Intense nocturnal warming alters growth strategies, colouration and parasite load in a diurnal lizard.

In the past decades, nocturnal temperatures have been playing a disproportionate role in the global warming of the planet. Yet, they remain a neglected factor in studies assessing the impact of global warming on natural populations. Here, we question whether an intense augmentation of nocturnal temperatures is beneficial or deleterious to ectotherms. Physiological performance is influenced by thermal conditions in ectotherms and an increase in temperature by only 2°C is sufficient to induce a disproportionate increase in metabolic expenditure. Warmer nights may expand ectotherms' species therm

Is the temperature of tumescent anesthesia applied in the endovenous laser ablation important? comparison of different temperatures for tumescent anesthesia applied during endovenous ablation of incompetent great saphenous vein with a 1470 nm diode laser.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to investigate whether the temperature of tumescent anesthesia is important, if so, to establish an opinion about the ideal temperature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Endovenous laser ablations were performed in 72 patients; 35 patients (Group A) received tumescent anesthesia at +4℃, while other 37 patients (Group B) received tumescent anesthesia at room temperature. The groups were compared in terms of intraoperative pain, postoperative regional pain, ecchymosis, paresthesia, skin burns and necrosis. At month 1, great saphenous vein was evaluated for recanalization and patien

Beneficial effects of footbaths in controlling spasticity after stroke.

Footbaths are considered to provide beneficial thermal therapy for post-stroke patients with spasticity, but their anti-spastic effects have … de, F-wave/M-response ratio, changes in modified Ashworth scale (MAS), body temperature and surface-skin temperature. The mean values of both F-wave parameters were higher on the affected side before footbath treatment. In post-stroke patients, the mean values of F-wave parameters were significantly reduced after footbath treatment (P < 0.01). The anti-spastic eff …

Influence of different wavelengths of evening indoor lighting on salivary secretion and cutaneous temperature of the feet.

The experiment investigated the effect of light wavelength upon salivary secretion and cutaneous temperature of the foot in humans. Seven he … 14.98 +/- 3.80 g/h in the IL condition and 11.55 +/- 2.60 g/h in the FL condition (p < 0.057). Foot skin temperature was significantly higher in IL than FL during the period 1800-2400 h. These findings suggest that the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for serous saliva flow, is less suppressed by IL condition, and that the sympathetic nervous s …

TRPM8-Dependent Dynamic Response in a Mathematical Model of Cold Thermoreceptor.

Cold-sensitive nerve terminals (CSNTs) encode steady temperatures with regular, rhythmic temperature-dependent firing patterns that range fr … tal results, TRPM8 is also needed for the ongoing activity in the absence of stimulus (i.e. neutral skin temperature). Free parameters of the model were adjusted by an evolutionary optimization algorithm, allowing us to find different solutions. We present a family of possible parameters that reproduce the behavior of CSNTs under different temperature protocols. T …

Temperature and pH effects on Ca2+ sensitivity of cardiac myofibrils: a comparison of trout with mammals.

Active salmonids maintain myocardial contractility at temperatures that are cardioplegic for mammals. We postulated that myofibrillar Ca2+ sensitivity in the trout heart might 1) exhibit lower temperature dependence and/or 2) be greater over the range of physiological temperatures. Temperature-induced changes in intracellular pH may also play a role as alkalosis typically increases calcium affinity of myofibrillar adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase). Ca2+ sensitivities of ventricular myofibrillar ATPase were determined in rats and in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) over a physiological range
