Healing following tooth extraction in cyclosporine-fed rats.

Healing after tooth extraction was studied in rats treated with cyclosporine-A (CSA) for four weeks. Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to one of three groups of 20 rats each. The maxillary right molars were extracted from two groups; the third group served as a non-extraction control. The non-extraction group and one extraction group (vehicle control) received the solvent mineral oil daily, and the other extraction group received 15 mg/kg CSA in mineral oil. Five rats from each group were killed 5, 10, 14 and 28 days after extraction and samples analyzed histologically. On days 5 an

Antibiotic prophylaxis in third molar surgery: A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial using split-mouth technique.

The use of prophylactic antibiotics to reduce postoperative complications in third molar surgery remains controversial. The study was a prospective, randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. 100 patients were randomly assigned to two groups. Each patient acted as their own control using the split-mouth technique. Two unilateral impacted third molars were removed under antibiotic cover and the other two were removed without antibiotic cover. The first group received antibiotics on the first surgical visit. On the second surgical visit (after 3 weeks), placebo capsules were gi

Comparative Study of Piezoelectric and Rotary Osteotomy Technique for Third Molar Impaction.

INTRODUCTION: Bone removal is necessary for extracting the third molars that are erupted, partially erupted, and/or impacted in bone. Hence, it is necessary to choose a surgical method or instruments that conform to anatomic landmarks and are based on physiological principles. Many authors have reported injuries to the adjacent tooth, especially the distal part of periodontium after removal of second molar. Hence, the present study was undertaken to assess and compare the surgical and postsurgi-cal outcomes of third molar removal using piezoelectric surgery and rotary bur. MATERIALS AND METHO

Evaluation of postextraction wound healing of immediate complete dentures using a modified inflammation proliferation remodeling scale following platelet-rich fibrin and xenograft application: A randomized clinical trial.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Immediate denture insertion after dental extraction results in problems with socket healing, negatively affecting patient responses. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and xenografts have been introduced to overcome such healing problems, but their clinical outcomes require further study. PURPOSE: The purpose of this randomized clinical study was to assess postextraction healing and correlate it with bone volume changes during immediate denture insertion after socket treatment using PRF and xenografts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 24 randomly distributed participan

A new technique for bone augmentation and papilla reconstruction with autogenous free gingival-bone grafts.

Autogenous grafting of gingival or bone tissue is often indicated to obtain optimal esthetics and function in periodontal and implant therapy. In the present study, 32 maxillary teeth were extracted, and the postextraction defects were treated with 32 autogenous cylindric free gingival-bone grafts retrieved with trephine burs from intraoral donor sites. Free gingival-bone grafts were also used to obtain root coverage and papilla reconstruction in three patients who required esthetic enhancement. Twelve to 16 weeks after the graft procedure, biopsies were retrieved and processed for histologic

The periodontal ligament-periosteum axis: An underexplored pathway for alveolar bone adaptation.

The periodontal ligament (PDL) and periosteum are mechanosensitive tissues essential for alveolar bone maintenance, remodeling, and regeneration. Their functional interplay, particularly during orthodontic tooth movement, remains underexplored. This review introduces the novel concept of the PDL-periosteum axis as a biologically interactive unit coordinating site-specific alveolar adaptation and periodontal homeostasis. Both tissues share mechanosensitive and osteogenic pathways regulating progenitor recruitment, osteoblastic differentiation, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Through crosst

Socket-shield technique with minimally invasive osteotomy preparation as well as simultaneous sinus lift utilizing Densah Bur and platelet-rich fibrin membrane followed by immediate implant placement in a symptomatic posterior endodontically treated decayed root stumps site: A case report with 1-year follow-up.

Soft-tissue defect and alveolar bundle bone resorption (horizontally and vertically) are inevitable events following tooth extraction predominately on the buccal aspect which will impact the implant surgical planning starting from implant size selection, position, emergence profile, etc. To overcome the same, complex soft and hard tissue regeneration procedures have been recommended in the literature but they are highly expensive and technique sensitive too. To prevent buccal bone resorption and gain good emergence profile socket-shield technique (SST) is widely recommended. Additionally, in o

Osteoporotic Changes in the Periodontium Impair Alveolar Bone Healing.

Osteoporosis is associated with decreased bone density and increased bone fragility, but how this disease affects alveolar bone healing is not clear. The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which osteoporosis affects the jaw skeleton and then to evaluate possible mechanisms whereby an osteoporotic phenotype might affect the rate of alveolar bone healing following tooth extraction. Using an ovariectomized mouse model coupled with micro-computed tomographic imaging, histologic, molecular, and cellular assays, we first demonstrated that the appendicular and jaw skeletons both d

Induction and prevention of cleft lip, alveolus and palate and neural tube defects with special consideration of B vitamins and the methylation cycle.

Previous studies on the development of cleft lip, alveolus, palate, and velum and neural tube defects have revealed several shared multifactorial causes. Both anomalies emerge at different times during embryonic development and are not associated with each other unless there is a genetic component to the etiology. Vitamin deficiency disorders are one of several factors contributing to the etiology of these anomalies.Vitamins B6, folic acid and B12 play an essential role in the methylation cycle. A lack of or deficiency in these vitamins thus has severe consequences for the organism, especially
