Epidemic cycles and post-epidemic decline of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in Italian children: implications for empirical macrolide prescribing.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) circulation has recently re-emerged worldwide, raising concerns about empirical macrolide use in pediatric respiratory infections. We analyzed long-term trends of MP circulation in a tertiary-care pediatric center in Italy between 2017 and 2025. Among 20,539 respiratory molecular tests performed, 648 were positive for MP, with the highest burden observed in children aged 5-12 years. Two epidemic peaks were identified, occurring in 2019 and 2024, followed by a marked and sustained decline in positivity from the last quarter of 2025 onward. Hospitalization was frequent

The Epidemic Diseases Act (1897): A study of international and domestic pressures on British epidemic policy formation in India.

The Epidemic Diseases Act (EDA) was enacted in February 1897 by the Government of India to prevent and control the spread of the plague. Since then, the Act has become a key legal tool for the control of epidemics/pandemics in India. We attempted to understand the international and domestic pressures that led to the adoption of the EDA in three ways. First, we analyse the legislative structure (Bombay Municipal Act of 1888, Indian Railways Act of 1890, and Act I of 1870) that dealt with infectious or contagious diseases in colonial India before the EDA came into force. Second, we focus on the …

Early detection of cholera epidemics to support control in fragile states: estimation of delays and potential epidemic sizes.

BACKGROUND: Cholera epidemics continue to challenge disease control, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected states. Rapid detection and response to small cholera clusters is key for efficient control before an epidemic propagates. To understand the capacity for early response in fragile states, we investigated delays in outbreak detection, investigation, response, and laboratory confirmation, and we estimated epidemic sizes. We assessed predictors of delays, and annual changes in response time. METHODS: We compiled a list of cholera outbreaks in fragile and conflict-affected states fro…

Virulence variation among epidemic and non-epidemic strains of Saint Louis encephalitis virus circulating in Argentina.

Saint Louis encephalitis virus caused an outbreak of febrile illness and encephalitis cases in Córdoba, Argentina, in 2005. During this outbreak, the strain CbaAr-4005 was isolated from Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. We hypothesised that this epidemic variant would be more virulent in a mouse model than two other non-epidemic strains (78V-6507 and CorAn-9275) isolated under different epidemiological conditions. To test this hypothesis, we performed a biological characterisation in a murine model, including mortality, morbidity and infection percentages and lethal infection indices using th

The investigation of a recurrence of an AHC virus epidemic at Lucknow: a serosurvey for AHC virus antibodies before and after the epidemic.

An epidemic of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) recurred at Lucknow during July to September 1975, after a gap of 4 years. Out of the 35 cases investigated thoroughly, 20 Entero-70-like cytopathogenic agents were isolated from the conjunctiva which were neutralized by antisera against AHC virus J670/71 of Japan. Seroconversion was seen in 7 out of 11 paired sera from patients. Serological study was also done on 100 sera collected before the AHC epidemic of 1971, 100 sera after 1971 and 100 sera after 1975 epidemic. There were no neutralizing antibodies in the pre-epidemic period, while

Strong information delay as a driver of epidemic waves: Mathematical modeling for drug trends and epidemic bio-preparedness.

Avoidance behaviors can have a substantial influence on both the spread of an infectious disease and on the long-term dynamics of substance use disorder. However, this behavior is typically reactive based on delayed information related to personal risk as well as both the length of exposure to and retention of that information. This suggests that in epidemic models, feedback delays should be strong - that is, not exponentially distributed (Erlang-1) but instead peaking at a point strictly in the past (Erlang-2 or greater). However, almost all studies of infectivity feedback delays are exponent

Epidemic strain YC2014 of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus could provide piglets against homologous challenge.

BACKGROUND: Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is the main causative agent of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED). Since December 2010, a large-scale outbreak of diarrhea has been observed in swine farms in China. Accumulated evidence indicates that this large-scale outbreak of diarrhea were caused by highly virulent PEDV variants. METHODS: A PEDV strain, YC2014, was isolated from intestinal samples of suckling piglets with acute diarrhea in 2014. The complete genomic sequence of YC2014 and the nucleotide sequence of S gene were aligned with sequences of published isolates using MEGA 5.1 soft

Epidemiology of oral-cavity and oropharyngeal carcinomas: controlling a tobacco epidemic while a human papillomavirus epidemic emerges.

Although tobacco prevalence is declining in most developed countries, less developed countries are still experiencing an increase in tobacco use. Thus the future burden of oral-cavity and oropharyngeal cancers in less developed countries is expected to be heavy. The incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal cancer is dramatically increasing in the United States and other developed countries, although trends in less developed countries are not clear at present. HPV vaccine compliance in the United States is low, although it continues to increase each year. Increasing the

Comparison of argentinean saint louis encephalitis virus non-epidemic and epidemic strain infections in an avian model.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV, Flavivirus, Flaviviridae) is an emerging mosquito-borne pathogen in South America, with human SLEV encephalitis cases reported in Argentina and Brazil. Genotype III strains of SLEV were isolated from Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes in Cordoba, Argentina in 2005, during the largest SLEV outbreak ever reported in South America. The present study tested the hypothesis that the recent, epidemic SLEV strain exhibits greater virulence in birds as compared with a non-epidemic genotype III strain isolated from mosquitoes in Santa Fe Province 27 years earlier. The

[Observations on the 1348 plague epidemic. Measures taken to combat its tragic effects and avoid epidemic recrudescence].

When the "Black Death" swept through Europe from southern France in 1348, in the short space of two years the Europeans were hit by one of the most serious epidemics ever recorded in human history. Yersinia pestis reached Europe by sea, its contamination propagated by the Genoese ships coming from the Crimean port of Jaffa. For the first time the world experienced microbiological unification: East and West were equally involved in the tragedy that spread, and no town remained unscathed during the various epidemic waves which succeeded one another in the following three centuries. The authors o…

The Maturation of the International Health Crisis Response: The Polish Typhus Epidemic of 1916-1923 Compared to the African Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic of 2013-2016: Part I, the Polish Epidemic.

Poland suffered an epidemic of louse-borne typhus from 1916-1923, with 400,000 cases and more than 130,000 deaths. The causative factors were depressed economic conditions and a refugee crisis that engulfed Poland after World War I. The recognition of the epidemic in 1919 stimulated the creation of the League of Red Cross Societies (LRCS). However, the LCRS had limited resources, and the Poles requested help from other governments and the League of Nations (LoN). The United States sent the American-Polish Relief Expedition to conduct delousing. However, the Polish-Soviet War of 1920 disrupted

Long-term trends of epibionts reflect Mediterranean striped dolphin abundance shifts caused by morbillivirus epidemics.

Since 1990, Mediterranean striped dolphins, Stenella coeruleoalba, have suffered two mass mortality events caused by the dolphin morbillivirus (DMV), but the population-level impact is unknown because abundance estimates are spatio-temporally sparse. This study investigates whether data from epibionts of striped dolphins-the barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis, the cyamid Syncyamus aequus, and the copepod Pennella balaenoptera, with different life cycles and degrees of specificity-could provide indirect evidence on host population dynamics. To address this question, we combined empirical and the
