Increased prevalence of Helicobacter pylori antibodies among nurses.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have suggested that Helicobacter pylori infection in asymptomatic subjects is transmitted from person to person. Its prevalence is higher in the institutionalized setting. If that is the case, persons involved in patient care should have a higher prevalence of the infection. METHODS: We estimated the prevalence of H pylori antibodies among groups of asymptomatic medical and nursing staff and compared them with volunteer blood donors of similar age and sex. RESULTS: One hundred fifty-eight nurses and aides, 59 residents, 46 senior medical students, and 22 senior n…

[Non ulcer dyspepsia, endoscopic gastritis and Helicobacter pylori].

We studied 33 patients with non ulcer dyspepsia and endoscopic gastritis. 21 were female (63.4%) and 12 male (36.4%). Helicobacter pylori (HP) was investigated by gastric mucosal biopsy. Urease test, Gram, culture, and histology were performed in all and two or more of these test hat to be positive to consider HP infection. 16/33 resulted HP positive (48.8%). Erosive gastritis was most commonly associated with H.P. infection (62.5%). This was statistically significant. In all the cases HP positive chronic gastritis was present. 15/16 were active chronic gastritis. Our results suggest that eros…

Helicobacter pylori and associated gastroduodenal diseases. Review article.

Helicobacter pylori is a microaerophilic, Gram-negative, spiral rod, the role of which in different gastric diseases has been investigated worldwide since the beginning of the 1980s. H. pylori has been shown to be the causative agent in active chronic gastritis, and it is regularly found in patients endoscopied for duodenal ulcer. The bacterium is also frequently isolated from persons with gastric ulcer, gastric carcinoma and non-ulcer dyspepsia. Apart from cultivation of the bacterium, other diagnostic procedures include various staining methods and urease tests of gastric biopsy samples. The…

Hypothesis: Helicobacter pylori, urease, mucus, and gastric ulcer.

Ammonia, released in the gastric mucosa by the action of Helicobacter pylori urease on transuded plasma urea, curtails the biosynthesis of mucus and/or causes the mucus to be disassembled at the mucosal surface. These changes facilitate colonisation by H pylori and may promote gastric ulcer formation.

In silico approach to Helicobacter pylori vaccine design.

Helicobacter pylori, a Gram-negative microorganism, infects over half of the human population worldwide. Its extensive genetic variability and capacity to bypass host immune defences continue to impede the creation of an effective vaccine. Nonetheless, contemporary progress in computational biology and immunoinformatics has introduced innovative methodologies that can substantially support and accelerate vaccine design against this pathogen. In the present work, an in silico strategy was employed to develop a multi-epitope vaccine targeting H. pylori. The FlaA, UreB and PSA D15 proteins were c…

The importance of Helicobacter pylori eradication: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a gram-negative bacterium infecting over 40% of the global population, with highest prevalence in low- and middle-income regions. Chronic infection leads to persistent gastritis and can result in peptic ulcer disease, dyspepsia and gastric adenocarcinoma. Despite its high pathogenic potential, population-based screening and eradication programmes remain limited, particularly in Europe. METHODS: This narrative review summarisescurrent evidence on the epidemiology, clinical burden and eradication strategies for H. pylori. A literature search of Pub…

Advances in Helicobacter pylori lipopolysaccharide structure and function.

Helicobacter pylori is a widespread pathogen responsible for chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and an elevated risk of gastric cancer. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), localized exclusively in the outer leaflet of the outer membrane, is essential for maintaining bacterial integrity. Recent advances have deepened our understanding of H. pylori LPS structure, particularly lipid A modifications and the redefinition of the core oligosaccharide and O-antigen regions. The complete set of enzymes involved in LPS biosynthesis has been identified in the reference strain G27, and comparative genomics has revea…

Helicobacter Pylori and Gastric Cancer: An Update in the Literature.

Of the chronic bacterial infections that affect humans, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is one of the most common. It inhabits the stomachs of half of the adult human population. In Puerto Rico, a US territory, it has an overall prevalence of 33%, similar to the prevalence reported in the population of the US as a whole. Helicobacter pylori infection is responsible for mucosal inflammation that may lead to chronic gastritis, most peptic ulcers, gastric adenocarcinoma, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. The International Agency for Research on Cancer identified H. pylori …

Macrophage biology in the pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Infection with H. pylori induces chronic gastric inflammation, progressing to peptic ulcer and stomach adenocarcinoma. Macrophages function as innate immune cells and play a vital role in host immune defense against bacterial infection. However, the distinctive mechanism by which H. pylori evades phagocytosis allows it to colonize the stomach and further aggravate gastric preneoplastic pathology. H. pylori exacerbates gastric inflammation by promoting oxidative stress, resisting macrophage phagocytosis, and inducing M1 macrophage polarization. M2 macrophages facilitate the proliferation, invas

Advances in Diagnostic Modalities for Helicobacter pylori Infection.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a widespread global health issue with a varying prevalence influenced by geography, socioeconomic status, and demographics. In the U.S., the prevalence is lower, though certain groups, such as older adults and immigrants from high-prevalence regions, show higher rates. The decrease in infection rates in developed countries is due to improved sanitation, antibiotics, and healthcare, whereas developing countries continue to experience high rates due to poor living conditions. H. pylori infection can be asymptomatic or cause symptoms like dyspepsia, ab…

Application of furazolidone in Helicobacter pylori infection eradication.

Increasing antibiotic resistance is the primary reason for treatment failure of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. To enhance the eradication rate, minimize the development of secondary resistance, and alleviate the socioeconomic burden, it is crucial to select H. pylori-sensitive antibiotics carefully. Furazolidone has been used for H. pylori eradication in developing countries for decades due to its affordability and low resistance rate. Numerous studies have demonstrated that furazolidone-containing regimens are more efficacious than those containing other antibiotics, as both first…

Helicobacter cinaedi Infection Presenting with Myalgia and Cellulitis.

BACKGROUND Helicobacter cinaedi is a rare bacterium, accounting for only 0.2% of the positive isolates in blood cultures. Previous reports note that patients with H. cinaedi infection often have underlying diseases. H. cinaedi infection is diagnosed by blood culture. However, because of the slow growth of this bacterium in blood culture, the diagnosis can be missed. CASE REPORT A 78-year-old man gradually developed erythema and pain in his left arm, then left shoulder and both lower legs. The patient presented to our hospital on day 17. He was afebrile, but the examination was remarkable for t…
