BACKGROUND: α-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is a melanocortin peptide that increases skin pigmentation during ultraviolet light-mediated tanning. As α-MSH has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory effects, we assessed the clinical potential of a superpotent α-MSH analogue, afamelanotide (Nle(4)-D-Phe(7)-α-MSH), in patients with acne vulgaris, the most common inflammatory skin disorder.

BACKGROUND: The present work aimed to study the changes of both norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DbetaH) in pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH).
METHODS: NE levels and DbetaH activity in blood were determined in 116 patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension and 40 normal control subjects using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometry. Among patients with PIH, 28 were graded as mild, 34 moderate and 54 severe. The normal control subjects were selected from patients at a normal term pregnancy receiving elective cesarean section.

This report discusses characteristics of a custom-designed vidicon spectrometer and evaluates its applicability to several clinical analysis problems. Data show that the vidicon detector response is linear with intensity over about four orders of magnitude and that the uncertainty in absorbance measurements can approach 0.001 absorbance units in the range from 0 to 2 absorbance units.
