A patient with axillary venous thrombosis caused by lymph node compression and the presence of a displaced catheter in the vascular lumen is presented. In this case, percutaneous interventional radiological procedures (balloon angioplasty and snare loop method) in conjunction with medical treatment were effective in limiting the post-thrombotic syndrome and restoring the proper positioning of the catheter, thereby saving the central venous access.

The subject of this case report is a patient with elevated serum levels of titanium (77 parts/billion [ppb]; normal, 3.3 ppb) and vanadium (0.38 ppb; normal, 0.17 ppb) resulting from excessive wear of a metal-backed patellar component in a total knee arthroplasty. Silicone stents are commonly used in dacryocystorhinostomy to help maintain a patent mucosal passageway into the nose. It is not unusual for a tube to become displaced and migrate laterally (stent prolapse), and, at times, it may be difficult to reposition it. We describe how stent prolapse may be prevented by using aneurysm clips to secure the silicone stents once they are in place.

During a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure, a Strecker stent was accidently pushed into the superior mesenteric vein. After successful shunt placement, the stent was withdrawn into the hepatic vein. A multipurpose basket catheter was attached to the distal end of the stent and a loop snare to the proximal end. In this way it was possible to stretch the stent and retrieve it percutaneously through the jugular sheath.

A middle-aged man sustained an isolated sustentaculum tali fracture that formed a stable nonunion. Subsequently, tarsal tunnel syndrome developed when this sustentacular fragment migrated superiorly to cause tibial nerve impingement. The patient presented with a history of longstanding foot and ankle pain. He was painfree 2 weeks after excision of the bony mass encased in fibrous tissue.

There have been no other cases of migration of an intrauterin device reported to have caused venous compression. In the case reported here, the intrauterin device was removed surgically together with a portion of the damaged vein. A venous graft from the internal jugular vein was performed. The mechanisms of perforations, different localizations are discussed and diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are proposed.

When non-surgical methods for removing intracardiac foreign body have failed, surgical removal should be attempted. Two patients who had dislodged ventriculoatrial shunts for hydrocephalus underwent open removal of catheters, one from the pulmonary artery while the other from the right atrium. Both were successfully retrieved without cardiopulmonary bypass. We describe the clinical and radiological features, with a review of the indications and techniques available.

A migratory intravascular bullet fragment located within the hypogastric vein was removed successfully with the aid of interventional radiologic techniques. The authors describe the use of the technique of balloon trapping as part of this procedure. A balloon should be inflated between the foreign body and the heart before retrieval is attempted in order to prevent migration back to the heart during the manipulation.

Sixteen cases with uterine perforation by a copper intrauterine device (IUD) are presented. In 13 cases the IUD had been inserted within 5 months following delivery, and in 6 cases the insertion had been painful. Missing string was the first sign in most cases. Laparatomy was performed in all cases to remove the IUD. The IUD was adherent to omentum or sigmoid in 10 cases. We report the case of a 39-year-old man presenting with an acute right-sided traumatic pneumothorax secondary to migration of a hypodermic needle fractured during intravenous drug use. BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies traversing the aerodigestive tract lining into the surrounding soft tissues is a well-known entity. A 14-year-old girl was referred to our hospital after swallowing a pin that was not visualized by laryngoscopy, despite a neck film that localized it to the level of the larynx.
