The engagement of temporal attention in left spatial neglect.

Previous literature showed how left spatial neglect arises from an asymmetrical distribution of spatial attention. However, it was also suggested that left spatial neglect might be partially caused or at least worsened by non-spatial attention disorders of the right-lateralized stimulus-driven attentional fronto-parietal network. Here, we psychophysically tested the efficiency of temporal attentional engagement of foveal perception through meta-contrast (Experiment 1) and "attentional" masking (Experiment 2) tasks in patients with right-hemisphere stroke with left neglect (N+), without left ne

Hierarchical motion perception as causal inference.

Since motion can only be defined relative to a reference frame, which reference frame guides perception? A century of psychophysical studies has produced conflicting evidence: retinotopic, egocentric, world-centric, or even object-centric. We introduce a hierarchical Bayesian model mapping retinal velocities to perceived velocities. Our model mirrors the structure in the world, in which visual elements move within causally connected reference frames. Friction renders velocities in these reference frames mostly stationary, formalized by an additional delta component (at zero) in the prior. Inve

Validity and reliability of the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders for Italian-speaking patients with olfactory dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: To translate and validate an Italian version of the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders (IT-QOD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective, multicentre study that involved patients with olfactory dysfunction (OD). Both cases and controls underwent administration of the IT-QOD, Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) and psychophysical evaluation of orthonasal and retronasal olfactory function. RESULTS: The IT-QOD was administered to 96 patients and 38 controls. The Cronbach's alpha exceeded 0.90, indicating satisfactory internal consistency. The test-retest reliability was found

The Influence of Stimulus Complexity on the Effectiveness of Visual Associative Learning.

Visually guided equivalence learning is a special type of associative learning, which can be evaluated using the Rutgers Acquired Equivalence Test (RAET) among other tests. RAET applies complex stimuli (faces and colored fish) between which the test subjects build associations. The complexity of these stimuli offers the test subject several clues that might ease association learning. To reduce the number of such clues, we developed an equivalence learning test (Polygon), which is structured as RAET but uses simple grayscale geometric shapes instead of faces and colored fish. In this study, we

The Effect of the Pandemic on the Care of Patients with Mental Disorders: Measure of "Compassion Fatigue" and "Burn-Out" in the Operator.

BACKGROUND: The Covid-19 Pandemic has had a significant impact on psychophysical well-being and the ability to work productively in contexts concerning people's physical and mental care. The helping professions involved have seen an increase in stress levels, a sense of helplessness, fear, pain and social isolation. They are anchored to the hope of being able to return to their normality. METHOD: In this study, 87 mental health operators were evaluated, divided into nurses, psychiatric rehabilitation technicians, educators, social workers, psychologists and doctors, working in two psychiatric

Smell loss as initial symptom of olfactory groove meningioma.

Approximately 20% of the general population suffer from olfactory dysfunction (OD). Until today, olfactory function (OF) receives less attention than other human senses despite its significance for quality of life. The main causes of OD are upper respiratory tract infections, traumatic brain injuries and sinonasal diseases. Here, we report the case of a 28-year-old woman, who started to suffer from OD during pregnancy. Smell loss was attributed to pregnancy-induced rhinitis and initiated no further examinations. Nevertheless, OD persisted post partum and undulating headache occurred 1 year lat

No Influence of Musicianship on the Effect of Contralateral Stimulation on Frequency Selectivity.

The efferent system may control the gain of the cochlea and thereby influence frequency selectivity. This effect can be assessed using contralateral stimulation (CS) applied to the ear opposite to that used to assess frequency selectivity. The effect of CS may be stronger for musicians than for nonmusicians. To assess whether this was the case, psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) were compared for 12 musicians and 12 nonmusicians. The PTCs were measured with and without a 60-dB sound pressure level (SPL) pink-noise CS, using signal frequencies of 2 and 4 kHz. The sharpness of the PTCs was quan

Perceiving facial affective ambiguity: A behavioral and neural comparison of adolescents and adults.

The current study examined perceptual differences between adults and youth in perceiving ambiguous facial expressions. We estimated individuals' internal representation for facial expressions and compared it between age groups (adolescents: N = 108, Mage = 13.04 years, 43.52% female; adults: N = 81, Mage = 31.54, 65.43% female). We found that adolescents' perceptual representation for facial emotion is broader than that of adults', such that adolescents experience more difficulty in identifying subtle configurational differences of facial expressions. At the neural level, perceptual uncertaint

How pain arises in Parkinson's disease?

In recent years, increasing attention has centred on pain in Parkinson's disease (PD). Pain in PD is heterogeneous in quality and body distribution. To clarify how the various pain types relate to PD and to propose plausible treatment strategies, in this paper we reviewed psychophysical, neurophysiological and imaging data reported in parkinsonian patients with and without pain. Most available evidence supports abnormal central nociceptive input processing that probably reflects an impairment in the lateral and medial pain pathways. Changes in central pain processing probably underlie all the

Age-related deterioration of the representation of space in human auditory cortex.

One of the principal auditory disabilities associated with older age is difficulty in locating and tracking sources of sound. This study investigated whether these difficulties are associated with deterioration in the representation of space in the auditory cortex. In psychophysical tests, half of a group of older (>60 years) adults displayed spatial acuity similar to that of young adults throughout the frontal horizontal plane. The remaining half had considerably poorer spatial acuity at the more peripheral regions of frontal space. Computational modeling of electroencephalographic responses

Physiological responses of food neophobics and food neophilics to food and non-food stimuli.

Individual differences in human food neophobia (the reluctance to try novel foods) and food neophilia (the overt willingness to try novel foods) influence the evaluation of tastes and odors, as well as the sampling of such stimuli. Past research also notes an association of food neophobia to PTC sensitivity, body weight, and cephalic phase salivary response. The present study assessed physiological reactions of food neophobics and neophilics to pictures of food and non-food stimuli. Stimuli pictures were presented in random order on a computer screen for a period of 5 min. No significant diffe

Visual attention capacity: a review of TVA-based patient studies.

Psychophysical studies have identified two distinct limitations of visual attention capacity: processing speed and apprehension span. Using a simple test, these cognitive factors can be analyzed by Bundesen's Theory of Visual Attention (TVA). The method has strong specificity and sensitivity, and measurements are highly reliable. As the method is theoretically founded, it also has high validity. TVA-based assessment has recently been used to investigate a broad range of neuropsychological and neurological conditions. We present the method, including the experimental paradigm and practical guid

Anosmia after general anaesthesia: a case report.

Although anaesthetic drugs are included among the aetiological factors of anosmia, limited reports exist of anosmia induced by general anaesthesia. We present the case of a 60-year-old female patient with a 3-month history of altered smell and taste immediately after recovery from general anaesthesia for a urological operation. The anaesthetic drugs used were fentanyl, propofol and sevoflurane. Clinical examination and a computed tomography brain scan did not reveal any pathology. Psychophysical testing showed anosmia and normal taste function. Imaging studies using single photon emission comp

The retina in Parkinson's disease.

As a more complete picture of the clinical phenotype of Parkinson's disease emerges, non-motor symptoms have become increasingly studied. Prominent among these non-motor phenomena are mood disturbance, cognitive decline and dementia, sleep disorders, hyposmia and autonomic failure. In addition, visual symptoms are common, ranging from complaints of dry eyes and reading difficulties, through to perceptual disturbances (feelings of presence and passage) and complex visual hallucinations. Such visual symptoms are a considerable cause of morbidity in Parkinson's disease and, with respect to visual

Visually-based temporal distortion in dyslexia.

In this study, we show that invisible flicker adaptation reduces the perceived duration of a subsequently viewed stimulus in control subjects, but not in dyslexics. Dyslexics, like controls, show apparent duration compression after 20Hz flicker and show normal shifts in apparent temporal frequency after adaptation. However a subgroup of the test group, scoring low on both a test of phonological skill (spoonerisms) and a test of literacy (NART), show an apparent temporal expansion after 5Hz flicker adaptation, a finding not previously seen in controls. Recent studies have linked genes conferrin

Cardiovascular stress, energy expenditure and subjective perceived ratings of fire fighters during typical fire suppression and rescue tasks.

The study determined physiological and psychophysical responses to fire fighters' typical activities. Self-reported assessment of the most demanding fire fighting/rescue tasks were collected with a questionnaire. Then 19 voluntary fire fighters performed 3 simulated fire fighting/rescue tasks in protective clothing. Heart rate (HR), blood pressure and energy expenditure were measured; the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) was assessed with the Borg scale. The questionnaires showed that carrying out victims, fire suppression and resuscitation were classified as heavy load; climbing stairs with

On the relationship between dynamic visual and auditory processing and literacy skills; results from a large primary-school study.

Three hundred and fifty randomly selected primary school children completed a psychometric and psychophysical test battery to ascertain relationships between reading ability and sensitivity to dynamic visual and auditory stimuli. The first analysis examined whether sensitivity to visual coherent motion and auditory frequency resolution differed between groups of children with different literacy and cognitive skills. For both tasks, a main effect of literacy group was found in the absence of a main effect for intelligence or an interaction between these factors. To assess the potential confound

A summary of 20 CACNA1F mutations identified in 36 families with incomplete X-linked congenital stationary night blindness, and characterization of splice variants.

Incomplete X-linked congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is a recessive, non-progressive eye disorder characterized by abnormal electroretinogram and psychophysical testing and can include impaired night vision, decreased visual acuity, myopia, nystagmus, and strabismus. Including the 20 families previously reported (Bech-Hansen et al. 1998b), we have now analyzed patients from a total of 36 families with incomplete CSNB and identified 20 different mutations in the calcium channel gene CACNA1F. Three of the mutations account for incomplete CSNB in two or more families, and a founder ef
