BACKGROUND: Thyroid carcinoma and benign thyroid disease associated with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) have been well described. With the developing trend toward minimally invasive parathyroidectomy without intra-operative thyroid gland palpation, thyroid pathology may be missed. The authors consider it timely to revisit the issue of thyroid pathology found at neck exploration for PHPT.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all cases of neck exploration for PHPT between 1993 and 1998 at Liverpool Hospital was undertaken.
RESULTS: There were 65 patients in the study group (44 women, 21 men;…

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans' cell histiocytosis that may present with pulmonary symptoms. The condition seems to be nonfamilial and typically affects middle-aged adults. Radiographic and pathologic changes in the long bones are diagnostic, but patients often present with extraskeletal manifestations. Advanced pulmonary lesions are associated with extensive fibrosis that may lead to cardiorespiratory failure. The clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of six patients with ECD with lung involvement are presented. The patients were three men and three women (mean

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the property of pigment granules in the hepatocytes in patients with Dubin-Johnson syndrome.
METHOD: Light microscopy, histochemical, immnohistochemical and electron microscopy techniques were used to study the pigment glanules and the expression of S-100 protein and HMB45 in hepatocytes.
RESULTS: Histological examination revealed normal lobular architecture and the abundont brown pigments which were chiefly seen in the centrilobular zone hepatocytes. The pigment granules were evidenced to have the characterization of both lipofuscin and melanin by histochemical sta

Vascular pathology in the upper extremity of a throwing athlete comprises a spectrum of serious disorders apt to threaten the patient's career and the viability of the involved parts. Such pathology includes digital vessel thrombosis, proximal thrombosis with distal embolization, vessel aneurysm, and vessel compression, such as in thoracic outlet syndrome and quadrilateral space syndrome. This article provides a description of vascular disorders prone to result from sports activities and a review of published data relevant to throwing athletes. Recognition of vascular compromise as a cause for…

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is a novel prion disease in man which was first described in 1996 in the UK. There is substantial evidence to indicate that vCJD represents the effects of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent in man. The neuropathology of vCJD is characterised by the florid plaque, composed of a central amyloid core with a fibrillary periphery, surrounded by a rim of spongiform change in an intact neuropil. Unique patterns of PrP accumulation in vCJD are revealed by immunocytochemistry in the cerebral and cerebellar cortices, the basal ganglia, thalamus and …

Diagnostic sampling and interpretation in the ferret are similar to other small mammals in many ways. There are several aspects of clinical pathology and diagnostic procedures, however, that are unique to the ferret. This article is designed to assist the clinician in obtaining and interpreting diagnostic samples for the ferret. Methods for blood and urine collection, bone marrow and organ aspirations, and organ biopsy techniques are discussed.

Considerable progress has been made in our knowledge of desmosomes and their components. Molecular cloning of the desmosomal glycoproteins has established that desmoglein 1 and desmoglein 3 are targets for autoantibodies in the blistering diseases pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris respectively. New evidence suggests that another desmosomal glycoprotein, desmocollin 1, is the major target antigen in the upper epidermal form of intercellular IgA dermatosis. In human cancer there is accumulating evidence which suggests a role for desmosomes in the prevention of the invasion and metastasi

Vibroacoustic disease (VAD) is the clinical manifestation of a systemic disease that develops after long-term exposure to noise (> or = 10 yr) which is characterized by large pressure amplitude (> or = 90 dB SPL) within the lower frequency bands (< or = 500 Hz). Noisy environments produce more widespread systemic effects than initially suspected. This paper describes the chronology, population studied, and the statistical treatment used in our studies of VAD over the past 20 yr. We also describe the motivation that led to the evaluation and assessment of the exposed employees. Future research

Morphologic changes in massive obesity in both humans and experiment animals are rather limited. Glomerulomegaly is common and often asymptomatic. Frequently, ensuing focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis may well be related to alterations in intraglomerular hemodynamics and may result in heavy proteinuria. Factors for the occurrence of segmental glomerulosclerosis have been assessed in animal models and include the influence of lipids. A consequence of surgical therapy for obesity (ie, jejunoileal bypass) is oxalosis with chronic interstitial nephritis, and this may necessitate a takedown of

Hemophilia is an X chromosome linked disease characterized by an increased tendency to hemorrhage. Due to recurrent haemarthroses specific changes occur in synovium and cartilage. This process is called haemophilic arthropathy. The pathogenetic mechanisms involved are not precisely known. Current concepts, which are based on experimental in vitro studies and clinical experience, hold that the synovium becomes catabolically active because of the exposure to blood components and as a result induces cartilage destruction. A considerable amount of reports concerning blood induced joint damage sugg

BACKGROUND: The hippocampal lesions in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) have been reported to be characteristically mild, but it has not been well known how the lesions change pathologically from the entorhinal cortex to the hippocampus.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was designed to clarify the ambiguity attending the parahippocampal lesions in CJD. Fourteen cases with pathologically diagnosed CJD were studied. They were classified into 2 groups: group I, which did not have cortical status spongiosus (SS) and included 5 cases; and group II, which had cortical SS and included 9 cases. Neuron

Neuroaxonal pathology has met little attention in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. In brains of a series of 39 consecutive Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) cases, we detected numerous abnormal neurites that labeled for neurofilament proteins (NFP) by immunocytochemistry. Three types of abnormally NFP-accumulating structures were more prominently observed in CJD brains than in age-matched control brains: 1. Neurons with NFP in their somata were seen in 29 CJD cases (74%), some appearing distended with eccentrically placed nuclei and homogenously stained cytoplasm. 2. Neuritic distensio…

Basing on the own material of 328 patients treated surgically the authors have presented the problem of submandibular space pathology. They have pointed out its interspecialty in diagnosing and treatment. Among 328 patients the presence of inflammatory tumors have been stated in 220 (67.1%) cases, non-specific inflammation in 194 (88.2%) patients and specific inflammation in 26 (11.8%) patients. Neoplasmatic tumors have occurred in 98 (29.9%) patients, malignant tumors in 78 (79.6%) patients and benign ones in 20 (20.4%) patients. Among malignant tumors metastatic ones were observed in 41 (52.…

Abundant tau-positive neurofibrillary lesions constitute a defining neuropathological characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. Filamentous tau pathology is also central to a number of other dementing disorders, such as Pick's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration and familial frontotemporal dementia and Parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17). The discovery of mutations in the tau gene in FTDP-17 has firmly established the relevance of tau pathology for the neurodegenerative process. Experimental studies have provided a system for the assembly of full-length t…

Farmers are usually exposed to a wide variety of noxious organic or chemical substances. This explains why agriculture is probably one of the occupations where prevalences of respiratory diseases are the highest. Some diseases such as extrinsic allergic alveolitis, allergic asthma, silo filler's disease or pesticides-related fibrosis are classic and well described. Others, more recently identified although probably more frequent, remain often unrecognized. This is notably the case of agricultural chronic bronchitis and of organic dust toxic syndrome. Sometimes, these respiratory pathologies ar
