INTRODUCTION: Hydronephrosis is a common disease in children and may be caused by ureteral fibroepithelial polyps (UFP). Ureteral fibroepithelial polyps are rare in children and are difficult to precisely diagnose before surgery. Surgical treatment for symptomatic UFP is recommended. At the present institution, retroperitoneal laparoscopy has been used to treat five boys with UFP since 2006.

Purpose. It was to quantify the intraobserver and interobserver variability of the sonographic measurements of renal pelvis and classify hydronephrosis severity. Methods. Two ultrasonographers evaluated 17 fetuses from 23 to 39 weeks of gestation. Renal pelvis APD were taken in 50 renal units. The urine concentration of IL-6, IL-8 and nitric oxide (NO) were determined in the patients with pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis. Correlations between urine levels of IL-6 and IL-8 and amount of nitric oxide in the hydronephrosis patients were not found. Reviewing 8 cases, the author describes the technique and gives the results from surgical treatment of certain types of hydronephrosis involving a transposition of the lower pole vascular pedicle into the anterior side of the pelvis, preventing thus the former from compressing the pyeloureteral junction. The author underlines the difficulty residing in the proper selection of the surgical indications. Success depends upon the quality of such indications. This method characteristically combines simplicity and reliability.

Nine cases of unilateral renal tuberculosis (functionless) with the concomitant opposite side calculus of the upper urinary tract and hydronephrosis were analysed. We first removed urinary tract obstruction from the side of calculi, and then perform resection of renal tuberculosis within two weeks as soon as possible. Two cases of giant hydronephrosis of a solitary kidney are reported. In both of them correctly performed pyelo-ureteroplasties had not assured satisfactory emptying of the pyelocalyceal system. Its dilatation and infection had not disappeared. In order to liquidate the nephrostomy, the ureters were replaced by a sigmoidal loop (calyco-sigmoido-cystostomy) with favorable results assessed 24 and 19 months after operation. The use of an isolated sigmoid segment for replacement of the ureter is discussed.
