A rare but well-known anesthetic side effect is acute parotid gland enlargement after general anesthesia, sometimes known as anesthesia mumps or acute post-operative sialadenitis. Acute dehydration, obstruction of glandular excretory ducts caused by the position of the patient, and/or medications such as atropine that increase saliva viscosity have all been proposed as potential causes, while the specific cause is still unknown. We present a case of a 41-year-old patient who underwent a right open anatrophic pyelolithotomy for a staghorn calculus in the left lateral decubitus position and had

Angiomyolipoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm that typically occurs in the kidney sporadically or in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. Extrarenal angiomyolipomas are uncommon, and the liver is the most common extrarenal site. Other sites reported include the bone, colon, heart, lung, parotid gland, skin, spermatic cord, gynecologic regions, and retroperitoneum. A case of an angiomyolipoma involving the right adrenal gland in a 49-year-old female patient with tuberous sclerosis is reported. The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features are also discussed. Only 2 cases describing adrena

BACKGROUND: An infraclavicular pedicled flap (ICPF) was recently described in the literature. This anatomical region is attractive for the restoration of head and neck oncological defects. This paper is a review of our experience with this versatile flap.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted by reviewing the records of all the patients operated in a tertiary-care center between August 2013 and January 2019 whose surgery involved an ICPF.
RESULTS: Forty-four patients received an ICPF for various indications, including large vessel coverage in neck/parotid recontouring (34.1%), postlar

BACKGROUND: Critical evaluation of outcome of primary parotid carcinoma treatment is limited by pathologic diversity and low incidence numbers. Scientific evidence for the optimal management of the N0-neck is scarce and was, therefore, investigated in a systematic literature review.
METHODS: The articles included were published in English between 1997 and 2007 and describe populations with the definitive pathology, staging, and treatment. Of 1104 articles, 19 were selected, describing 2703 patients.
RESULTS: Of eligible populations, 83% were clinically N0. Pathology reporting of elective lym

Local invasion, hematogenous and lymphatic metastases are the major modes of spreading gastric cancer. The most common sites of metastases in patients with gastric cancer are liver, peritoneum, omentum, lungs and mesentery. Of the two pathological types of gastric cancer, intestinal-type gastric cancer showed preferential metastasis to the liver, whereas the diffuse-type showed a preference for peritoneal involvement and lymph node metastasis. However, metastases of gastric cancer to the head and neck regions are not common. The hematogenous route appears to account for a great majority of met

Mouse major urinary proteins (MUPs) are encoded by a family of ca. 35 genes that are expressed in a tissue-specific manner in several secretory organs; in the liver, in the submaxillary, sublingual, parotid and lachrymal glands, and in the skin sebaceous glands. In this paper we describe the isolation of a Mup gene, Mup-1.5a, which is expressed predominantly in the submaxillary gland of BALB/c mice. We show that Mup-1.5a is a member of a subfamily consisting of two closely related genes, both of which are closely linked to the Mup-1 locus on mouse chromosome 4. Mup-1 is the locus of a class of

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare and highly aggressive malignant salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for only 0.2% of salivary gland tumours. It predominantly affects the parotid gland and represents a significant concern with limited prevalence (1-1.2 individuals per million). We present a case of a 65-year-old female patient with a clinical history of swelling and pain in the right lower jaw region for six months. Diagnostic investigations revealed a well-defined submandibular gland lesion. Subsequent histopathological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the lesion to be SDC. T

The most common tumour of salivary gland is pleomorphic adenoma (PA). They are benign, painless, can grow into big tumours but usually do not affect nerves or lymph nodes. PA most commonly occurs in the parotid gland but it may involve submandibular, lingual and minor salivary glands also. They can attain giant proportions and weigh several kilograms. We report a giant PA arising in the submandibular gland and treated by complete surgical excision without any complication. A female patient presented with a tumour in the submandibular region and front of neck with a history of more than 18 year

Nodular fasciitis (NF) is a pseudosarcomatous reactive proliferative lesion that commonly occurs as a solitary, well-circumscribed, painful, rapidly growing soft tissue mass. It appears at any age, but incidence peaks in the third decade, with a slight predilection for women. It is most commonly located on the extremities, followed by the chest and trunk. Although a common site in the pediatric population, NF is found on the head and neck only in 7% to 20% in the adult population and includes the cheek, parotid region, zygoma, periorbital area, eyelid, forehead, and intraoral sites. The cause …

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) occurs more commonly in the minor salivary glands of the palate on than the tongue. ACC is a malignant neoplasm that accounts for 1-2% of all head and neck malignancies and 10-15% of all salivary gland malignancies. ACC affects the exocrine glands at any site, but the parotid gland is the most common site in the head and neck region. Many factors should be taken into account in the prognosis of ACC, including the histological and clinical stages of the disease. The most striking feature of ACC is that it is locally aggressive, with a high recurrence level, perine

A good examination in facial nerve imaging (CT or MR imaging) depends on a good knowledge of anatomy. Two clinical situations must be considered: imaging of patients with or without facial palsy. CT and MR imaging are very useful when the symptoms are atypical or progressive: MR imaging gives very good information about the facial nerve inflammation but may also discover a schwannoma, a hemangioma, a meningioma, or a primitive or secondary cholesteatoma. In malignant tumors of the parotid gland, a study of the fallopian canal must always be performed to delineate an extension in the mastoid, t

From 1985 to 1992 parotidectomy was performed at Vejle Hospital in 114 patients with a parotid tumour. Ninety-five of the patients completed a questionnaire. Twenty-four reported various degrees of pain at the time of the investigation, and 57 reported numbness or uncomfortable sensations of the skin. No association between symptoms and age, gender or follow-up time could be traced. Twenty patients with clinically significant complaints were subsequently interviewed and examined. Five patients had a neuroma in the scar region. Hypoaesthesia was found in 18/20 of the patients. The results empha

Seventeen cases of guttural pouch mycosis (including two bilaterally affected cases) were diagnosed in a three year period. The presenting signs were, in order of frequency, epistaxis at rest, nasal catarrh, pharyngeal paralysis, ipsilateral laryngeal hemiplegia, swelling of the submandibular/parotid region, extension of the head and neck and dyspnoea. Ligation of the origin of the internal carotid and occipital arteries was attempted in 10 of the cases exhibiting epistaxis. Bilateral ligation was performed on one animal with an untoward sequelae. Where surgery was successfully completed furth…

This paper describes a fluorescent pattern of human antibodies circulating in the serum of a 57 year old patient with lymphogranulomatosis. Following incubation with different FITC-labeled anti-human IgG sera including F(ab)2-fragments and with antibodies to human IgA, IgM, IgD, IgE as well as guinea pig serum and FITC-labeled anti-guinea pig serum (for proof the complement binding), it can be assumed that this is a non complement binding IgG antibody directed first of all against the rat gastric mucosal lamina propria (in the cardia and corpus and weaker in the pylorus region). Kallikrein has been localized in rodent kidney and salivary glands by means of an immunoglobulin-enzyme bridge technique. In sections of kidney, anti-kallikrein antibodies bound to the apical region of certain distal tubule segments in the cortex, to reabsorption droplets of proximal convoluted tubules, and to certain duct segments in the papilla. In salivary glands of both male and female rats and mice, and apical rim of most striated duct cells of submandibular, parotid and sublingual glands and granular tubules of submandibular glands exhibited immunoreactivity. We describe the case of an oncocytic papillary cystadenoma with mucinous differentiation of the parotid gland in a 64-year-old male. Histologically, the tumor exhibited distinctive areas of intracystic papillary growth pattern with microcystic and macrocystic spaces containing mucinous secretions and small crystals. The cyst wall and papillary fronds were lined by oncocytic admixed with numerous mucocytes. Lymphoid tissue and invasive features were not identified. The tumor showed strong expression of CK7 and mammaglobin in oncocytes, and BRST-2 and MUC4 in mucocytes. p63, ER, PR, SOX10, DOG-1

Myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of salivary glands that account for < 1% of all salivary gland tumors. The most common sites of involvement are major salivary glands mainly parotid gland. Intraorally, it can arise from minor salivary glands; palate is the most common site of occurrence. It also occurs in nasopharynx, paranasal sinuses, nasal cavity and larynx in head and neck region. Myoepithelial tumors were first described in 1943. Their malignant variant, myoepithelial carcinoma, was first reported by Stromeyer et al., in 1975, characterized by distinct morphologic heterogeneity

Hypertrophy refers to an enlargement caused by an increase in the size but not in the number of cells. Generalised masticatory muscle hypertrophy may affect the temporalis muscle, masseters and medial pterygoids in a variety of combinations. Masseteric hypertrophy may present as either unilateral or bilateral painless swelling of unknown origin in the region of angle of mandible. It is a relatively rare condition and presents a diagnostic dilemma. While the history and clinical examination are important in differentiating this benign condition from parotid or dental pathology, they cannot nece

There are several studies concerning branches of the facial nerve, but we encountered less information about the trunk of the facial nerve in the literature. During the routine dissection of a 65-yr-old Caucasian male cadaver, double facial nerve trunk emerged from the stylomastoid foramen and petrotympanic fissure were encountered. Because of an extremely rare variation, we presented this case report. In addition this cadaver had two buccal plexuses. These plexuses and other branches were formed to structures like to polygon. These anatomic peculiarities were described, photographed and illus
