Theta-burst stimulation over primary somatosensory cortex modulates tactile acuity of tongue.

BACKGROUND: Emerging studies in humans have established the modulatory effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over primary somatosensory cortex (S1) on somatosensory cortex activity and perception. However, to date, research in this area has primarily focused on the hand and fingers, leaving a gap in our understanding of the modulatory effects of rTMS on somatosensory perception of the orofacial system and speech articulators. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to examine the effects of different types of theta-burst stimulation-continuous TBS (cTBS), intermittent TBS

Sleep Deprivation in Healthy Males Increases Muscle Afferents, Impairing Motor Preparation and Reducing Endurance.

PURPOSE: Sleep deprivation (SD) reduces time to task failure during endurance exercises. The aim of our work was to study the effect of acute SD on the endurance of a skeletal hand muscle and to investigate cortical motor drive to muscle and perception of effort. METHODS: Origin of the early exhaustion after SD might be insufficient cortical motor drive to muscle or motor inhibition because of excessive perception of effort. The supplementary motor area, the medial part of the premotor cortex, links the motor and sensory cortexes, prepares for voluntary movements, and may play a central role

Verbal Fluency in Prelingually Deaf, Early Implanted Children and Adolescents With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: Verbal fluency tasks assess the ability to quickly and efficiently retrieve words from the mental lexicon by requiring subjects to rapidly generate words within a phonological or semantic category. This study investigated differences between cochlear implant users and normal-hearing peers in the clustering and time course of word retrieval during phonological and semantic verbal fluency tasks. METHOD: Twenty-eight children and adolescents (aged 9-17 years) with cochlear implants and 33 normal-hearing peers completed measures of verbal fluency, nonverbal intelligence, speech perceptio

Audiological Outcomes and Associated Factors after Pediatric Cochlear Reimplantation.

Cochlear implants are the most common and successful sensory neuroprosthetic devices. However, reimplantation can be required for medical reasons, device failure, or technological upgrading. Resolving the problem driving the intervention and offering stable or better audiological results are the main challenges. We aimed to analyze the success rate of this intervention and to identify factors influencing speech perception recovery after reimplantation in the pediatric population. We retrospectively collected the causes and the outcomes of 67 consecutive reimplantations in one cochlear implant

Outbreak of postoperative endophthalmitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa: a case report and brief literature review.

Endophthalmitis is the most serious complication of cataract surgery. A cluster of endophthalmitis is a devastating event for surgeons. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the main causative pathogen of Gram-negative endophthalmitis, which can be suggestive of the occurrence of an outbreak.Ten patients diagnosed with endophthalmitis after cataract surgery performed by one surgeon were analyzed in this study. At presentation, five patients had obvious clinical findings of endophthalmitis with visual acuity of light perception, two patients had poor light perception/no light perception of vision complicat

Perceptual pitch deficits coexist with pitch production difficulties in music but not Mandarin speech.

Congenital amusia is a musical disorder that mainly affects pitch perception. Among Mandarin speakers, some amusics also have difficulties in processing lexical tones (tone agnosics). To examine to what extent these perceptual deficits may be related to pitch production impairments in music and Mandarin speech, eight amusics, eight tone agnosics, and 12 age- and IQ-matched normal native Mandarin speakers were asked to imitate music note sequences and Mandarin words of comparable lengths. The results indicated that both the amusics and tone agnosics underperformed the controls on musical pitch

High-concentration tetracaine for the management of trigeminal neuralgia: quantitative assessment of sensory function after peripheral nerve block.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of peripheral nerve block with high-concentration tetracaine for the management of trigeminal neuralgia, and evaluated sensory function by measuring the postblock current perception threshold. METHODS: Five infraorbital nerve blocks were performed in five elderly patients using 4% tetracaine dissolved in saline or 0.5% bupivacaine. The authors used a neurometer to compare postblock current perception threshold between the block side and the contralateral healthy side, and used cold tests to assess the sensory level. RESULTS: The analgesic effect of

Cerebellar Direct Current Stimulation Reveals the Causal Role of the Cerebellum in Temporal Prediction.

Temporal prediction (TP) influences our perception and cognition. The cerebellum could mediate this multi-level ability in a context-dependent manner. We tested whether a modulation of the cerebellar neural activity, induced by transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), changed the TP ability according to the temporal features of the context and the duration of target interval. Fifteen healthy participants received anodal, cathodal, and sham tDCS (15 min × 2 mA intensity) over the right cerebellar hemisphere during a TP task. We recorded reaction times (RTs) to a target during the task in

Electrophysiological investigation of reward anticipation and outcome evaluation during slot machine play.

Slot machines are a popular form of gambling, offering a tractable way to experimentally model reward processes. This study used a 3-reel slot paradigm to assess psychologically distinct phases of reward processing, reflecting anticipation, and early- and late-stage outcome processing. EEG measures of winning, nearly missing (a losing outcome revealed at the final, third reel), and "totally" missing (a losing outcome revealed earlier, at the second reel) were collected from healthy adults (n=54). Condition effects were evaluated in: i) event-related potential (ERP) components reflecting antici

Hyperbolic discounting: value and time processes of substance abusers and non-clinical individuals in intertemporal choice.

The single parameter hyperbolic model has been frequently used to describe value discounting as a function of time and to differentiate substance abusers and non-clinical participants with the model's parameter k. However, k says little about the mechanisms underlying the observed differences. The present study evaluates several alternative models with the purpose of identifying whether group differences stem from differences in subjective valuation, and/or time perceptions. Using three two-parameter models, plus secondary data analyses of 14 studies with 471 indifference point curves, results…

Behavioral Assessment of Zwicker Tone Percepts in Gerbils.

The Zwicker tone illusion - an auditory phantom percept after hearing a notched noise stimulus - can serve as an interesting model for acute tinnitus. Recent mechanistic models suggest that the underlying neural mechanisms of both percepts are similar. To date it is not clear if animals do perceive the Zwicker tone, as up to now no behavioral paradigms are available to objectively assess the presence of this phantom percept. Here we introduce, for the first time, a modified version of the gap pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex (GPIAS) paradigm to test if it is possible to indu

Comparative Motor Outcomes and Programming Timelines After Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's Disease With Abbott Infinity™ Versus Medtronic Percept™ Systems.

Introduction Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established therapy for the management of advanced Parkinson's disease, contributing to improvements in motor symptoms and quality of life. Medtronic Percept™ (Medtronic plc, Galway, Ireland) and Abbott Infinity™ (Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, Illinois, United States) DBS systems are both widely used by clinicians yet lack real-world head-to-head comparisons of postoperative outcomes. This study evaluated motor outcomes, dopamine challenge responsiveness, cognitive baseline measures, and time to initial programming of patients implanted with

Factors influencing decision-making in relation to timing of gastrostomy insertion in patients with motor neurone disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the decision-making process leading up to gastrostomy insertion from the perspective of the patients and their informal carers. Gastrostomy feeding is commonly used to support motor neurone disease patients with dysphagia. However, there is no robust evidence to suggest the optimal timing for gastrostomy insertion. METHODS: Retrospective qualitative exploration using semistructured interviews with paired patients and carers in order to elicit their perceptions in relation to gastrostomy timing. RESULTS: 27 patients consented to the study; of these, 23

Contributions of pitch and bandwidth to sound-induced enhancement of visual cortex excitability in humans.

Multisensory interactions have been documented within low-level, even primary, cortices and at early post-stimulus latencies. These effects are in turn linked to behavioral and perceptual modulations. In humans, visual cortex excitability, as measured by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) induced phosphenes, can be reliably enhanced by the co-presentation of sounds. This enhancement occurs at pre-perceptual stages and is selective for different types of complex sounds. However, the source(s) of auditory inputs effectuating these excitability changes in primary visual cortex remain dispute

Grasping what is graspable: evidence from visual form agnosia.

Patient DF has profound visual form agnosia. Despite this, she has no problem adjusting her finger-thumb grip aperture to the width of objects when reaching to grasp them. In a previous study, however, she was found to have great difficulty in scaling her grip aperture when attempting to grasp a transparent disc through two holes cut into it. This problem was attributed to a putative difference between the visual processing of size and distance in the brain, whereby DF retained the capacity for processing object size but not the separation between distinct elements such as holes. In the presen
