Public health strategies for prevention and control of HSV-2 in persons who use drugs in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) affects HIV acquisition, transmission, and disease progression. Effective medications for genital herpes and for HIV/AIDS exist. Parenteral transmission of HIV among persons who inject drugs is decreasing. Reducing sexual transmission of HIV and HSV-2 among persons who use drugs (PWUD; i.e., heroin, cocaine, "speedball", crack, methamphetamine through injection or non-injection) necessitates relevant services. METHODS: We reviewed HSV-2 sero-epidemiology and HSV-2/HIV associations in U.S.-based studies with PWUD and the general literature on HSV

Literacy legislation in practice: implementation, impact, and emerging lessons.

In the past decade, states across the United States have enacted an unprecedented number of literacy laws, many of which have been spurred by growing awareness of dyslexia and calls to align instruction with the science of reading. These laws have reshaped policies on screening, curriculum adoption, educator preparation, and intervention. This Special Issue of Annals of Dyslexia contains eleven articles that collectively examine how literacy laws are being implemented, the opportunities and challenges they present, and their consequences for educators and students. Contributions include high-l

New uses for an old technique: live imaging on the slice organ culture to study reproductive processes†.

Reproductive processes are dynamic and involve extensive morphological remodeling and cell-cell interactions. Live imaging of organs enhances our understanding of how biological processes occur in real time. Slice culture is a type of organ culture where thick slices are collected from an organ and cultured for several days. Slice culture is a useful and easy-to-implement technique for live imaging of reproductive events at cellular resolution. Here we describe a pipeline of live imaging on slice culture to visualize the process of urethra closure in mouse embryonic penis as a proof of princip

Smooth implementation of critical congenital heart defect screening in a newborn nursery.

In January of 2012, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences began implementation of a critical congenital heart disease screening program to identify newborns with structural heart defects. The screening used motion tolerant pulse oximeters in direct sequence to measure the oxygen levels in the right hand and either foot of eligible newborns. Exclusion criteria included echocardiogram prior to discharge, age greater than 7 days with continuous neonatal intensive care unit monitoring, or death or transfer prior to discharge. Of the 1905 infants screened, 3 infants failed screening. Two of t

Contextualizing key principles to promote a justice-oriented informatics research agenda: proceedings and reflections from an American Medical Informatics Association workshop.

OBJECTIVES: Advancing health through informatics requires attending to justice. Recent policy changes in the United States have introduced significant barriers to promoting justice within informatics due to targeted funding cuts and hostility to science, especially science that prioritizes justice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present five key principles for advancing a justice-oriented informatics agenda, synthesized from our workshop held at the American Medical Informatics Association 2022 Annual Symposium. RESULTS: These principles are: (1) Recognize knowledge and methodologies across commu

Establishing a research informatics program in a public healthcare system: a case report with model documents.

While much is known about governance models for research informatics programs in academic medical centers and similarly situated cancer centers, community and public health systems have been less well-characterized. As part of implementing an enterprise research governance framework, leaders in the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services established a research informatics program, including research data warehousing. The strategy is focused on high-priority, patient-centered research that leverages the investment in health IT and an efficient, sustained contribution from 2 affiliated

How much habituation is enough? An R application for ad hoc content-related limits of acceptance in behavioral research.

Evaluating test-retest reliability is of crucial importance for clinical decision-making and an integral component of studies in empirical sciences. In psychology, classical test theory focused on reliability coefficients, but research has shown that intraclass correlation coefficients and Cronbach's alpha have limited value in quantifying individual measurement error sources appropriately. Preliminary assumptions such as parallel readings and independency of error sources are violated by practice/habituation effects, i.e., test-retest systematic errors. Although awareness of the need for addi

Towards a Health Data Knowledge Graph.

Semantic interoperability gaps persist despite standards such as HL7 FHIR, and SNOMED CT. Using a design science approach, our research investigates how a language for the formal specification of semantics can be developed, based on the principles of the ABC4HEDA (Archetype-based Computing for Health Data) model and structured according to the Meta-Object Facility (MOF) standard. The intended contribution is a conceptual basis that may support future work toward more semantically unified medical knowledge graphs. Future work will focus on implementation within the TermX platform to support dis

From body shaping to character formation: international research progress and mechanisms of exercise training interventions for juvenile delinquency.

Juvenile delinquency is a global public health concern requiring effective prevention strategies. This narrative review summarizes and synthesizes international evidence on structured exercise and sport-based interventions for juvenile delinquency, examining theoretical frameworks, mechanisms, program characteristics, and effectiveness. We conducted a literature search in PubMed and Web of Science; evidence indicates that intervention effectiveness depends critically on program design and implementation quality-long-term structured programs with trained coaches produce the most robust effects.

The 100 most-cited articles on bibliotherapy: a bibliometric analysis.

Bibliotherapy is an important part of art therapy and many publications regarding bibliotherapy have been published in the past. However, there has none about the scientometric study to systematically analyze the development and emerging research trends on bibliotherapy. Therefore, we performed a scientometric investigation to describe trends of this theme. All publications related to bibliotherapy published from 1980 to 2020 were identified and selected from Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index of Web of Science Core Collection.

Learning about Vaccines in Middle School Using Socioscientific Issue Problem Based Learning Modules.

This NIH-funded pilot study took place in spring 2021 to evaluate socioscientific issues (SSI) problem-based learning (PBL) modules to engage middle school students in ill-structured problems in science and health modules as a scientific literacy teachable moment. Data included questionnaires, Zoom interviews, and other correspondence. This pilot case study investigated how two teachers integrated a Covid-19 related SSI into their middle school classrooms, support needed, and their perceptions about the nature of science using a qualitative, multiple case study design. Both teachers chose the

Air quality monitoring and measurement in an urban airshed: Contextualizing datasets from the Detroit Michigan area from 1952 to 2020.

With urban air quality being a pressing public health concern, community members are becoming increasingly engaged in determining the links between air quality and human health. Although new measurement tools such as low-cost sensors make local data more accessible, a better understanding of gaps in regional datasets is needed to develop effective metropolitan-scale solutions. Using scoping review methodology, we compiled 214 published journal articles and grey literature reports of air quality data from the Detroit, Michigan area from 1952 through 2020. This critical scoping review focuses on

Machine Learning to Detect Vocal Stereotypy: Improving Duration-Based Measures.

Direct observation is a process central to behavior science, but its implementation may be challenging in some contexts (e.g., classrooms, homes). One potential solution to improve the feasibility of conducting behavioral observation and measurement involves machine learning. Using previously published data, we developed and tested novel models to automatically measure the duration of vocal stereotypy in eight children with autism. In addition to accuracy and the kappa statistic, we examined session-by-session correlations between values measured by machine learning and those recorded by a hum
