Unveiling the positive impact of biofloc culture on Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection of Pacific white shrimp by reducing quorum sensing and virulence gene expression and enhancing immunity.

This study aimed to evaluate and unveil the positive impact of biofloc culture on Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection of Pacific white shrimp by reducing quorum sensing (QS) and virulence gene expression and enhancing shrimp's immunity. The shrimp with an average body weight of 0.50 ± 0.09 g were reared in containers with a volume of 2.5 L, 21 units, and a density of 20 shrimp L-1. The shrimp were cultured for 5 days, with each treatment including biofloc system maintenance with a C/N ratio of 10 and a control treatment without biofloc, followed by a challenge test through immersion using V. par

Applied pharmacokinetics to improve pharmacotherapy in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units: focus on correct dose selection.

Drug dosing and exposure throughout childhood are constantly affected by maturational changes like weight, age or body surface area. In neonatal and paediatric intensive care units (NICU and PICU, respectively), drug dosing and exposure are further impacted by non-maturational changes. These changes are related to factors such as sepsis, cardiac failure, acute kidney injury, extracorporeal circuits or drug-drug interactions (DDIs) resulting from polypharmacy. This potentially complex situation may alter drug pharmacokinetics to result in greater-than-usual intrapatient and interpatient drug exp

Long-term muscle-specific overexpression of DOK7 in mice using AAV9-tMCK-DOK7.

Neuromuscular junction (NMJ) dysfunction underlies several diseases, including congenital myasthenic syndromes (CMSs) and motor neuron disease (MND). Molecular pathways governing NMJ stability are therefore of interest from both biological and therapeutic perspectives. Muscle-specific kinase (MuSK) is necessary for the formation and maintenance of post-synaptic elements of the NMJ, and downstream of tyrosine kinases 7 (DOK7) is crucial for activation of the MuSK pathway. Overexpression of DOK7 using AAV9 has been shown to ameliorate neuromuscular pathology in pre-clinical disease models of CMS

Dietary Alpha-Ketoglutarate Partially Abolishes Adverse Changes in the Small Intestine after Gastric Bypass Surgery in a Rat Model.

Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is one of the key metabolites that play a crucial role in cellular energy metabolism. Bariatric surgery is a life-saving procedure, but it carries many gastrointestinal side effects. The present study investigated the beneficial effects of dietary AKG on the structure, integrity, and absorption surface of the small intestine after bariatric surgery. Male 7-week-old Sprague Dowley rats underwent gastric bypass surgery, after which they received AKG, 0.2 g/kg body weight/day, administered in drinking water for 6 weeks. Changes in small intestinal morphology, including h

Interleukin-32γ in the Control of Acute Experimental Chagas Disease.

Chagas disease (CD) is an important parasitic disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Interleukin-32 (IL-32) plays an important role in inflamm … xpressed in IL-32γTg than in WT mice. The cytokine profile found in IL-32γTg animals contributed to body weight maintenance, parasitemia control, and survival. Our results indicate that the presence of human IL-32γ in mice infected with the Colombian strain of T. cruzi is important for infection control during the acute phase of Chagas disease.

Dual Effect of Curcumin-Zinc Complex in Controlling Diabetes Mellitus in Experimentally Induced Diabetic Rats.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction of curcumin from Curcuma longa was performed in an ultrasonic bath at 30°C using ethanol for 40 min. A successful attempt has been made to prepare curcumin-zinc (Zn) complex using a simple chemical procedure. The complex formation and its stoichiometry were characterized using elemental analysis, Fourier transform (FT)-IR and UV spectroscopy which revealed the interaction of Zn(II) ion (M) with curcumin (ligand, L) to proceed via (ML) complex type formation. Oral administration of curcumin-Zn complex at a concentration of 150 mg/kg body weight/rat/d for 45 d in s

A new dosing regimen for metronidazole in malnourished children.

The use of metronidazole for the treatment of intestinal parasitosis has increased markedly, particularly in developing countries, where the association of malnutrition and parasitosis is very common. Since biotransformation of metronidazole is significantly affected by severe malnutrition, and undesirable effects of the drug seem to be related to its plasma concentration, it was decided to carry out a study to establish a dosing-regimen of metronidazole in severely malnourished children. A single dose of 30 mg/kg body weight, and computer simulation of a steady-state was studied in 10 malnour

The endocannabinoid system and the treatment of obesity.

The endocannabinoids are endogenous lipids capable of binding to both cannabinoid receptors (CB) CB1 and CB2. These receptors belong to the G protein-coupled family receptors and they were discovered while investigating the mode of action of ?(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol, a component of Cannabis sativa, to which they bind with high affinity. Among many other brain sites, CB1 is present in the hypothalamic nuclei involved in the control of energy balance and body weight, as well as in neurons of the mesolimbic system which is believed to mediate the incentive value of food. At central nervous syste

A Narrative Review on the Effect of Maternal Hypothyroidism on Fetal Development.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the human body's neck region. The thyroid produces three hormones that are essential for regulating body temperature, energy production, weight, hair and nail growth, and menstrual cycle maintenance. The production of these hormones is controlled by a feedback mechanism. Various factors cause changes in the stimulation and inhibition of these hormones, which ultimately causes either excessive release or a decrease in the levels of thyroid hormones. These causes can be physiological or pathological. One of the physiological causes is pregnancy.

A randomized controlled trial protocol comparing low-calorie Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets for diabetes remission in individuals with type 2 diabetes in northern Lebanon: an intervention mapping-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing worldwide, largely due to obesity and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. Weight-loss-induced diabetes remission offers a promising approach to reducing complications and improving quality of life. Addressing this effectively requires a comprehensive approach that targets behavioral and environmental determinants and is guided by the Intervention Mapping (IM) protocol. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the protocol for a randomized controlled trial comparing two low-calorie dietary approaches for achieving diabetes remission in adults with T2

Effectiveness of Whey Protein Supplementation in Weight Loss Interventions for Patients with Obesity: A Systematic Review.

Background: Obesity is traditionally defined by excess fat mass; however, the preservation of fat-free mass (FFM), particularly skeletal muscle, has gained increasing relevance due to its metabolic, endocrine, and functional roles. Weight loss interventions, including hypocaloric diets, pharmacological treatments, and bariatric surgery, are frequently associated with unintended loss of skeletal mass, increasing the risk of sarcopenic obesity and related complications. Objective: This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of whey protein supplementation in preserving fat-free

Non-nutritive sweeteners: review and update.

Obesity has become an epidemic, not just in the United States, but also across the globe. Obesity is a result of many factors including poor dietary habits, inadequate physical activity, hormonal issues, and sedentary lifestyle, as well as many psychological issues. Direct and indirect costs associated with obesity-related morbidity and mortality have been estimated to be in the billions of dollars. Of the many avenues for treatment, dietary interventions are the most common. Numerous diets have been popularized in the media, with most being fads having little to no scientific evidence to vali
