We present a case of hyperkaliaemic cardiac arrest in a patient with Angelman's syndrome after administration of suxamethonium in rapid sequence intubation. The patient was admitted to the critical care unit in with aspiration pneumonia and intestinal obstruction. They had a cardiac arrest after suxamethonium administration. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that Rocuronium Bromide can be used for rapid sequence induction in emergency conditions.
METHODS: Our study was performed between December 2005 and May 2006 in Jordan University Hospital, Jordan. We studied the efficacy and intubating conditions after administrating of Rocuronium Bromide 1 mg/kg at 60 second in group of 60 pregnant women undergoing elective or emergency cesarean section and compared the results with those obtained after giving Suxamethonium 1 mg/kg at 60 seconds in a group of patients similar to the Rocuronium group.

The effect of suxamethonium on serum potassium levels was studied in 20 black patients undergoing emergency surgery. Forty patients were studied in a randomised trial to investigate the effect of pre-operative oral dantrolene on the increase of serum myoglobin and creatinine kinase due to suxamethonium administration. Twenty patients in the treatment group were given 1.5 mg/kg dantrolene orally 4 hours pre-operatively. Eleven patients who suffered a reaction to the administration of muscle relaxants during induction of general anesthesia were explored using skin tests, leukocyte histamine release, lymphocyte transformation test, and the Prausnitz-Küstner test (P-K). In nine patients, undergoing repeat operations because of severe intra-abdominal infection developing after major abdominal surgery, serum potassium concentrations were monitored during induction of anaesthesia.
