The copycat phenomenon after two Finnish school shootings: an adolescent psychiatric perspective.

BACKGROUND: Two school shootings with altogether 18 victims took place in Finland in November 2007 and September 2008. Homicides and suicides are both associated with the copycat phenomenon. The aim of the present study was to characterize adolescent copycats who had threatened to carry out a school massacre. METHODS: The nation-wide study evaluated 77 13- to 18-year-old adolescents who were sent for adolescent psychiatric evaluations between 8.11.2007 and 30.6.2009, one of the reasons for evaluation being a threat of massacre at school. The medical files of the copycats were retrospectively

The Joint Effects of Depression and Comorbid Psychiatric Disorders on Suicide Deaths: Competing Antagonism as an Explanation for Subadditivity.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of the effect of interaction between psychiatric disorders on suicide have reported mixed results. We investigated the joint effect of depression and various comorbid psychiatric disorders on suicide. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-cohort study with all suicide deaths occurring between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 2015 in Denmark (n = 14,103) and a comparison subcohort comprised of a 5% random sample of the source population at baseline (n = 265,183). We quantified the joint effect of pairwise combinations of depression and major psychiatric disor

Alcohol Use Disorder and Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorders.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) frequently co-occurs with other psychiatric disorders, including personality disorders, which are pervasive, persistent, and impairing. Personality disorders are associated with myriad serious outcomes, have a high degree of co-occurrence with substance use disorders, including AUD, and incur significant health care costs. This literature review focuses on co-occurring AUD and personality disorders characterized by impulsivity and affective dysregulation, specifically antisocial personality disorders and borderline personality disorders. Prevalence rates, potential e

Associations between the Five-Factor Model personality traits and psychotic experiences in patients with psychotic disorders, their siblings and controls.

Earlier studies indicated that personality characteristics contribute to symptomatic outcome in patients with psychotic disorders. The aim of the present study was to further explore this connection by examining the relationship between the Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality traits and a dimensional liability for psychosis. FFM traits according to the NEO-FFI and levels of subclinical psychotic symptoms according to the CAPE were assessed in 217 patients with psychotic disorders, 281 of their siblings and 176 healthy controls. Psychotic symptoms according to the PANSS were assessed in the pat

Prevalence of Asperger's syndrome in a secure hospital.

BACKGROUND: The hypothesis that Asperger's syndrome (AS) may go unrecognised in forensic populations was examined by ascertaining the prevalence in Broadmoor Special Hospital. METHOD: The entire male patient population was screened by examination of case notes. Identified cases were subject to the next stage of the study, which involved observation and interviewing of patients, and a semi-structured interview of key staff. RESULTS: A prevalence of 1.5% (0.6% to 3.3%, 95% CI) was found. The addition of equivocal cases increased the prevalence to 2.3%. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of AS in Broa

Personality characteristics of parents of autistic children: a controlled study.

Parents of 21 autistic children and of 21 children with other handicaps, matched for sex, age, IQ and father's occupation, were interviewed with a schedule known to discriminate between schizoid and non-schizoid people. Ratings were reliable and the interviewers remained "blind". Parents of autistic children, especially fathers, were significantly more often rated as having schizoid traits. They were also more intellectual.

Clinical features and psychiatric comorbidity of subjects with pathological gambling behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Sociodemographic features, phenomenology, and psychiatric comorbidity of 30 subjects reporting pathological gambling behavior were examined. METHODS: Twenty-three men and seven women were recruited by advertisement and word-of-mouth. They all scored higher than 5 points on the South Oaks Gambling Screen, indicating problematic gambling behaviors. They completed structured and semistructured assessments, including the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for DSM-III-R disorders (DIS), the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire, Fourth Revision (PDQ-IV), and the Minnesota Impulsive Disorders

[Validation of the dialectal Arabic version of Barratt's impulsivity scale, the BIS-11].

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity is a symptom of several disorders such as personality disorder, bipolar disorder, suicidal behaviour, substance use disorders, schizophrenia...Forensic psychiatry is particularly concerned with impulsivity. It increases the risk of violence among clinical populations and figures in various instruments such as the HCR-20, the VRAG and the PCL-R to assess violence risk. It is one of many dimensions that can lead to aggressive behaviour among psychiatric patients. The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), in its 11th version, is a 30-item self-report instrument that helps a

Occupational disability on psychiatric grounds in South African school-teachers.

OBJECTIVE: School-teachers are exposed to high levels of stress and have high rates of premature retirement on psychiatric grounds. This study investigated factors associated with occupational disability due to psychiatric disorders in teachers in South Africa. METHOD: This retrospective study investigated 81 school-teachers in the Cape Town area who had been declared permanently medically disabled as a consequence of psychiatric disorders. RESULTS: Patients were relatively young (44+/-6.1 yrs), had experienced symptoms for 5.2+/-3.8 yrs, and had been treated for 4+/-3.5 yrs. Almost half had

From controversy to confusion: A commentary on how Marcus et al.'s (2025) Psychopathic Boldness Scale further muddies the boldness construct.

The Psychopathic Boldness Scale (see record 2025-96918-001) is a newly developed 21-item self-report measure intended to assess boldness as it manifests within psychopathy. In this commentary, we raise concerns about the PBS's construct validity, particularly its conceptual and empirical overlap with antagonism-related traits. Drawing on theoretical analysis and results from Marcus et al., we evaluated how PBS items function relative to the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure. Intraclass correlations of overall correlational profiles revealed that the nomological network of the PBS more closely alig

Crisis resolution home treatment team Clinicians' perceptions of using a recovery approach with people with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: It is known that people with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder often experience crises in their mental wellbeing. There is little evidence about the approaches of mental health nurses in community-based crisis teams when working with people with a diagnosis of BPD. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO THE EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This paper highlights that limited resources, work-patterns and issues of stigma present challenges to delivering recovery-oriented care. The paper highlights that nurses typically try to navigate the challenges to continue to provide individ

Impact on the use and cost of other services following intervention by an inpatient pathway homelessness team in an acute mental health hospital.

BACKGROUND: Mental illness in people experiencing homelessness is common and a key reason for attendance at emergency departments and admission to hospital. AIMS: This paper describes how the KHP Pathway homeless team impacted use and cost of health and wider services. The Pathway model had never been adopted by a mental health hospital, and there had never been an economic analysis to evaluate service use before and after intervention. METHOD: Service use was measured using an adapted version of the Client Service Receipt Inventory (CSRI) with a simple before and after design at admission,

Measurement tools for mental health problems and mental well-being in people with severe or profound intellectual disabilities: A systematic review.

Mental health problems affect people with intellectual disabilities (ID) at rates similar to or in excess of the non-ID population. People with severe ID are likely to have persistent mental health problems. In this systematic review (PROSPERO 2015:CRD42015024469), we identify and evaluate the methodological quality of available measures of mental health problems or well-being in individuals with severe or profound ID. Electronic searches of ten databases identified relevant publications. Two reviewers independently reviewed titles and abstracts of retrieved records (n=41,232) and full-text ar

Harassment, stalking, threats and attacks targeting New Zealand politicians: A mental health issue.

OBJECTIVE: Due to the nature of their work, politicians are at greater risk of stalking, harassment and attack than the general population. The small, but significantly elevated risk of violence to politicians is predominantly due not to organised terrorism or politically motivated extremists but to fixated individuals with untreated serious mental disorders, usually psychosis. Our objective was to ascertain the frequency, nature and effects of unwanted harassment of politicians in New Zealand and the possible role of mental illness in this harassment. METHODS: New Zealand Members of Parliame

Involuntary treatment in anorexia nervosa.

It is difficult to predict, on first contact with patients with AN, whether a compulsory admission to hospital may become necessary to protect their lives and health. There are only tentative pointers so far to an entrenched avoidance of treatment: (1) components of a disordered personality associated with a history of childhood physical or sexual abuse or previous episodes of self-harm and (2) the presence of a more severe illness, suggested by numerous previous admissions. An involuntary admission is likely to be beneficial at least in the short term, as shown by a gratifying weight gain, al

[Criminologic aspects in the treatment of sex offenders].

The conditions determining statutory offences as represented by indictable sex offences, have been amended and revised by the 4th Penal Reform Law of the Federal German Penal Code, in 1973, under the heading "Indictable Offences against Sexual Self-Determination". This heading, which is meant to convey a programme, however, does not agree with the actual contents or core of various paragraphs. These new statutes have been violently criticised by opponents coming from quite different camps. The development of sexual delinquency shows a rather decreasing crime rate since the end of World War II,

Axis I and II comorbidity and psychosocial functioning in female adolescents with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is known to be associated with high rates of comorbidity and severe impairment of psychosocial functioning in adults. The aim of this study was to investigate Axis I and Axis II disorders, as well as psychosocial functioning, in a clinical sample of adolescents with BPD and to compare these with participants with mixed psychiatric diagnoses. METHODS: Female adolescent patients were consecutively recruited from the child and adolescent psychiatry department of a university hospital. Axis I and Axis II diagnoses were assessed by experienced clin

Clinical utility of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale: A survey of German mental health professionals.

The Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders and ICD-11 adopt a dimensional approach to personality disorders, defining them in terms of impairments in self-related (identity, self-direction) and interpersonal (empathy, intimacy) personality functions. This study examined the clinical utility of a clinician-rated global evaluation of personality functioning based on the Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS). A total of 346 German mental health professionals provided LPFS ratings for 1,403 patients, stratified by 38 diagnostic categories, including, but not limited to, personal
