Impact of Copper on the Physiology and Transcriptome of Methylosinus Trichosporium OB3b Grown on Either Methane or Methanol.

Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b is a model methanotroph that converts methane to CO2 with methanol, formaldehyde, and formate as intermediates. Here we show that copper has a significant impact on the ability of Msn. trichosporium OB3b to grow on methanol, that is, growth consistently occurred on methanol in the absence of copper but not in its presence. Growth on methanol in the presence of copper, however, occurred in the presence of MOPS buffer that stabilized pH. Examination of transcriptome profiles, NADH/NAD ratios, and formate production indicates that growth disruption in the presence …

Selective Production of Methanol via Bidentate Coordination of an Intermediate on the Dual-Atom Electro-Catalyst.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction offers a route to produce liquid fuels such as methanol; however, strong competition from hydrogen evolution and limited control over key reaction intermediates lead to low single-product selectivity and poor stability under operating conditions. Heteronuclear dual-atom catalysts (DACs) have shown great promise in this regard because two neighboring catalyst atoms can cooperatively bind and polarize oxygenated intermediates. Despite these attractive features, DACs often struggle to stabilize the right early intermediate for methanol, so CO2 protonation defaults ba…

Iron-induced demethoxylation of lignin as an important source for methanol and its oxidation products in the environment.

Lignin, the largest reservoir of aromatic carbon in plants and soils, undergoes well-characterized biological demethylation by fungi and bac … ate the efficient release of entire methoxy groups from lignin monomers and methoxyphenols, forming methanol and subsequently formaldehyde. Isotopic labeling unequivocally shows that the complete -OCH3 group is liberated intact. Density functional theory calculations support an exergonic demethoxylation pathway with low activation energy (43 kJ/mol) and fa …

Catalytic Activity of an Ensemble of Sites for CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol on a ZrO2-on-Cu Inverse Catalyst.

The significant increase in CO2 emissions from heavy fossil fuel utilization has raised serious concerns, highlighting the need for effective methods to convert CO2 into value-added chemicals. Here, we report a computational investigation on the catalytic activity of ZrO2-on-Cu inverse catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, considering highly dispersed ZrO2 trimers on Cu (111). Such clusters present a large ensemble of formate-containing configurations, Zr3On(OH)m(OCHO)l, making the evaluation of the catalytic activity very challenging. We found that the sites on the various catalyst con…

Utilization of the liquid one carbon feedstocks methanol and formate for acetogenic bioproduction of chemicals and fuels.

The fight against climate change requires consideration of carbon as a critical parameter in production systems, with the ultimate aim of creating a truly sustainable circular carbon economy. In this context, microbial bioproduction systems are a promising route to renewably generate value-added chemicals and fuels. Methanol and formate have recently gained interest as microbial one-carbon feedstocks, which can be produced sustainably from carbon dioxide and renewable energy, are easy to store and transport and readily dissolve in aqueous solutions. Acetogenic bacteria are strictly anaerobic m…

Investigating the Effect of Hydrogen Bonding on the Viscosity of an Aqueous Methanol Solution Using Raman Spectroscopy.

Water science has always been a central part of modern scientific research. In this study, the viscosity and hydrogen bond structures of methanol aqueous solutions with different molar ratios were investigated via confocal microscopic Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectra of methanol in the CH and CO stretching regions were measured in order to investigate the structure of water/methanol molecules. The points of transition were identified by observing changes in viscosity following changes in concentration, and the bands were assigned to the C-H bond vibration shifts where the molar ratios of …

Identification of Transient Intermediates and Active Species in Atomic CZA Catalysts for CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

Direct hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol is a promising strategy for carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Copper-zinc-alumina (CZA) catalysts are widely used for this transformation, yet the nature of the active Cu and Zn species and the reaction intermediates remains debated due to their sensitivity to feed composition and temperature. This challenge is compounded by the high metal loading in conventional CZA catalysts, which obscures active species signals with background contributions from spectator species. To address this, we synthesized model CuZn/Al2O3 catalysts using bimetal…

Potential application of zirconium molybdate as a novel catalyst for the selective dehydrogenation of methanol to anhydrous formaldehyde.

The non-oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol is considered a promising method for producing formaldehyde (FA), where the resulting anhydrous formaldehyde is perfect for the use in the subsequent generation of oxygenated synthetic fuels. In the current investigation, a series of Zr(MoO4)2 nanoaggregates, as a novel solid acid catalyst, were hydrothermally fabricated at different temperatures in the presence of triethylamine (TEA) as a surfactant. The original and calcined catalysts were characterized by TGA, DSC, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, HR-TEM, acidity and nitrogen sorption. Analyses revealed that th…

XoxF and the Calvin-Benson cycle mediate lanthanide-dependent growth on methanol in Bradyrhizobium and Sinorhizobium.

Nodule-forming bacteria play crucial roles in plant health and nutrition by providing fixed nitrogen to leguminous plants. Despite the importance of this relationship, how nodule-forming bacteria are affected by plant exudates and soil minerals is not fully characterized. Here, the effects of plant-derived methanol and lanthanide metals on the growth of nitrogen-fixing Rhizobiales are examined. Prior work has demonstrated that select Bradyrhizobium strains can assimilate methanol only in the presence of lanthanide metals; however, the pathway enabling assimilation remains unknown. In this stud…

Development of a Microwave Sensor for Real-Time Monitoring of a Micro Direct Methanol Fuel Cell.

Micro direct methanol fuel cells (μDMFCs) are a promising power source for microelectronic devices and systems. As the operating state and performance of a μDMFC is generally determined by both electrochemical polarization and methanol crossover, it is important to monitor the methanol concentration in μDMFCs. Here, we design and fabricate a microwave sensor and integrate it with a μDMFC for the online detection of methanol concentration in a nonintrusive way. The sensing area is set at the bottom of the anode chamber of a μDMFC which exhibits a maximum output power density of 28.8 mW cm-2 at …

Exploring the Impact of Active Site Structure on the Conversion of Methane to Methanol in Cu-Exchanged Zeolites.

In the past, Cu-oxo or -hydroxy clusters hosted in zeolites have been suggested to enable the selective conversion of methane to methanol, but the impact of the active site's stoichiometry and structure on methanol production is still poorly understood. Herein, we apply theoretical modeling in conjunction with experiments to study the impact of these two factors on partial methane oxidation in the Cu-exchanged zeolite SSZ-13. Phase diagrams developed from first-principles suggest that Cu-hydroxy or Cu-oxo dimers are stabilized when O2 or N2O are used to activate the catalyst, respectively. We …

Ethanol, acetaldehyde, and methanol in the gas phase and rainwater in different biomes and urban regions of Brazil.

In the context of the increasing global use of ethanol biofuel, this work investigates the concentrations of ethanol, methanol, and acetaldehyde, in both the gaseous phase and rainwater, across six diverse urban regions and biomes in Brazil, a country where ethanol accounts for nearly half the light-duty vehicular fuel consumption. Atmospheric ethanol median concentrations in São Paulo (SP) (12.3 ± 12.1 ppbv) and Ribeirão Preto (RP) (12.1 ± 10.9 ppbv) were remarkably close, despite the SP vehicular fleet being ∼13 times larger. Likewise, the rainwater VWM ethanol concentration in SP (4.64 ± 0.…

Mobile genetic elements associated with utilization of dichloromethane and methanol as energy sources in Cupriavidus metallidurans.

Cupriavidus metallidurans strain PD11 isolated from laboratory waste drainage can use C1 compounds, such as dichloromethane (DCM) and methanol, as a sole carbon and energy source. However, strain CH34 (a type-strain) cannot grow in the medium supplemented with DCM. In the present study, we aimed to unravel the genetic elements underlying the utilization of C1 compounds by strain PD11. The genome subtraction approach indicated that only strain PD11 had several genes highly homologous to those of Herminiimonas arsenicoxydans strain ULPAs1. Moreover, a series of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to…
