Risk of early language deprivation among deaf bilinguals with early signing experience: Evidence from American Sign Language basic word order and bilingual proficiency.

This study aims to examine the role of early signing input on the robust reliance on ASL basic word order by deaf adult ASL signers who are … ts for syntactic development are not limited to severe deprivation but can also manifest when early language is insufficient. Early, rich, and consistent language input during early childhood is required for syntactic development.

Benchmarking publicly accessible large language models for English-language patient-facing acute pancreatitis information: a cross-sectional study of quality, transparency, and readability.

BACKGROUND: Patients increasingly rely on large language models (LLMs) for health information, yet their suitability for decision-critical conditions such as acute pancreatitis remains unclear. Given that acute pancreatitis requires timely symptom recognition, severity assessment, treatment decision-making, recurrence prevention, and follow-up management, LLM-generated information should demonstrate reliability, transparency, and readability. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the informational quality, visible transparency-related features, and readability of English-language responses generated by fiv…

Language switching and speaking a nondominant language challenge executive control: Preliminary data for novel behavioral markers of Alzheimer's risk in Spanish-English bilinguals.

OBJECTIVE: The present study explored psycholinguistic analysis of spoken responses produced in a structured interview and cued linguistic and nonlinguistic task switching as possible novel markers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk in Spanish-English bilinguals. METHOD: Nineteen Spanish-English bilinguals completed an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) in both languages, cued-switching tasks, and a battery of traditional neuropsychological tests (in a separate testing session). All were cognitively healthy at the time of testing, but eight decliners were later diagnosed with AD (on average 4.5 y…

Disruptions in modular structure and network integration of language-related network predict language performance in temporal lobe epilepsy: Evidence from graph-based analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a network disorder that alters the total organization of the language-related network. Task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) aimed at functional connectivity is a direct method to investigate how the network is reorganized. However, such studies are scarce and represented mostly by the resting-state analysis of the individual connections between regions. To fill this gap, we used a graph-based analysis, which allows us to cover the total language-related network changes, such as disruptions in an integration/segregation balance, duri…

Impact of Differing Language Background Exposures on Bayley-III Language Assessment in a National Cohort of Children Born Less than 29 Weeks' Gestation.

Preterm infants are at risk for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, especially language delay. Preterm infants < 29 weeks’ gestational age, cared for in Canadian Neonatal Follow-Up Network affiliated hospitals, were assessed between 18 to 21 months corrected age using the Bayley-III. Bayley-III Language Composite Scores were compared using univariate and multivariate analyses for children in three primary language groups: English, French and other. 6146 children were included. The primary language at home was English, French or another language for 3708 children (60%), 1312 children (21%) and…

Sedation and topical anesthetics in audiology and speech-language pathology. Ad Hoc Committee on Advances in Clinical Practice. American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Audiologists and speech-language pathologists who participate in or perform procedures on patients who have been medicated for sedation or topical anesthesia should appreciate the complex factors which may expose their patients to risk or harm. Administration of medications to achieve a desired patient state is a medical procedure requiring physician or dentist prescription, physician or dentist approval on the conditions of administration and monitoring, and physician or dentist availability for provision of emergency care that may be required. For these reasons, audiologists and speech-langu…

Assessing child development scores among minority and Indigenous language versus dominant language speakers: a cross-sectional analysis of national Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have highlighted the inequities minority and Indigenous children face when accessing health care. Health and wellbeing are positively impacted when Indigenous children are educated and receive care in their maternal language. However, less is known about the association between minority or Indigenous language use and child development risks and outcomes. In this study, we provide global estimates of development risks and assess the associations between minority or Indigenous language status and early child development using the ten-item Early Child Development Inde…

A Prospective Observational Cohort Study of Language Preference and Preoperative Cognitive Screening in Older Adults: Do Language Disparities Exist in Cognitive Screening and Does the Association Between Test Results and Postoperative Delirium Differ Based on Language Preference?

BACKGROUND: A greater percentage of surgical procedures are being performed each year on patients 65 years of age or older. Concurrently, a growing proportion of patients in English-speaking countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada have a language other than English (LOE) preference. We aimed to measure whether patients with LOE underwent cognitive screening at the same rates as their English-speaking counterparts when routine screening was instituted. We also aimed to measure the association between preoperative Mini-Cog and postoperative delirium (POD) in bo…

Language extinction and diversification: The two sides of the same coin.

BACKGROUND: Language extinction is conventionally treated as a conservation crisis to be arrested, and language diversification as a historical explanandum to be reconstructed. The two phenomena are studied separately, by different communities, with different methods. THESIS: This separation is theoretically incoherent. Extinction and diversification are reciprocal outcomes of a single evolutionary dynamic operating on four nested scales of linguistic organisation. Whether a given dynamic is labelled "extinction" or "diversification" depends on the observer's reference frame, not on the mecha…

The weight of words: Applying concreteness to elite media language.

This study introduces lexical "concreteness" - a psycholinguistic measure of vivid language - as a scalable tool for political and news text analysis. Using a dictionary of approximately 40,000 English word lemmas rated for concreteness, this construct is applied to more than two million New York Times articles published between 2000 and 2025. Exploratory analyses show that average concreteness declines over time in headlines and abstracts and varies systematically across material categories, document formats, print page placement, and article length. Descriptive formats, including news report…

Responsible use of large language models in gastroenterology and hepatology.

Large language models (LLMs) and related generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems are rapidly entering clinical workflows, including in gastroenterology and hepatology, where text-heavy documentation, guideline-driven care, and high-volume patient messaging create a strong demand for decision support and automation. Deployment raises distinctive risks: hallucinations and unsafe recommendations, automation bias, privacy and confidentiality threats, inequitable care, intellectual property and licensing uncertainty, and unclear allocation of responsibility across clinicians, institutions, …

An audiovisual dataset for emotion recognition (UTeMo) in Spanish language.

Emotion recognition has had remarkable growth in human-computer communication because emotions play an important role in the daily lives of human beings. This task is challenging because emotions are bodily reactions to external stimuli that differ greatly between people. Societies tend to normalize the response to these stimuli depending on their culture and era. In the literature, there are databases designed for the recognition of emotions in various languages, principally English. Although it is possible to find databases in Spanish within this compendium, none of them are specialized in t…

Errors in the Spontaneous Language of Survivors of Pediatric Cerebellar Tumors.

Pediatric cerebellar tumor survivors may present with spontaneous language impairments following treatment, but the nature of these impairments is still largely unclear. A recent study by Svaldi et al. (Cerebellum. 23:523-44, 2023) found a broad spectrum of spontaneous language impairments irrespective of postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome (pCMS) diagnosis in long-term pediatric cerebellar tumor survivors. Several patients presented with reduced grammatical or lexical accuracy, but a detailed error analysis was lacking. The present study builds on this study by 1) investigating the error…
