Modern Phacoemulsification and Intraocular Lens Implantation (Refractive Lens Exchange) Is Safe and Effective in Treating High Myopia.

Improved efficacy, predictability, and safety of modern phacoemulsification have resulted in cataract surgery being considered as a refractive procedure. Refractive lens exchange by definition is a surgery aimed at replacing the cataractous or clear crystalline lens with an intraocular lens (IOL) in cases of high ametropia. The excellent intraocular optics of this procedure provide a better visual outcome as compared with laser refractive surgery in high myopia. With advances in technology and IOL formulas, the predictability of refractive outcome after cataract surgery in high myopes has impr…

Endothelial cell study in a case of Werner's syndrome undergoing phacoemulsification and Yettrium-Aluminum-Garnet laser capsulotomy.

Werner's syndrome (WS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with multisystem manifestations of premature aging from the second decade of life. Cataract is one of the features of WS. Cataract surgery is complicated with postoperative wound dehiscence and bullous keratopathy when the surgery is done by intracapsular or conventional extracapsular method. We report the short-term result of phacoemulsification and Neodymimum Yettrium-Aluminum-Garnet laser (Nd YAG) capsulotomy in a case of WS with bilateral cataracts. Postoperatively and post capsulotomy, there was no change in the endothelial cel…

Systemic inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers as predictors of pain in sequential bilateral phacoemulsification for age-related cataract.

BACKGROUND: Second-eye cataract surgery is frequently associated with enhanced pain perception compared to first-eye procedures, yet the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study investigated whether systemic inflammatory biomarkers and oxidative stress indicators could predict and explain the differential pain experience in sequential bilateral phacoemulsification for age-related cataract. METHODS: In this prospective, single-blinded case-control study, we enrolled 80 patients with age-related cataract undergoing sequential bilateral phacoemulsificat…

Effect of capsule treatment on visual acuity and quality after phacoemulsification lens implantation in myopic patients with cataract.

BACKGROUND: Cataracts pose a significant clinical burden due to their complex pathogenesis. In recent years, an increase in cataracts coexisting with myopia has heightened the incidence of retinopathy and posterior vitreous detachment. Additionally, symptoms of ocular axis elongation, lens nucleus hardening, and vitreous liquefaction have become more prevalent. While conventional extracapsular cataract extraction is commonly employed, it often yields suboptimal visual outcomes. Subsequent advancements in cataract phacoemulsification and lens implantation surgeries have gained widespread accept…
