Pectus carinatum.

Pectus carinatum or keel chest is a spectrum of progressive inborn anomalies of the anterior chest wall, named after the keel (carina) of ancient Roman ships. It defines a wide spectrum of inborn protrusion anomalies of the sternum and/or the adjacent costal cartilages. Pectus carinatum is often associated with various conditions, notably Marfan disease, homocystinuria, prune belly, Morquio syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, Noonan syndrome, and mitral valve prolapse. Treatment of pectus carinatum by nonsurgical methods such as exercise and casting has not been worthwhile, whereas surgical man

Application of real-time ultrasound technology to estimate in vivo breast muscle weight of broiler chickens.

1. Real-time ultrasound (RTU) is a fast, non-destructive and relatively inexpensive technique to estimate body composition in animals. 2. A total of 835 Hubbard, Ross and Cobb broilers from different flocks were randomly selected, weighed and two RTU measurements were taken from both sides of their breast muscles (BM). Immediately following ultrasonography, broilers were processed and dissected to determine carcase, boneless BM, leg quarter and wing weights. Data were utilised to develop multiple linear regression equations (MLRE) to estimate carcase part weights. 3. Factors such as sex, age o

Intrafamilial phenotypic heterogeneity of the Poland complex: a case report.

Three cases of familial unilateral gluteal hypoplasia are reported. The index case in addition to having gluteal hypoplasia also has unilateral pectoral muscle hypoplasia. Another relative has unilateral symbrachydactyly of the distal phalanges of one foot. All four affected individuals in our pedigree were female. We propose that our cases are best classified as part of the Poland complex of anomalies. Our cases emphasize that intrafamilial phenotypic heterogeneity is possible within the Poland complex.

Pectoralis flap reconstruction in resection of anterior skull base tumors.

Prognosis was once considered hopeless for many patients with malignant neoplasms of the anterior skull base. Craniofacial resection of these lesions has now been found curative for many patients. However, massive resections of the anterior skull base pose many potentially life-threatening complications. Cerebrospinal fluid fistula with meningitis is especially troublesome when previous radiation therapy compromises wound healing. In such circumstances local tissue flaps and skin grafting may not provide reliable separation of the brain from the nose. The pectoralis major myocutaneous flap was

[Surgical management for residual or recurrent diseases in the neck after radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the surgical managements for residual or recurrent diseases in the neck after radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. METHODS: Seventy-eight cases of neck masses (39 cases for unilateral residual diseases, 9 for bilateral residual diseases and 30 for recurrent diseases) after radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma who were treated surgically between January 1990 and December 2005 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 56 males and 22 females. Their ages ranged from 28 to 65 years (median 41 years). There were 27 patients with skin involvement. After preoperati

[Study on decellularized laryngeal scaffold in dogs].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the survivorship and character of decellularized laryngeal scaffold in pectoralis major muscle flap in canine. METHODS: Eighteen donor larynx in experimental group were decellularized by perfusing sodium dodecyl sulphate. Three of them were used to detect the character of histology. The other fifteen ones were embedded in right pectoralis major muscle flap of acceptor canine. Donor larynx in control group were not perfused. Other experimental procedure was the same as experimental group. The specimens were harvested at two weeks, one month and two months after operation,

Successful tracheal necrosis management using a pedicle pectoralis flap: A case report.

Thyroidectomy is considered an overall low-risk procedure. However, severe life-threatening complications, including tracheal necrosis may occur postoperatively. A 45-year-old male patient was referred to our clinic for papillary thyroid carcinoma surgery. The patient had mediastinitis signs and symptoms seven days after total thyroidectomy. Subsequent imaging demonstrated air leak and with mediastinitis as the primary diagnosis, and the patient underwent reoperation. During the operation, four necrotic tracheal rings were found to be the source of air leak. Due to tissue inflammation and infe

Development and clinical significance of the musculus dorsoepitrochlearis in men.

Musculus dorsoepitrochlearis is a typical muscle variation, which, if in full extent, is represented by the muscular or fibromuscular slip detached from the anteroinferior border of the musculus latissimus dorsi. It passes over the axilla under the axillary fascia crossing the medial side of the brachial plexus and continues as a septum intermusculare mediale brachii distally to the medial epicondyle of humerus. Its full extent is rarely developed-the connection into the intermuscular septum being mostly absent. Muscular slips from the musculus latissimus then insert on various structures in t

Triple Pedicled Flap Reconstruction for the Pharyngeal Necrosis: One-stage Suture of the Deltoid-pectoral Flap Harvesting Area.

The patient was a 71-year-old male with hypopharyngeal carcinoma who underwent right-sided neck dissection for lymph node metastasis, adjuvant radiotherapy (70 Gy), and cisplatin chemotherapy, he developed neck inflammation with evidence of free air on computed tomography and subcutaneous fistula formation on laryngoscopy. After total laryngectomy, bilateral neck vessels were obscured by scar tissue secondary to radiotherapy and chronic inflammation. Pedicled pectoralis major (PM) flap was favored for reconstruction. A 20×7 cm PM flap was harvested from the right thoracic region, and the muscl

The prevalence and characteristics of the subclavius posticus muscle in the adult population on MRI.

PURPOSE: The subclavius posticus muscle (SPM) is an aberrant muscle, and the presence of the SPM has a clinical significance, since the SPM might lead to thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). To date, no radiological study has been evaluated the prevalence of the SPM in the adult population. In this study, we aimed to assess the prevalence of the SPM using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed brachial plexus, neck, and thoracic MRI of the patients who underwent MRI for various pathologies. Only the patients whose MRI examinations did not have sufficient image quali

Sternal dehiscence, a reconstructive challenge. Case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Sternotomy is the main surgical procedure used to access the heart and great vessels. Among its most important complications is post-sternotomy dehiscence with an incidence of 10 %; the main risk factors for its occurrence are diabetes mellitus, obesity or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a clinical case of a 74-year-old male patient with sternal dehiscence secondary to sternotomy for myocardial revascularisation. CLINICAL DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Surgical dehiscence of sternotomy presents remarkable complexity and poses a s

Synmastia: prevention and correction.

Synmastia is a condition of aberrant communication of the breasts. Apart from the rare congenital cases, this is usually a result of technical complications during breast augmentation surgery caused by an overdissection at the medial side of the pocket, over the sternum, in the subglandular plane; or overdivision of the major pectoralis muscle insertion along the sternum, in the submuscular plane. A multidatabase search about synmastia has been performed. Between November 2004 and April 2009, the senior author (G.S.) has performed 924 breast augmentations and his experience in preventing synma

[Motor neuron disease with respiratory insufficiency as primary manifestation].

A 66-year-old man with dyspnea on exertion suffered a cardiac arrest and was referred to our hospital after emergency room intubation. Chest X-ray films detected no abnormalities. Blood gas analysis showed hypoxemia with normal A-aDO 2, and pulmonary function tests revealed combined ventilatory impairment. Chest fluoroscopy revealed weakness of diaphragmatic motion. No other abnormalities were found on initial examination. It was difficult to wean the patient off mechanical ventilation and identify the cause of alveolar hypoventilation. On the 60th hospital day, a neurological examination and

Vascular origin of Poland syndrome? A comparative rheographic study of the vascularisation of the arms in eight patients.

Vascularization of the arms has been studied by impedance plethysmography (rheography) in eight children with Poland syndrome, a common malformation characterized by unilateral hand anomaly and ipsilateral aplasia of the inferior head of the pectoralis major muscle. A marked decrease of the velocity of the systolic increase in the arterial volume (Velm) was shown in the affected arms, and the difference between the two arms was significantly higher in the patients than in a control group (P less than 0.02). These results, which are also observed in stenotic atherosclerosis, support the hypothe

The Impact of Physical Therapy on Postural and Myotonometric Disorders in Patients with Pectus Excavatum: Study Protocol.

Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common deformity of the chest wall seen in children and adolescents. Besides its visible depression of the chest, this condition often causes functional impairments affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as postural issues. Additionally, the aesthetic aspect of the deformity can greatly impact the psychosocial well-being of those affected. This study aims to evaluate the effect of a tailored physiotherapy program on children and adolescents with PE, focusing on musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, postural, and balance measures. A total of
