Sporotrichosis in patients with diabetes mellitus: A systematic review of individual participant data.

Sporotrichosis is a globally distributed subcutaneous mycosis caused by fungi of the Sporothrix complex, and is associated with worse outcomes in immunocompromised individuals, including those with diabetes mellitus. The impact of diabetes mellitus on the clinical presentation and outcomes of sporotrichosis remains poorly characterized. We conducted a systematic review of individual participant data to assess this association. Eight databases (Cochrane Library, Embase, LILACS, MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Global Index Medicus/WHO, SciELO, and Web of Science) were searched without restrictions on pu

Update on sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis is endemic in temperate and tropical regions of the world, including Australia. Although uncommon, it is frequently encountered in Northern Australia, especially in Queensland. All ages are affected, although most cases occur from occupational exposure to vegetation or soil. This article reviews the cause, diagnosis and treatment options of this fungal disease which affects the skin and is often misdiagnosed. It classically presents in gardeners, especially those handling roses.

Primary pulmonary sporotrichosis.

A case of pulmonary sporotrichosis is described with secondary involvement of the rectum which was misdiagnosed as tuberculosis for a number of years. The authors suggest that every nondiagnosed chronic cavitary disease in the lung should include appropriate tests for sporotrichosis.

Ocular adnexal sporotrichosis: Case series from a hyperendemic region in southern Brazil.

Sporotrichosis is an emerging subcutaneous disease that occurs in outbreaks in Brazil and other South American countries. Reports of extracutaneous cases caused by Sporothrix brasiliensis have been increasing in the literature. This study describes the first case series of ocular adnexal sporotrichosis in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), southern Brazil. A retrospective analysis was conducted, including cases diagnosed over a 3-year period at a specialized reference service in RS, Brazil. Ocular sporotrichosis accounted for 25 cases, with a marked increase observed during the last 2 years

Dual-Emission FRET-PCR Outperforms SYBR Green and EvaGreen for Accurate Discrimination of Primary Canine Dermatophytes: Microsporum canis, Nannizzia gypsea, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

Conventional diagnosis of dermatophytosis relies on fungal culture and microscopic examination, methods that are often time-consuming and lack sensitivity. This study aimed to develop and compare real-time PCR assays for the simultaneous detection and differentiation of three major dermatophytes in dogs: Microsporum canis, Nannizzia gypsea, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Three qPCR platforms targeting the chitin synthase 1 (CHS1) gene-SYBR Green, EvaGreen, and dual-emission fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-were evaluated. The FRET assay demonstrated the highest performance, achi

Identification of Sporothix schenckii of various mtDNA types by nested PCR assay.

We employed a nested PCR assay to detect Sporothrix schenckii DNA of 38 strains (including all the 24 mtDNA types) collected from different areas of the world, in tissue of eight mice infected with ATCC10268 strain of the fungus, and the skin biopsies of nine patients with sporotrichosis. In addition, the same procedures were used with two strains of Ceratocystis minor and isolates of 10 species of other pathogenic fungi. The outer primers SS(1) and SS(2) and inner primers SS(3) and SS(4) of the 18S rRNA gene of S. schenckii were employed. A 152 bp fragment was detected in all 38 strains of S.

Scytalidium dimidiatum causing recalcitrant subcutaneous lesions produces melanin.

Scytalidium dimidiatum is a pigmented dematiaceous coelomycete that typically causes chronic superficial skin diseases and onychomycosis, as well as deeper infections, such as subcutaneous abscesses, mycetoma, and even fungemia in immunocompromised patients. A second species, Scytalidium hyalinum, has hyaline hyphae and arthroconidia and is considered by some authors to be an albino mutant of S. dimidiatum. This study aimed to confirm the presence of melanin or melanin-like compounds (which have been previously implicated in the virulence of other fungal pathogens) in S. dimidiatum from a pati

Oral itraconazole therapy for superficial, subcutaneous, and systemic infections. A panoramic view.

The availability of the oral triazole agents itraconazole and fluconazole has revolutionized antifungal therapy. Although there are still some limitations and treatment failures, these agents have allowed for improved efficacy, increased safety, reduced morbidity, decreased mortality from systemic fungal disease, and a shift toward increased outpatient therapy for fungal infections that are not life-threatening. The treatment of superficial infections also has been enhanced by the development of effective intermittent and short-course regimens. Itraconazole exhibits broad-spectrum in vitro act

Serodiagnosis of sporotrichosis infection in cats by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using a specific antigen, SsCBF, and crude exoantigens.

The main objective of this study is to standardize an ELISA for the diagnosis of feline sporotrichosis. Sporothrix schenckii is the etiological agent of human and animal sporotrichosis. Cats may act as reservoirs for S. schenckii and can transmit the infection to humans by a bite or scratch. There are few methods for the serological diagnosis of fungal diseases in animals. In this paper, an ELISA test for the diagnosis of cat sporotrichosis is proposed, which detects S. schenckii-specific antibodies in feline sera. Two different kinds of antigens were used: "SsCBF", a specific molecule from S.

Recurrence of sporotrichosis in cats with zoonotic involvement.

The aim of this work is to describe the prevalence of the disease in the same cattery after three years, and to report a case of human sporotrichosis following a cat scratch. In May 1997, four felines presenting a cachexy state and ulcerous lesions on the head, nose and limbs were examined in a veterinary clinic in the town of Rio Grande (RS-Brazil). Exudate and crusts were collected for microbiological diagnosis. The cat's owner returned to the clinic reporting that another eleven felines presented similar lesions. She had ulcerous lesions on her hand and ascending lymphangitis. She was condu
