BACKGROUND: Adenocarcinoma of the stomach is rare in children and adolescents. A unique case, presenting as an acute abdomen with pneumoperitoneum, is discussed.
METHODS: Case presentation and literature review.
RESULTS: A 13-year-old girl with perforated gastric adenocarcinoma treated by wedge resection developed metastatic disease within two months and died within six months despite chemotherapy.

A retrospective study was carried out on 20 patients with transitional cell ureteral tumours (TCUT). Surgical exploration of the tumour was performed in 17 patients. Biopsies for frozen section were evaluated for decision concerning the extent of operative intervention. If radical excision of the tumour could be done, and if the ureteral defect could be bridged, a conservative procedure was chosen. BACKGROUND: Borderline paratubal cysts are rare entities. These tumors are identified as epithelial proliferation without stromal invasion.
CASE: A 19-year-old virgin patient was admitted to our clinic with abdominal pain and nausea. The sonographic evaluation showed a left adnexal mass 89 × 80 mm in diameter with solid tissue projections. Doppler examination revealed no significant blood supply. At surgery, a torsed left paratubal cyst 10 cm in diameter and normal bilateral ovaries were encountered. Cystectomy was performed and of frozen section revealed a borderline Fallopian tube neoplasm.

Adenomas of the ampulla of Vater are rare tumors which cause the same diagnostic problems as adenomas of the colon and rectum. From 1984 to 1991 we treated 5 patients with adenomas of the ampulla of Vater verified by endoscopy and biopsy. All 5 patients underwent transduodenal papillectomy and reimplantation of the common bile duct and pancreatic duct with intraoperative frozen section examination of the specimen. Two of 14 patients with adenomas were without disease 25 and 43 months after ampullary resection. Two patients with an initial diagnosis of malignant neoplasm had no recurrence at 75 and 40 months; one underwent pancreatoduodenectomy at 8 months because of recurrence. Six of nine patients with initial diagnoses of villous adenoma were without disease at 1, 2, 16, 23, 46, and 51 months; three underwent conversion to pancreatoduodenectomy because of invasive carcinoma. Frozen-section studies revealed adenocarcinoma in two patients with villous adenoma but failed to show invasion in one patient.

Immunohistochemical detection of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) has been suggested as a new approach for determining proliferative activity in paraffin-embedded tissue. In a prospective study PCNA immunostaining was performed in 284 colorectal biopsies using monoclonal antibodies 19F4 (Ogata et al. 1987) and PC10 (Waseem and Lane 1990) and compared with the Ki67 method. We have studied 14 hematopoietic malignancies with histologic features of histiocytic differentiation, using frozen section immunologic stains, plastic section enzyme histochemistry, and paraffin section immunocytochemistry.
