Hand-transmitted vibration and biodynamic response of the human hand-arm: a critical review.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) has been associated with prolonged exposure to vibration transmitted to the human hand-arm system from hand-held power tools, vibrating machines, or hand-held vibrating workpieces. The biodynamic response of the human hand and arm to hand transmitted vibration (HTV) forms an essential basis for effective evaluations of exposures, vibration-attenuation mechanisms, and potential injury mechanisms. The biodynamic response to HTV and its relationship to HAVS are critically reviewed and discussed to highlight the advances and the need for further research. In view…

Effect of ultrasonic vibration and various sealer and cement combinations on titanium post removal.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ultrasonic vibration on the force required to remove prefabricated posts. Ninety-six extracted human canines were divided into eight groups, which were prepared and obturated with gutta-percha and either a eugenol-containing (Roth's 801 Elite) or eugenol-free (AH26) sealer. Titanium #6 Parapost XH posts were cemented with either zinc phosphate or Panavia 21 resin cement. One half of the sample was subjected to ultrasonic vibration for 16 min at the post-dentin interface, whereas the other half received no vibration (controls). Each combi…

Changes in permeability of strial vessels following vibration given to auditory ossicle by drill.

We produced drill-induced damage of the auditory ossicles of guinea pigs to study changes over time in the permeability of the blood vessels of the stria vascularis to horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In group A, the stimulus was applied for 10 seconds after intravenous injection of HRP. In group B, it was applied for 30 seconds, and in group C, for 60 seconds. The cochlea was fixed with 2% glutaraldehyde perfused through the round window, and the guinea pigs were then decapitated. The stria vascularis of the basal and third turns was examined. The leakage of HRP from the blood vessels of the str

Mechanical stimulation in the form of vibration prevents postmenopausal bone loss in ovariectomized rats.

Physical exercise is recommended for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. However, its exact role and effectiveness in adulthood is unclear. While vigorous exercise of long duration enhances bone density, few adult individuals comply with such training programs. The present study evaluates the influence of nonphysiological mechanical stimulation, in the form of low intensity vibration (frequency: 50 Hz, acceleration: 2 g, 30 min/day for 5 days/week), on the prevention of bone loss in an animal model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. In the ovariectomised groups of rats a statistically s…

Perfusion defects in vibration white finger: a clinical assessment using isotope limb blood flow.

Vibration white finger is a vasospastic disorder caused by long-term exposure to vibration tools. In an attempt to assess the extent of obliterative vessel disease in this disorder, hyperaemic hand blood flow was measured using technetium-labelled human albumin and a gamma camera. This method quantitates blood flow in ml/100 ml of tissue per min in addition to providing a perfusion image used to assess vessel disease. A perfusion score is then given to this image to reflect the extent of disease. The results of this study demonstrate that 78% of patients with vibration white finger had evidenc…

Radiographic osteoarthrosis in the acromioclavicular joint resulting from manual work or exposure to vibration.

The hypothesis that manual work and exposure to vibration are antecedents to the development of osteoarthrosis was assessed employing a cross sectional study design. The frequency of osteoarthrosis in the acromioclavicular joint was studied in three groups of workers in the construction industry. Two groups were manual workers (54 bricklayers and 55 rock blasters); the third group consisted of 98 foremen. The radiographic appearance of the right and left acromioclavicular joints was classified into one of five grades of osteoarthrosis. A protocol was developed to assess exposure on the basis o…

[Research on the dose-response relationship of hand transmitted vibration and its hygienic standard].

According to ISO 5349-1986, the akw(4) was 9.04-41.47m/s2 which was measured and calculated in 5 types of instruments: chain saw, cleaner, rock driller, riveter & emery wheel. There were 170 cases with white finger through epidemiologic investigation on 5 types of workers in 1,675 persons. Based on the work mentioned above, a formula, which represented worker cumulative exposure to vibration was deduced: D = [(a2kw(4).T)1/2.Y.d]2 Furthermore, the dose-response relationship of hand transmitted vibration and prevalence of white finger was computed, the regression equation was: P = 1.0904X - 6.21…

An Edge-Computing Sensor Platform for ISO 2631-1 Whole-Body Vibration Exposure Metrics.

Timely feedback on whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure requires standardised metrics during measurement, yet many workflows record raw acceleration for offline processing, delaying feedback and increasing the data burden for bandwidth-constrained deployment. This paper presents a sensing node computing ISO 2631-1/AS 2670.1 exposure metrics on-device and transmitting metric records, not waveforms. The node combines an LIS2DH microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometer with an RP2040 microcontroller to calculate weighted root-mean-square (RMS) acceleration, daily exposure A(8), vibration…

Clinical Readiness of Hemodynamic Estimation from Cardiac Vibration Signals: An Endpoint-Specific Critical Review.

PURPOSE: Cardiac vibration signals have been investigated as unobtrusive surrogates of central hemodynamics, but the literature frequently mixes physiological plausibility, association, and clinically meaningful validation. This review evaluates the validation readiness of vibration-based estimation of central hemodynamic parameters, specifically stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), and arterial blood pressure (BP), including cuffless or central BP claims when explicitly reported. Ejection fraction (EF) and pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) are also considered as related endpoints …

Void Suppression Method of CFRP Variable-Thickness Structure Components by Vibration-Assisted Curing Process.

Composite components with variable-thickness structures often suffer from insufficient forming pressure during curing due to complex pressure transfer in regions with abrupt thickness changes, which easily causes void defects and degrades component performance. In this study, a mechanical vibration-assisted double vacuum bag process is proposed. Finite element analysis of the vibration energy field in saturated porous composites is conducted, and curing experiments for variable-thickness specimens are designed. The effects of vibration, vacuum, and their synergy on void characteristics and mec…

High-Frequency Vibration as a Vestibular Stimulus: From Jerk-Rich Physiology to Clinical Applications.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency bone-conducted vibration (BCV) and skull vibration-induced nystagmus (SVIN) are widely used to probe vestibular function, yet their physical nature and physiological targets remain incompletely defined. In particular, the relationship between vibration physics and jerk, the time derivative of acceleration, and their relevance to vestibular activation has not been systematically explored. OBJECTIVE: To develop an engineering-informed framework for high-frequency vestibular stimulation, linking jerk-rich transient stimuli to otolithic biomechanics and vestibular signa…

Surface Phonon-Mediated Molecular Diffusion via Vibration-Phonon Coupling at the Single-Molecule Level.

Understanding the underlying mechanisms that induce molecular motion on solid surfaces is essential for elucidating elementary surface processes such as molecular diffusion and reactions. To date, several excitation pathways using electrons, heat, and light have been shown to induce the vibrational excitation of molecular adsorbates on surfaces. However, the contribution of substrate phonons to the behaviors of adsorbates has been underexplored despite its ubiquitous importance in various chemical processes. Here, we present evidence that surface phonons can actively induce molecular diffusion…

Underestimation of Liver Fibrosis Using Vibration-Controlled Transient Elastography on Cirrhosis. Are There Predictors?

BACKGROUND: Detection of liver fibrosis helps to make therapeutic decisions and with screening in patients with chronic liver diseases. Transient elastography (TE) is an accurate, noninvasive technique to assess liver fibrosis but sometimes it is underestimated. Here we aimed for associations and predictors related to the underestimation of liver fibrosis using TE. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study involving adult patients with cirrhosis who underwent TE and had their clinical data analyzed. Patients were categorized into two groups based on liver stiffness measurement (LSM), e

Decoding the Feeling: Investigating the Vibration Used in Sim Racing Steering Wheel Haptic Feedback.

BACKGROUND: Haptic technology has long been integrated into simulated (sim) environments to create a sense of realism and improve performance. In sim racing, force and vibrotactile feedback have been implemented into steering wheels to create a more realistic experience. However, little is understood about how these types of feedback convey information to the sim racer. This study aimed to decode the vibration frequencies transferred through the steering wheel to the user and investigate how these frequencies vary as the strength of each feedback channel is manipulated. METHODS: Using a Norax…

Experimental Study on Vibration Attenuation Characteristics of Ballastless Track Structures in Urban Rail Transit.

With the rapid development of urban rail transit, the intensity and impact range of train-induced vibrations are increasing. Investigating the transmission characteristics and attenuation patterns of these vibrations in track structures aids in understanding train-induced environmental vibrations. This study conducted rail impact experiments on a long sleeper integrated slab of a straight section of a subway tunnel. The hammer struck the rail at various positions, and acceleration sensors recorded the responses of the rail, slab, and tunnel. In order to determine the impact force, the vertical…
