Surgical Tools for the Interventional Radiologist.

Many of the instruments used in interventional radiology originated in surgical practice and have been adapted for minimally invasive procedures. Formal training in the design, handling, and optimal use of these instruments is not typically included in interventional radiology education. The purpose of this article is to provide a basic overview of these tools, including their names, variants, uses, and other potentially valuable details, using a pictorial approach. Included are scalpels, pickups, scissors, needle drivers, clamps, retractors, electrocautery, and sutures.

Stacked 2-D and 1-D Arrays Dual-Core Probe for Ultrasound-Guided Sonoporation.

Sonoporation represents a promising drug delivery modality in oncology. This modality consists of insonifying the targeted tissue with a low-frequency ultrasound beam (typically 1 MHz) following the intravenous injection of gas microbubbles. Activation of these microbubbles under the influence of the ultrasound field increases the permeability of biological barriers, thereby facilitating the passage of therapeutic agents and enhancing their therapeutic efficiency. To support this type of image-guided therapy, a bi-modal probe was designed and characterized. This probe combines a 128-element li

Toward a fully wireless endovascular neural interface: Evaluating power transfer efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular neural interfaces (ENIs) offer a minimally invasive approach for neural stimulation and recording without the need for open brain surgery. However, current generation devices have long transvascular wires from the implant site to the chest. Eliminating these wires will unlock clinical usability, including lowering infection risk from transvascular wires, reducing the risk of thrombosis from altered hemodynamics, and improving mechanical reliability. However, removing these transvascular wires would require efficient power transfer across the skull and tissue while meet

Towards all optically powered miniature devices in remote locations of the body.

Optical power and data transmission enable high-speed, multimodal functionality in miniaturized biomedical devices, overcoming critical limitations of traditional electronic wiring in terms of size, functionality, speed, and safety. In this work, we present a proof-of-concept for a fully optically powered, chip-on-tip micro-camera endoscope with a 3.0 mm outer-diameter catheter, designed for minimally invasive surgical guidance and in vivo diagnosis. Power is delivered through a multimode optical fiber to a custom photovoltaic cell, which supplies sufficient energy to drive a sub-millimeter CM

Validation of a New Handheld Automated Fixed-Force Applanation Tonometer.

PURPOSE: To validate a novel tonometer on ex vivo human eyes. METHODS: A device was constructed to apply a known and constant force using a custom tonometer tip, and the resulting applanation image is recorded with a camera. Software automatically measures the applanation area and converts to an intraocular pressure (IOP). Ex vivo human eyes were cannulated, and the IOP manometrically was set to 5 to 45 mm Hg in 5-mm Hg increments. At each IOP, a 5- to 10-second recording was obtained with the device and converted to an IOP. Measured IOPs were compared to the set IOP value. RESULTS: Eight ex

Magnetically levitated metasurface enabling tangible and bidirectional human-machine interaction.

Mechanical metasurfaces are deformable surfaces that reconfigure their shape in response to external stimuli, with growing applications in interactive displays and human-machine interfaces. However, many existing systems are either too fragile for physical interaction or too slow to match human response. Moreover, their incompatibility for integrating functional systems constrains seamless interaction with humans. We developed a robust, rapidly responsive, and multifunctional soft metasurface capable of intuitive interaction with humans. The soft surface reconfigures through magnetic actuation

BeetleBot: An integrated bioinspired soft robot for multimodal sensing and adaptive interaction.

Biological organisms exhibit tightly integrated motor functions, sensory input, and control systems that enable adaptive behaviors across diverse environments. Emulating such coordination in robotics remains challenging, as most soft machines compartmentalize actuation, sensing, and control. Here, we present BeetleBot, an adaptive beetle-bioinspired soft robot platform that seamlessly integrates programmable locomotion, object manipulation, sensory feedback, and intuitive human-machine interaction. BeetleBot features electrothermally actuated liquid crystal elastomer muscles embedded in modula

Are There Thermal Risks Associated With Dry Arthroscopy? A Simulated Comparison of Temperatures in Wet Versus Dry Wrist Arthroscopy.

PURPOSE: Dry arthroscopy of the wrist is comparable in safety to wet arthroscopy and is preferred in some cases as it avoids fluid extravasation. However, there is a potential for increased temperatures within the joint and risk of tissue damage. The purpose of this study was to document the maximum temperatures measured in a wrist simulator under dry and wet conditions using different arthroscopes and light sources. METHODS: A custom designed testing rig with an enclosed space was fabricated with ports to allow for insertion of a temperature probe, arthroscope, and drainage port. Three diffe

Irrigation performance of a 2-mm rigid cystoscope designed for neonatal cystoscopy: a bench study.

PURPOSE: Neonatal and infant cystoscopy is limited by narrow urethral caliber and the lack of sufficiently small cystoscopes with adequate irrigation. We developed a 2-mm (6 Fr) rigid cystoscope prototype and evaluated irrigation performance in a benchtop open-flow system. METHODS: The prototype incorporated a 0.9-mm optical channel, a 0.7-mm working channel, and two irrigation lumens (0.48 mm each). Irrigation performance was assessed under gravity and cuff-assisted irrigation, including temperature-controlled experiments. The maximum cuff pressure of 300 mmHg was used as an upper-bound benc

Design of a kinematic-compatible passive spinal exoskeleton with parallelepiped units.

Prolonged stooping induces sustained high spinal loading and low back pain (LBP). While passive exoskeletons provide a potential solution, they are limited by poor kinematic compatibility and insufficient degrees of freedom (DOF). This study proposes a novel kinematic-compatible passive spinal exoskeleton (KC-PSE) using parallelepiped units. It offers multiple degrees of freedom to adapt to spinal motions in sagittal and coronal planes. Based on potential energy conservation, complete gravity compensation conditions are rigorously derived. Numerical simulations on a 4-unit design validate full

Sequential evaluation of a robotic dry-bone resection system using virtual model control with integral control: an exploratory benchtop study.

Virtual model control (VMC) provides compliant trajectory execution, but sustained contact loads can produce residual positional error. This study evaluated the sequential development of VMC augmented with integral control for powered dry-bone resection and assessed the effects of end-effector stabilisation, spatial calibration and operating parameters. A seven-degree-of-freedom Franka Research 3 robot was commanded using VMC with integral control and carried a 4-mm diamond-tipped arthroscopic burr through a programmed 10 × 10 mm serpentine trajectory in 20 pounds-per-cubic-foot synthetic bone

Ankle-foot orthosis mechanical testing: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are assistive devices that support the ankle during gait. AFO mechanical properties, such as rotational stiffness about the ankle, influence the level of support these devices provide. Interest in quantifying AFO mechanical properties is on the rise but is limited by the lack of standardized measurement and assessment techniques. This scoping review discusses existing techniques for the measurement of AFO mechanical properties and introduces a taxonomy for organizing and describing these methods. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using a snowballin

A U-shaped robotic gripper with displacement and deformation controlled by programmable magnetic fields.

Magnetic soft robots are widely employed in micromanipulation applications because of their inherent biocompatibility, untethered actuation capabilities, and controllability. This study presents the fabrication and application of a U-shaped robotic gripper (U-SRG) and experimentally verifies the control performance of a magnetic control system for two-dimensional (2D) rotation, translational motion, deformation, and microsphere grasping. The magnetic component of the U-SRG was fabricated by doping polydimethylsiloxane with neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) powder, followed by molding via post-treat

Robust Model Predictive Control of a Gait Rehabilitation Exoskeleton With Whole Body Motion Planning and Neuro-Dynamics Optimization.

Conventional lower limb exoskeletons (LLEs) and their corresponding rehabilitation protocols can hardly provide safe and customizable gait rehabilitation training for different patients and scenarios. Thus, this study presents an 8-DoF rehabilitation LLE equipped with a cable-driven body weight support (BWS) mobile mechanism. The mobile BWS mechanism is designed to follow the wearer and offer preset supportive forces and balance protection. A whole body motion planning approach is proposed, wherein iterative null-space projection is employed to solve the task-space trajectories of gait trainin

[Research on flow characteristics of dual-outlet centrifugal disk blood pumps].

Tesla blood pumps demonstrate a reduced propensity for hemolysis and thrombosis compared with vane blood pumps. Considering the restricted driving force within the secondary flow channel of vane blood pumps, along with the low hydraulic efficiency of conventional Tesla blood pumps and their internal flow characteristics that significantly contribute to hemolysis and thrombosis, this study introduces a set of vanes atop the rotor of the Tesla blood pump. This forms a dual-fluid domain rotor, and an axial dual-outlet volute shell structure is adopted to realize the separation of the fluid domain
