Factors Influencing Quality of Life Among Family Caregivers Supporting Heart Failure Home Care in Rural Appalachia.

Rural caregivers of older adults with heart failure experience substantial caregiving burden and reduced quality of life. This cross-sectional study examined how caregiver characteristics, demographics, psychological variables (anxiety, depression, loneliness, spiritual well-being), and palliative care concerns predict quality of life among rural family caregivers. Conducted in rural Appalachia, the study included 68 informal caregivers providing in-home care to adults aged 50 or older with advanced heart failure. Quality of life was measured using the World Health Organization Quality of Life

Psychological job demands and preterm birth among Black women.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the role of psychological job demands on PTB among Black mothers and explored potential effect modifiers. METHODS: Within a cohort of 428 Black women employed during pregnancy, a modified version of the Karasek Job Content Questionnaire assessed the psychological demands of the prenatal work environment, comparing the top quartile vs. the lower 3 quartiles; >median vs. ≤median; and individual items (yes vs. no). Log-binomial regression models estimated associations, adjusted for confounders, and investigated effect measure modification by psychosocial factors and racism

A Narrative Review of Psychological and Physical Rehabilitation in Infertility Treatment: Toward Holistic Outcomes Beyond Conception.

Infertility is a complex health issue that extends beyond biological mechanisms, encompassing significant psychological, relational, and social aspects. Advances in assisted reproductive technologies have improved the chances of conception, yet many couples discontinue treatment due to stress, stigma, and reduced quality of life. This narrative review explores the role of rehabilitation as a complementary approach to conventional fertility care, highlighting psychological, physical, and integrated interventions. Psychological rehabilitation strategies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, min

Participation in the New Maudsley Model Workshops is Associated With Reductions in Caregiver Burden in Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Caregivers of individuals with eating disorders (ED) frequently experience psychological distress, expressed emotion, and accommodation behaviours, contributing to caregiver burden. The New Maudsley Model (NMM) is a structured intervention designed to improve caregivers' emotional regulation, communication, and coping strategies. This study examined changes in caregiver burden associated with participation in NMM workshops and explored the temporal relationship between psychological distress and ED symptom impact. METHOD: A total of 447 caregivers participated, with 189 completing

Association of Optimism, Causal Thinking, and Karma Beliefs with PTSD and Depression 8 Years After the Tsunami in Sri Lanka.

In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami struck Asia and caused high mortality, displacement, and psychological trauma in Sri Lanka. Previous studies have found that optimism protects against PTSD and depression, whereas pessimistic causal thinking and karma beliefs are associated with depression soon after a trauma. The objective of this study is to examine whether these factors continue to be associated with psychological health among Sri Lankan coastal residents 8 years after the tsunami. A semi-structured survey was conducted in 5 coastal districts. Three hundred twenty-five participants had dire

Exposure to Intimate-Partner Violence and Resilience Trajectories of Adolescents: A Two-Wave Longitudinal Latent Transition Analysis.

Despite the serious emotional and social consequences of adolescents' exposure to intimate-partner violence (IPV) and the high prevalence of this exposure, few analyses have focused on person-centered models or considered psychological IPV. Studies that address exposure to violence tend to focus on physical IPV. Therefore, in this study, we examine (across two waves) the trajectories of resilience among adolescents who have witnessed psychological IPV by conducting a latent transition analysis and predicting class membership through socio-demographic and individual-level protective factors. Remission in adolescents with bulimia nervosa: Empirical evaluation of current conceptual models.

OBJECTIVE: The few randomized clinical trials (RCTs) investigating adolescent treatment for bulimia nervosa (BN) suggest variability in both rates of, and criteria for remission. The current study examined reactivity in remission rates, relative to various conceptualizations of remission in a single RCT data set. METHOD: A data set of adolescents with BN who participated in an RCT (N = 110) was used to evaluate remission models based upon behavioral symptoms (e.g., binge eating), psychological symptoms (Eating Disorder Examination [EDE] scores), and combinations of these criteria. RESULTS: A

Mental health consequences of weight cycling in the first-year post-treatment for breast cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Weight cycling is linked with advanced breast cancer diagnosis, increased risk of cancer reoccurrence and cancer-related mortality. While women treated for breast cancer report challenges with navigating their post-treatment body shape and weight, the effects of weight cycling on body image and mental health have not been elucidated. This study examined associations between weight changes and weight cycling on psychological health (i.e. weight-related guilt, shame and depressive symptoms) among women in the first-year post-treatment. DESIGN AND OUTCOME MEASURES: Self-reported asse

Discrimination Fully Mediates the Effects of Incarceration History on Depressive Symptoms and Psychological Distress Among African American Men.

AIM: Using a nationally representative sample of African American men, this study investigated the associations between lifetime history of incarceration, discrimination, and mental health (e.g., depressive symptoms and psychological distress). We hypothesized that discrimination would fully mediate the association between incarceration history and mental health outcomes among African American men. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, our analysis included 1271 African American men who participated in the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), 2001-2003. Incarceration history was the ma

Do special occasions trigger psychological distress among older bereaved spouses? An empirical assessment of clinical wisdom.

OBJECTIVES: Mental health professionals have suggested that widowed persons experience heightened psychological distress on dates that had special meaning for them and their late spouse, such as a wedding anniversary or the late spouse's birthday. This study examined the effects of such occasions on grief, anxiety, and depressive symptoms in a community sample of older widowed persons. METHODS: OLS regression models were estimated using data from the Changing Lives of Older Couples (CLOC) study, a large prospective probability study of late-life widowhood. Participants were interviewed prior

Quality of life, course and predictors of outcomes in community women with EDNOS and common eating disorders.

We investigated the 2-year course and putative predictors of outcome of 87 young community women with common eating disorders (n = 59, 68% with Eating Disorder not Otherwise Specified) following a health literacy (informational) intervention. Participants were recruited in 3-phases: community survey, interview and then invitation to a longitudinal study. The health literacy intervention was provided randomly to half participants at baseline and half at 1 year. Eating disorder symptoms and mental health related quality of life (MHQoL), general psychological function, help-seeking, and defence s

A multilevel analysis of long-term psychological distress among Belarusians affected by the Chernobyl disaster.

BACKGROUND: Radiation contamination and sociopolitical instability following the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster have had a profound impact on Belarus. METHODS: In-person interviews were conducted with 381 men and women from two geographic areas of differing radiation contamination within Belarus. Participants completed surveys of demographics, psychosocial factors and psychological distress. Individual-level ch

Blood pressure reactivity to psychological stress predicts hypertension in the CARDIA study.

BACKGROUND: A longstanding but controversial hypothesis is that individuals who exhibit frequent, large increases in blood pressure (BP) during psychological stress are at risk for developing essential hypertension. We tested whether BP changes during psychological stress predict incident hypertension in young adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used survival analysis to predict hypertensive status during 13 years of follow-up in a sample of >4100 normotensive black and white men and women (age at entry, 18 to 30 years) enrolled in the CARDIA study. BP responses to 3 psychological challenges--col
