Our aim was to analyse the complications associated with intramedullary stabilisation of the bone fractures which are a common complication of osteogenesis imperfecta. A total of 12 fractures among six individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta were treated by intramedullary stabilisation. The mean age of the patients (three male and three female) was 19.4 years, range 7-42 years. The most common fracture site was the femoral midshaft (seven fractures). OBJECTIVE: To study the application of distraction osteogenesis (DO) of the mandibular ramus in hemifacial microsomia.
METHODS: From 1999 to 2006, 15 patients with hemifacial microsomia were treated with DO of the ramus, including 12 cases of children and juveniles, 3 cases of grown-ups. BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta is an inherited disease where the basic pathology is of defective collagen. It is a rare disorder with a reported incidence of 1/25000-1/30000. Four variants are recognized clinically, of which type II is the most severe form. Clinically the hall marks of the disease are multiple fractures and osteopenia.

Distraction is still evolving in the management of patients with orthopedic and craniomaxillofacial deformities. The relationship among latency, gap size, rate, rhythm, and duration of fixation is not totally understood for all of the individual patients and variations in their needs seen in a clinical practice. Numerous factors can influence the quality and quantity of bone seen with distraction, including the age and nutritional status of the patient and the type of distractor that is used.

INTRODUCTION: Current regimens of intravenous pamidronate for infants and children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) typically deliver 3-12 mg/kg/year of drug. We wished to ascertain the effect of pamidronate at 6 or 12 mg/kg/year on skeletal health in infants with OI.
