Click reception in the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena): Effects of electrode and contact transducer location on the auditory brainstem response.

Unlike terrestrial mammals that have unambiguous aerial sound transmission pathways via the outer ear and tympanum, sound reception pathways in most odontocetes are not well understood. Recent studies have used auditory brainstem response (ABR) measurements to examine sound reception pathways. This study sought to determine how sound source placements, recording electrode arrangements, and ABR peak analyses affect interpretations of sound reception in the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Click stimuli were delivered in air from a contact transducer ("jawphone"). Early ABR peaks (representi

The impact of sound exposure on heart rate variability in adolescent students.

Previous studies of physiological responses to music and noise showed the effect on the autonomic nervous system. The heart rate variability (HRV) has been used to assess the activation of the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems. The present study was aimed to examine HRV with exposure to four sine-wave pure tones (20 Hz, 50 Hz, 2 kHz and 15 kHz) in an environment where the sound intensity exceeded level 65 dB (A-weighted). The participants (20 adolescent girls) were lying in supine position during exposure protocol divided into 6 periods, the first time with generated sounds a

A compact representation for the auditory full-range response and its fast denoising using an image filter based on the Radon transform.

The Auditory Brainstem, Middle-Latency and Late Responses, a class of event-related potentials (ERPs), are of considerable interest in neuroscience research as robust neural correlates of different processing stages along the auditory pathway. While most research to date centers around one of the responses at a time for practical reasons, recent efforts indicate a paradigm shift towards acquiring them together, enabling the simultaneous monitoring of all auditory processing stages from the brainstem to the cortex. In this paper, we introduce a compact representation for this Auditory Full-Rang

Underwater Hearing in Turtles.

The hearing of turtles is poorly understood compared with the other reptiles. Although the mechanism of transduction of sound into a neural signal via hair cells has been described in detail, the rest of the auditory system is largely a black box. What is known is that turtles have higher hearing thresholds than other reptiles, with best frequencies around 500 Hz. They also have lower underwater hearing thresholds than those in air, owing to resonance of the middle ear cavity. Further studies demonstrated that all families of turtles and tortoises share a common middle ear cavity morphology, w

Cochlear Synaptopathy and Noise-Induced Hidden Hearing Loss.

Recent studies on animal models have shown that noise exposure that does not lead to permanent threshold shift (PTS) can cause considerable damage around the synapses between inner hair cells (IHCs) and type-I afferent auditory nerve fibers (ANFs). Disruption of these synapses not only disables the innervated ANFs but also results in the slow degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons if the synapses are not reestablished. Such a loss of ANFs should result in signal coding deficits, which are exacerbated by the bias of the damage toward synapses connecting low-spontaneous-rate (SR) ANFs, which ar

Amblyaudia: Review of Pathophysiology, Clinical Presentation, and Treatment of a New Diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Similar to amblyopia in the visual system, "amblyaudia" is a term used to describe persistent hearing difficulty experienced by individuals with a history of asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) during a critical window of brain development. Few clinical reports have described this phenomenon and its consequent effects on central auditory processing. We aim to (1) define the concept of amblyaudia and (2) review contemporary research on its pathophysiology and emerging clinical relevance. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. REVIEW METHODS: A systematic literature search

[Reading aloud as rehabilitation method for children with dyslexia detected at the first grade in their primary school].

We provided reading aloud instructions to a child who was diagnosed with dyslexia in a regular class of 69 first graders, comprising 33 boys and 36 girls, during a test of reading sentences aloud. The instructions consisted of a 2-step approach, i.e., decoding instruction and vocabulary instruction. First, a decoding instruction, which emphasized an important point in effortless decoding, was presented to the child. Next, a vocabulary instruction, which aimed to facilitate word-form recognition, was provided. We found that, the decoding instruction was effective in decreasing the number of rea

Vestibular evoked potentials.

Loud clicks, short tone bursts, head taps and short duration transmastoid currents are all capable of activating vestibular receptors and evoking reflex changes in tonic electromyogram activity within the sternocleidomastoid muscles. Because they derive from averaged electromyograms, the responses are termed 'vestibular evoked myogenic potentials'. The earliest response ipsilateral to a loud click, p13n23, is dependent upon vestibular activation, specifically saccular afferents. These new techniques are beginning to be applied clinically. An important application is in suspected cases of the T

Middle-ear function with tympanic-membrane perforations. I. Measurements and mechanisms.

Sound transmission through ears with tympanic-membrane (TM) perforations is not well understood. Here, measurements on human-cadaver ears are reported that describe sound transmission through the middle ear with experimentally produced perforations, which range from 0.5 to 5.0 mm in diameter. Three response variables were measured with acoustic stimulation at the TM: stapes velocity, middle-ear cavity sound pressure, and acoustic impedance at the TM. The stapes-velocity measurements show that perforations cause frequency-dependent losses; at low frequencies losses are largest and increase as p…

Evaluation of click evoked otoacoustic emissions in newborns: effects of time-windowing.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of time-windowing on click evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs); 466 CEOAEs from full-term babies were considered. Data were acquired according to the default ILO88 response window (2.5-20 ms). Because CEOAEs are time-varying signals, each emission was analysed by means of the wavelet transform (WT), a technique which allows a simultaneous representation of the time and frequency features of a signal. By means of the WT it was possible to extract the temporal pattern of the elementary frequency components of the compound emissions. Th

[Evaluation of a linear TEOAE protocol in hearing screening of neonates: feasibility study].

The audiological screening of newborns based on recording TEOAEs--the expression of anatomical-functional integrity of the cochlea--has unanimously gained importance. The prevalence of severe of genetic or congenital hearing loss in the healthy infant population and in the population at risk for audiological disorders, as well as the consequent psycholinguist and socialization problems such children have to deal with, have led the authors to set up a preliminary protocol for the audiological screening of neonates. The purpose of this protocol is to improve the feasibility of applying such a pr

Auditory processing and dyslexia: evidence for a specific speech processing deficit.

In order to investigate the relationship between dyslexia and central auditory processing, 19 children with spelling disability and 15 controls at grades 5 and 6 were examined using a passive oddball paradigm. Mismatch negativity (MMN) was determined for tone and speech stimuli. While there were no group differences for the tone stimuli, we found a significantly attenuated MMN in the dyslexic group for the speech stimuli. This finding leads to the conclusion that dyslexics have a specific speech processing deficit at the sensory level which could be used to identify children at risk at an earl

The effects of varying auditory input on schizophrenic hallucinations: a replication.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different types of auditory stimulation on reports of auditory hallucinations at the time of the experiment. The results showed that self-reports by seven schizophrenic patients of auditory hallucinations were reduced by different types of auditory stimulation, particularly by listening to pop music. Requiring the subject to read a passage aloud also reduced the levels reported. This study was a replication of one by Margo, Hemsley & Slade (1981) who reported similar findings.

Clinical significance of positive summating potential in Menière's disease.

The positive summating potential (+SP) in Menière's disease was compared with that in normal ears and in cochlear deafness of other origin than endolymphatic hydrops in order to assess a specificity of the +SP in Menière's disease. The +SP was recorded in 21 of 47 Menière ears (45%) on stimulation with 8-kHz tone bursts, whereas the +SP was recorded in none of 10 normal-hearing ears and in 1 of 28 ears with cochlear deafness of other origin than endolymphatic hydrops (4%). The incidence of the +SP in Meniére's disease was higher on stimulation with 8-kHz tone bursts than with 4-, 2- and 1-kHz

Visual and auditory affect recognition in senile and normal elderly persons.

Senile patients were compared to normal elderly people for visual and auditory affect recognition. The study consisted of eight conditions, with the subjects prompted verbally to point to happy, sad and angry pictures in the first five. The pictures consisted of expressive faces, expressive postures with blank faces and matching facial and postural expressions in Conditions 1-3, respectively. The facial and postural expressions conflicted in Conditions 4 and 5, with the facial expressions redundant in Condition 4 and the postures redundant in Condition 5. Conditions 6 and 7 were the same as th

Compound action potential thresholds and tuning curves in the alligator lizard.

Compound action potential (AP) thresholds and tuning curves were measured in the alligator lizard using techniques similar to those used with the mammal. For tone burst stimuli, the AP was a major component of the gross response, the electrical response to sound recorded by a wire electrode near the cochlea. The AP thresholds agreed well with threshold estimates based on single-fiber data. A forward masking paradigm produced AP tuning curves which resemble single-fiber tuning curves. A simultaneous masking paradigm produced curves which match the boundaries of single-fiber two-tone rate suppre
