C1 lateral mass reconstruction using a titanium cage following total resection of the aneurysmal bone cyst: illustrative cases and literature insights.

INTRODUCTION: There are limited reports of C1 lateral mass reconstruction using a titanium mesh cage following the surgical removal of an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). We describe two uncommon and challenging cases of C1 ABC, highlighting the obstacles and complexities involved in selecting the appropriate approach for tumor resection, C1 stabilization, and reconstruction. CASE DISCUSSION: Case 1: A 12-year-old boy presented with 3 months of progressive upper cervical and occipital pain with no history of trauma. A heterogeneous lytic lesion with fluid-fluid levels in the right lateral mass of

Atlantoaxial dislocation with associated type II odontoid fracture in adolescent with cervical spondylitis tuberculosis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Atlantoaxial dislocation is a loss of joint stability between the C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) spine and could be associated with type II odontoid fracture. In a few previous studies, atlantoaxial dislocation with odontoid fracture has been reported to be the complication of upper cervical spondylitis tuberculosis (TB). CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old girl came with sudden neck pain and difficulty moving her head that has worsened in the last 2 days. There was no motoric weakness in her limbs. However, tingling in both hands and feet was felt. X-ray examination showe

Association of Increased MIEN1 Copy Number With Worse Outcomes in Lung Adenocarcinoma and Cervical Cancer.

Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common subtype of lung cancer and a significant contributor to cancer mortality globally. This has driven the development of targeted therapies, particularly those aimed at genetic alterations in certain genes, such as EGFR and ALK. ERBB2 (HER2) has also emerged as a potential oncogenic driver and therapeutic target in lung adenocarcinoma. Notably, ERBB2 is in close proximity on chromosome 17 to GRB7 and MIEN1, which are potential contributors to invasion and metastasis. Using TCGA-LUAD (The Cancer Genome Atlas Lung Adenocarcinoma) and CPTAC-3 (Phase III of the

Sonntag procedure in Atlanto-odontoid fractures type III in restoring Atlanto-axial complex stability: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Fractures of the second cervical vertebrae (C2) and its odontoid process account for one of the most frequent cervical spine injuries that cause significant mortality and morbidity. The goal of injury treatment is to restore atlantoaxial complex stability. This article reports a young male patient aged 19 years who underwent surgical treatment due to odontoid fractures type III. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old male patient came with a chief complaint of weakness in the upper and lower extremities for 3 weeks before admission. The patient underwent a series of phy

The relationship between the degree of displacement of the atlas to axis and the clinical data in atlanto-axial subluxation due to rheumatoid arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: The most common type of anatomical cervical spine involvement is atlanto-axial subluxation (AAS) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the displacement of the atlas to axis and the clinical data obtained in patients with AAS due to RA. METHODS: Fifty patients with AAS due to RA that were treated by surgery are herein reviewed. Based on the findings of preoperative lateral cervical radiographs in the neutral position, the patients were classified into two groups as follows: a 10 + group with an atlanto-dental interval (ADI

[Diaphragmatic pacing by electrical stimulation of the phrenic nerve--a case report].

A four-year-old boy had traffic accident and was transferred to our hospital with cardiorespiratory arrest, on March 24, 1986. After resuscitation, quadriplegia and apnea were sustained. Computed tomography (CT) scan on the day of admission only demonstrated subarachnoid hemorrhage and plain roentgenograms of the skull and cervical spine showed no abnormalities. He opened his eyes to verbal order one week later, but apnea and quadriplegia sustained. CT scan obtained on that day demonstrated no abnormalities but roentgenogram of the cervical spine showed atlanto-axial dislocation. On May 26, 19

Position of the larynx in odontoceti (toothed whales).

This study examines the positional relationships of the odontocete (toothed whale) larynx to further an understanding of their breathing, swallowing, and vocalizing abilities. Seventeen specimens representing nine cetacean genera (Delphinus, Stenella, Tursiops, Grampus, Delphinapterus, Globicephala, Kogia, Mesoplodon, and Phocoena) were studied post mortem. Nine specimens were sectioned in the midsagittal plane and the position of the larynx relative to vertebral levels, skull base, and palatal structures was recorded. In eight specimens that could not be bisected for reasons of large size or

From Cervical Trauma and Head Injury to Malignant Cerebral Edema: Blunt Cerebrovascular Injury Causing Large-Vessel Occlusion Treated With Thrombectomy and Neurocritical Care.

Blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of cervical trauma that may lead to delayed ischemic stroke. Early diagnosis is often challenging because neurological symptoms may initially be absent or mild. We report a case of traumatic internal carotid artery dissection associated with cervical fracture that resulted in large-vessel occlusion and required both endovascular treatment and intensive neurocritical care. A 57-year-old woman fell down stairs and sustained cervical trauma. Initial computed tomography revealed a fracture of the atlas

CT Evaluation of Osseous Trauma at the Craniocervical Junction: A Pattern-Based Overview.

Osseous trauma of the craniocervical junction (CCJ) can present with subtle imaging findings that demand a structured and confident approach to CT interpretation. This video article presents a pattern-based overview of traumatic bony injuries affecting the CCJ, illustrated through multiplanar CT imaging and 3D anatomic models. Common injury types, including craniocervical dissociation, occipital condyle fractures, atlas fractures, odontoid process fractures, and axis spondylolysis are reviewed with emphasis on their appearance in axial, sagittal, and coronal planes. Fracture patterns and align

Retropharyngeal tendinitis: three probable cases with an unusually low epicentre.

Retropharyngeal tendinitis is a rare but underdiagnosed disorder. The clinical picture is characterized by increasingly severe pain in the upper neck occurring within 1 or 2 days and with pain aggravated by swallowing and head movements. Acute-phase roentgenograms show substantial soft-tissue swelling anterior to the vertebral bodies, C1 to C4, often accompanied by amorphous calciferous deposition below the anterior tubercle of the atlas. The course is benign, the patient being asymptomatic after 1 or 2 weeks. I briefly describe three cases which were characterized by severe pain in the mid-ce

Sleep apnea in rheumatoid arthritis patients with occipitocervical lesions: the prevalence and associated radiographic features.

Since sleep apnea is a risk factor for high mortality of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, this study examined the prevalence in RA patients with occipitocervical lesions, and the associated radiographic features. Twenty-nine RA patients requiring surgery for progressive myelopathy due to occipitocervical lesions (3 males, 26 females, average age 65 years) were preoperatively evaluated. Twenty-three (79%) had sleep apnea defined as apnea-hypopnea index >5 events per hour measured by a portable monitoring device, and all of them were classified as the obstructive type. Among gender, age, bone

Analysis and interrater reliability of pB-C2 using MRI and CT: data from the Park-Reeves Syringomyelia Research Consortium on behalf of the Pediatric Craniocervical Society.

OBJECTIVE The distance to the ventral dura, perpendicular to the basion to C2 line (pB-C2), is commonly employed as a measure describing the anatomy of the craniovertebral junction. However, both the reliability among observers and the clinical utility of this measurement in the context of Chiari malformation Type I (CM-I) have been incompletely determined. METHODS Data were reviewed from the first 600 patients enrolled in the Park-Reeves Syringomyelia Research Consortium with CM-I and syringomyelia. Thirty-one cases were identified in which both CT and MRI studies were available for review. T
