirectly enhance phonology, findings remain mixed. This study examined phonological skills in three Persian-speaking children (ages 3;7-5;0) with SCD with a pre/post-intervention longitudinal study design. Phonological measures included mean length of utterance in words (

Lessons from the margins: Narratives of black men living beyond prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: Although research on prostate cancer survivorship has grown, limited studies focus specifically on the lived experiences of Black prostate cancer survivors and how they navigate survivorship. This study explores how Black survivors describe their post-treatment experiences and examines how sharing these narratives may inform, support, and empower other Black men. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews via phone and Zoom with 22 Black prostate cancer survivors who had completed treatment five to ten years post-diagnosis. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, we id

Uncovering narrative aging: an underlying neural mechanism compensated through spatial constructional ability.

"The narrative" is a complex cognitive process that has sparked a debate on whether its features age through maintenance or decline. To address this question, we attempted to uncover the narrative aging and its underlying neural characteristics with a cross-validation based cognitive neuro-decoding statistical framework. This framework used a total of 740 healthy older participants with completed narrative and extensive neuropsychological tests and MRI scans. The results indicated that narrative comprises macro and micro structures, with the macrostructure involving complex cognitive processes

Research-based narrative videos to reduce stigma: insights from older women living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Older women living with HIV (WLWH) experience a heightened burden of stigma, compounded by age, gender, social isolation, and depression. Despite growing recognition of these challenges, few stigma reduction interventions are specifically designed for this population, particularly in the Southern United States. METHODS: We explored the acceptability, personal relevance, and perceived effectiveness of a stigma reduction video series tailored for older WLWH. The videos were developed based on findings from a prior qualitative metasynthesis and reflected the lifecycle of stigma acr

Exploring the Quality of School Experiences in Children Raised by Two Lesbian Mothers in Italy Through Children's Narratives.

Research on the school experiences of children with same-gender parents has been conducted through parents', teachers', and educators' narratives, while children's perspectives are still unexplored in the LGBTQ+ field. The present study explores the quality of school experience in 36 children (6-12 years; Mage = 8.98; SDage = 2.23) of 30 lesbian mothers (19 boys and 17 girls) born through assisted reproductive techniques. We used the specific section of the Friends and Family Interview regarding children's school experience (school experience section) that provides a measure of a child's schoo

"Not your normal drug dealing guy": How people who sell drugs construct positive narrative identities.

This study explores how persons who sell drugs construct positive narrative identities and thereby reject identities as "drug dealers" We inform our study with data collected via interviews with a group of 33 people actively involved in selling illicit drugs from St. Louis, Missouri, USA. We find that these participants create narratives wherein then frame their involvement in drug selling as a means to be "friends", "entrepreneurs", and "risk-managers". We discuss implications of these findings for criminological theories of neutralizations and restrictive deterrence. We also discuss implicat

Uncovering the hidden costs of free tuberculosis care: economic narratives of informal treatment supporters in rural Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) control strategies in Ghana emphasize free diagnosis and treatment, often overlooking the economic burden borne by informal treatment supporters typically family members, friends or community members who provide day-to-day care remains largely invisible in health policy discourse. These supporters play a crucial, yet underrecognized role in TB management, especially in rural areas where health system limitations intensify reliance on unpaid informal treatment supporters. OBJECTIVES: This study explores the direct and indirect costs incurred by informal TB treatme
