Can We Perform CT of the Appendix with Less Than 1 mSv? A De-escalating Dose-simulation Study.

OBJECTIVES: To systematically explore the lowest reasonably achievable radiation dose for appendiceal CT using an iterative reconstruction (IR) in young adults. METHODS: We prospectively included 30 patients who underwent 2.0-mSv CT for suspected appendicitis. From the helical projection data, 1.5-, 1.0- and 0.5-mSv CTs were generated using a low-dose simulation tool and the knowledge-based IR. We performed step-wise non-inferiority tests sequentially comparing 2.0-mSv CT with each of 1.5-, 1.0- and 0.5-mSv CT, with a predetermined non-inferiority margin of 0.06. The primary end point was the

A Segmentation Algorithm for Quantitative Analysis of Heterogeneous Tumors of the Cervix With ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT.

As positron-emission tomography (PET) images have low spatial resolution and much noise, accurate image segmentation is one of the most challenging issues in tumor quantification. Tumors of the uterine cervix present a particular challenge because of urine activity in the adjacent bladder. Here, we propose and validate an automatic segmentation method adapted to cervical tumors. Our proposed methodology combined the gradient field information of both the filtered PET image and the level set function into a level set framework by constructing a new evolution equation. Furthermore, we also const

Comparison of diagnostic accuracy of root perforation, external resorption and fractures using cone-beam computed tomography, panoramic radiography and conventional & digital periapical radiography.

CONTEXT: Some radicular changes are challenging for clinicians to diagnose, such as of root perforations, external root resorption (ERR), and vertical root fractures (VRFs). This study aims to facilitate it by comparing the diagnostic accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), orthopantomography, and conventional and digital periapical radiography (DPR) in the diagnosis of such problems. Is it worth doing CBCT despite the radiation dose? AIMS: To evaluate and compare the diagnostic accuracy of CBCT, panoramic radiography, and conventional and DPR in the diagnosis of root perforation (R

Sectional anatomy aid for improvement of decompression surgery approach to vertical segment of facial nerve.

The aim of this study was to find a surgical approach to a vertical segment of the facial nerve (VFN) with a relatively wide visual field and small lesion by studying the location and structure of VFN with cross-sectional anatomy. High-resolution spiral computed tomographic multiplane reformation was used to reform images that were parallel to the Frankfort horizontal plane. To locate the VFN, we measured the distances as follows: from the VFN to the paries posterior bony external acoustic meatus on 5 typical multiplane reformation images, to the promontorium tympani and the root of the tympan

Comparison of two methods for quantitative assessment of mandibular asymmetry using cone beam computed tomography image volumes.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare two methods of measuring mandibular asymmetry. The first method uses mirroring of the mandible in the midsagittal plane; the second uses mirroring of the mandible and registration on the cranial base. METHODS: Surface models were constructed from cone beam CT (CBCT) scans of 50 patients with asymmetry. For the first approach, a midsagittal plane was defined for each patient as the plane passing through nasion, anterior nasal spine and basion. Mirrors for both halves of the mandible were created. The second approach consisted of mirroring the im

Optimizing outcomes in coronary CT imaging.

Cardiac computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) is revolutionizing our approach to the identification and management of coronary artery atherosclerosis. CCTA has the unique ability to assess extracoronary cardiac findings within the standard field of view, including the anatomy of cardiac structures-the atria, ventricles, valves, pericardium, great vessels, and venous anatomy-and any related abnormalities. Appropriate clinical applications include evaluation of intermediate-risk patients with acute chest pain and those with suspected coronary anomalies, uninterpretable or equivocal stress test
