Risk assessment before extraction for immediate implant placement in the posterior mandible: a computerized tomographic scan study.

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists in treatment planning relative to the attempt of saving a tooth with unfavorable prognosis or extracting it and placing an immediate or delayed implant. Preextraction radiographic assessments of teeth are traditionally performed using two-dimensional periapical and panoramic radiographs. These can reveal bone loss around a tooth, but have limited use in assessing implant risk before tooth extraction. Three-dimensional radiographs or cone-beam (CB) or computerized tomographic (CT) scans are often taken after tooth extraction and socket healing to assess the healed

Regeneration processes of alveolar bone and microvascular changes after the application of platelet-rich fibrin.

OBJECTIVES: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a promising agent for bone regeneration (BR). Platelets contain several growth factors that promote angiogenesis and BR. In this study, we observed the morphology of alveolar BR. METHODS: PRF (Advanced PRF: A-PRF) was prepared by extracting 10 mL of blood from each dog in a collection tube before tooth extraction. The samples were centrifuged at 200 × g for 8 min and incubated for 10 min to allow clotting. The alveolar socket on the dentition's right side was densely filled with PRF. The opposite side, which did not receive PRF, served as the control

Molar socket shield technique with immediate implant placement maintains stable tissue architecture at 5- to 7-year follow-up: A clinical series.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Immediate implant placement in fractured molar sites presents surgical challenges because of the complex root anatomy and the risk of buccal plate resorption. The molar socket shield technique with atraumatic tissue handling may help preserve the alveolar architecture and enhance peri-implant outcomes. However, the long-term success of this technique has not been well reported. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical series was to evaluate long-term success in terms of peri-implant tissue health after the molar socket shield technique and immediate implant placement. MATE

Canine autotransplantation: effect of extraction site preservation with a titanium prosthesis and a bioresorbable membrane.

The permanent canine is the most frequently displaced or impacted tooth. The standard treatment for an impacted canine includes surgical exposure and orthodontic alignment. Autotransplantation is a treatment alternative for canines with complete root formation. The purpose of this article is to report a canine autotransplantation where the extraction site was preserved with a titanium prosthesis and a bioresorbable membrane. The autotransplanted canine had minimal root resorption and no ankylosis.

Biocompatibility evaluation of alendronate paste in rat's subcutaneous tissue.

Alendronate is a known inhibitor of root resorption and the development of alendronate paste would enhance its utilization as intracanal medication. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the biocompatibility of experimental alendronate paste in subcutaneous tissue of rats, for utilization in teeth susceptible to root resorption. The study was conducted on 15 male rats, weighing approximately 180-200 grams. The rats' dorsal regions were submitted to one incision on the median region and, laterally to the incision, the subcutaneous tissue was raised and gently dissected for introduction of

Three-dimensional localization of maxillary canines with cone-beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Precise 3-dimensional (3D) localization of impacted canines is central to their clinical management. Recently introduced dental 3D volumetric imaging systems make precise localization possible. The purpose of this study was to describe the spatial relationship of impacted canines by using images obtained with the NewTom QR-DVT 9000 (QR Srl, Verona, Italy). METHODS: Unilaterally and bilaterally impacted canines (n = 27) from 19 consecutive patients (15 female, 4 male) were evaluated on images taken with the NewTom QR-DVT 9000. The spatial relationships of the impacted canines rel

Quantitative evaluation of extraction socket healing following the use of autologous platelet-rich fibrin matrix in humans.

Platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) is an autologous biologic material created by centrifugation of blood. This study quantified ridge changes associated with the healing of 21 extraction sites using PRFM alone as a graft. Standardized measurements of ridge width and height were recorded at extraction, after graft placement, and after 4 months of healing. Mean width resorption 3 and 5 mm apical to the crest was 0.32 mm (4.71% loss) and 0.57 mm (7.38% loss), respectively. Mean height resorption was 0.67 mm (7.13% loss). Sites grafted with PRFM alone displayed rapid clinical healing, minimal flap

[From an immediate implant placement in the post-extraction phase towards immediate loading application: current status].

The fresh extraction socket site in the immediate post-extraction phase possesses unique characteristic wound healing cascade. Marked horizontal and vertical resorption of the edentulous ridge occurred shortly following tooth extraction. In periodontally involved teeth, when partial/full socket wall destruction is evident, the ingrowth of connective tissue into the extraction site is unavoidable leading to a deficient ridge. The use of bone substitute materials aiming to preserve the alveolar ridge by stabilizing the blood clot, thus maintaining the volume of the site and at the same time serv
